BINOMDIST Function (Calligra Sheets)

Statistical Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Use BINOMDIST in Calligra Sheets for binomial mass or cumulative probability. Check integer counts, flag conversion and reproducible engine examples.

Verification status: 25 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Exact outputs, mathematical references and source limitations are documented separately. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =BINOMDIST(3;10;.5;0) gives approximately 0.1171875 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
  • Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
  • Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Statistical module. Compatibility names remain registered; no retirement is inferred. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.

What BINOMDIST returns

BINOMDIST returns a binomial point probability when cumulative is zero, or a lower-tail cumulative probability when it is nonzero after integer conversion. Use whole-number trial and success counts; fractional inputs are not consistently transformed into an ordinary binomial model. Function-specific official reference.

Syntax and arguments

=BINOMDIST(successes;trials;probability;cumulative)

All four arguments are required. successes must be an integer from 0 through trials; trials must be a nonnegative integer; probability must be from 0 to 1. Use 0 or 1 deliberately for cumulative. The implementation converts that flag to an integer, so 0.9 selects the point-probability branch. Registration and implementation.

Reproducible engine examples

The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet

For ten trials with success probability 0.5, exactly three successes has probability 0.1171875. At most three successes has probability 0.171875. The second value includes counts 0,1,2 and 3.

With five trials and p=0.2, exactly two successes has probability 0.2048 and at most two has probability 0.94208. The point model is COMBIN(n,k)*p^k*(1-p)^(n-k) for valid integer counts.

Advanced interpretation and checks

For one trial, the probabilities of zero and one success sum to 1. The saved check evaluates both terms directly. Its small residual from 1 reflects stored binary arithmetic.

Do not confuse a success probability with a percentage-formatted number: enter 0.2 for 20%. A cumulative result includes its cutoff; an interval from integer a through b uses CDF(b)−CDF(a−1). Check the lower bound separately when a=0 rather than calling the function with −1, which this release rejects.

The executed advanced check was:

=BINOMDIST(1;1;.3;0)+BINOMDIST(0;1;.3;0)

Its engine result was 1.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

The wrapper guards negative counts, successes>trials and probability outside [0,1]. It does not enforce integer counts. The loop truncates successes, but a fractional trials value is retained in powers and recurrence factors: BINOMDIST(2;5.9;0.5;0) therefore is not the probability from either a five- or six-trial model.

Nonnumeric success text was converted to zero in the tested engine, producing a plausible result. Validate numeric types and whole-number counts before calculation. All invalid-domain outputs and conversions are exact 25.04.2 observations; the newer release was source-checked only.

Official evidence and precision scope

The statistical and math modules and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.
