EFFECT and EFFECTIVE in Calligra Sheets

Financial Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Convert nominal rates with Calligra EFFECT or EFFECTIVE. Follow compounding examples and check fractional frequencies, zero rates, text and invalid powers.

Verification status: 19 EFFECT expressions and 19 EFFECTIVE expressions were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 engine library. Exact results and source limitations are documented separately. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =EFFECT(.12;1) gives approximately 0.12 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
  • Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
  • Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Financial module. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.

What EFFECT returns

EFFECT returns (1+nominalAnnualRate/periodsPerYear)^periodsPerYear-1. EFFECTIVE is another currently registered name for the same callback in Calligra. This is an active alias relationship, not evidence that either name is retired. Function-specific official reference.

Syntax and arguments

=EFFECT(nominalAnnualRate;periodsPerYear)

Both arguments are required. Enter the nominal annual rate as a decimal and an intended positive compounding frequency. The implementation retains a fractional frequency instead of truncating it. Registration and implementation.

Reproducible engine examples

The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet

A nominal annual rate of 12% compounded monthly gives 0.126825030132, or approximately 12.6825030132% effective annually. Semiannual compounding gives 0.1236, while quarterly compounding gives 0.12550881.

With one compounding period, the effective rate equals the nominal rate. Formatting the returned decimal as a percentage changes its presentation only; it does not perform an additional annualization.

Advanced interpretation and checks

For a fixed positive nominal rate, increasing a positive compounding frequency approaches EXP(rate)−1. The independent continuous limit at nominal rate 0.12 is approximately 0.127496851579, slightly above the monthly result.

The executed alias comparison below is exactly zero. Another way to interpret the result is to apply it to principal for one year: principal×(1+effective rate) agrees with the corresponding discrete COMPOUND calculation. Fees, changing rates and contractual rounding are outside that formula.

The executed advanced check was:

=EFFECT(.12;12)-EFFECTIVE(.12;12)

Its engine result was 0.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

Zero nominal rate with nonzero frequency returns zero. Zero frequency gives #DIV/0!, but negative frequency is not rejected by this wrapper. The valid fractional input 1.5 is evaluated as a real exponent; it is not treated as one period.

A negative base raised to a fractional exponent produced numeric NaN with no error flag in the tested engine. Nonnumeric nominal text became zero; nonnumeric frequency text reached the division-by-zero branch. TRUE converts to one. Validate the intended rate/frequency model and numeric types before comparing offers or schedules.

Formula Engine result
=EFFECT(.12;0) #DIV/0!
=EFFECT(.12;-2) 0.131733816206
=EFFECT(-.1;2) -0.0975
=EFFECT(-2;1.5) NaN
=EFFECT(".12";12) 0.126825030132
=EFFECT("abc";12) 0
=EFFECT(.12;"abc") #DIV/0!
=EFFECT(TRUE();2) 1.25
=EFFECT(.12) #VALUE!
=EFFECT(.12;2;0) #VALUE!

Official evidence and precision scope

The financial module and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.

EFFECTIVE alias and examples

=EFFECTIVE(nominalAnnualRate;periodsPerYear) accepts the same two required arguments as EFFECT. Both active registrations use the same calculation and argument-handling settings in 26.08.2 source. EFFECTIVE is already present in 2.4.0 source; that establishes historical presence, not its first release or retirement.

All eight reference inputs and ten boundary inputs shown for EFFECT were also executed with the EFFECTIVE spelling in the 25.04.2 engine, with identical typed results and error flags. The saved additional expression =COMPOUND(1000;.12;12;1)/1000-1-EFFECTIVE(.12;12) returned 0. These are engine expressions, without a worksheet-import claim.

At a nominal annual rate of 12% compounded monthly, principal 1000 grows to approximately 1126.825030131970 after one year. The second argument is the number of compounding periods per year, not the number of years. For several years, apply the yearly growth factor for the intended duration. NOMINAL reverses the rate conversion within its supported positive domain, but its zero-rate guard differs from EFFECT/EFFECTIVE.
