Numbers Formula Errors and Warnings
Start with the actual diagnostic message, then repair a circular total or incorrectly quoted text.
Start by opening the indicator in the affected cell. Apple’s shared formula help distinguishes a blue warning triangle from a red formula-error triangle; its message provides the next diagnostic clue. Do not search only for an Excel hash-code equivalent. Apple’s error guidance.
Choose the repair that matches the formula:
- A total includes its own result: remove the circular dependency and check the complete intended input range.
- Text labels or embedded quotes break the formula: distinguish literal strings from references and test the output text.
Use a copy for experiments. Write down the original formula, the message and a small expected result before editing. A number appearing after the edit is not sufficient verification: change one controlled input and check that the answer updates appropriately.
These focused diagnoses complement the function reference and tutorials; they are not an exhaustive catalogue of every warning. Checked October 21, 2026 against shared Apple documentation. No native execution or screenshots are claimed, and platform-specific editing controls may differ.
