CONCAT Function in Apple Numbers: Syntax, Examples and Troubleshooting
Join text and cell ranges in Numbers using modern CONCAT rather than legacy CONCATENATE.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Apple Numbers. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer
CONCAT combines text pieces and even entire Numbers cell ranges without adding delimiters. For A2="Widget", B2="Blue", =CONCAT(A2," - ",B2) produces the expected text Widget - Blue. Apple describes CONCAT as the replacement for the older CONCATENATE function, which remains available for compatibility.
When to use CONCAT
Combine text or the contents of one or more cell ranges without automatically inserting a separator. First check whether the input needs to be treated as text so that leading zeroes, spaces or punctuation are not silently changed during import. Start with the sample table below, verify its result, and only then adapt your formula to production records.
Official syntax and argument order
=CONCAT(string, string…)
| Argument | Requirement and meaning |
|---|---|
string |
Required value, cell reference or cell range. Apple permits any value. |
string… |
Optional additional values, cell references or ranges to append in order. |
The syntax and parameter order above are taken from Apple’s CONCAT reference (consulted 2026-10-11). Arguments shown as … are optional extra values, not punctuation to type literally. No first-supported Numbers app version was established by the official reference.
Reproducible dataset
Create a Numbers table called Products with one header row and these text values:
| Row | A — Product | B — Variant | C — Stock code |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Widget |
Blue |
W-01 |
| 3 | Cable |
Red |
C-07 |
| 4 | Adapter |
Black |
A-12 |
| 5 | Kit |
Green |
K-03 |
Worked example, step by step
- In a spare result cell in Products enter
=CONCAT(A2," - ",B2). - Expected result:
Widget - Blue. The added spaces and hyphen come from the literal argument" - "; CONCAT does not invent a delimiter. - Test
=CONCAT(A3," [",C3,"]")with row 3. Expected:Cable [C-07]. - Test
=CONCAT(A2:A4). Apple explicitly documents passing a range to CONCAT. Expected:WidgetCableAdapter. Nothing separates the three source values.
For individual cells, =A2&" - "&B2 is a documented alternative and yields the same expected label. The & operator is not a range-concatenation substitute.
Advanced application
Build a batch summary from multiple ranges
With the Products table above, use
=CONCAT(A2:A4," / ",B2:B4)
The expected result is WidgetCableAdapter / BlueRedBlack: first the three product names, then the literal separator, then the three variants. This illustrates why CONCAT is good for joining raw ranges but less readable for list summaries. For a separator between each value, use TEXTJOIN(" / ",TRUE,A2:A4) instead (expected Widget / Cable / Adapter). Do not insert a comma argument expecting CONCAT to repeat it between every range member.
Typical errors, edge cases and troubleshooting
- Missing spaces or separators:
CONCAT(A2,B2)returnsWidgetBlue, notWidget Blue. Supply a literal separator or use TEXTJOIN. - Joining an entire range with
&: Apple’s Functions Help specifies the&operator combines individual values only, while CONCAT accepts ranges. Use CONCAT when range input is intended. - Unexpected header text: select only the data cells such as
A2:A4, not the header inA1. - Unexpected order: CONCAT follows the arguments and referenced cells; test a small range before building a long output.
- Numbers vs legacy functions: CONCATENATE remains available, but Apple’s guide marks CONCAT as its replacement. Do not assume CONCATENATE supports the same range inputs.
- Source types: formatting may affect values converted to text; verify currency, date and imported numeric presentation using known rows instead of assuming a particular rendering.
Excel, Google Sheets and other spreadsheet alternatives
Excel and Google Sheets also use functions called CONCAT, CONCATENATE and TEXTJOIN, but versions, range handling and text conversion rules can differ. Apple’s Numbers documentation expressly supports passing ranges to CONCAT and names it as the replacement for CONCATENATE. The Numbers & operator works with individual values but not full ranges, according to Apple. TEXTJOIN is the clearer Numbers alternative when a separator must appear between each item.
Numbers version, platform and regional considerations
This page follows Apple’s English Formulas and Functions Help 15.4 documentation, checked 2026-10-11. That is a documentation version, not proof of the first Numbers release that supported this function. Apple describes its Functions Browser for Numbers on Mac, iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com; the cited function reference does not specify a separate minimum installed version for this function or certify that all device editions behave identically. Mac, iPhone, iPad and web execution were not tested here.
- In the example table, a formula placed in the same table can use
A2,B2orA2:A6. For another Numbers table, the explicit form can beProducts::A2orSheet 2::Products::A2where disambiguation is needed. Use the built-in reference picker to avoid errors. - Apple’s English documentation separates arguments with commas. With a comma decimal separator configuration, Apple instructs you to use semicolons as function argument separators when typing by hand, such as
=CONCAT(A2;" - ";B2). This does not alter punctuation inside quoted text. - The examples are illustrative content, not screenshots and not proof of live application execution.
