EPS Function (Calligra Sheets)
Read Calligra EPS’s fixed double-precision constant. See exact binary meaning and why it does not measure every engine build’s arithmetic spacing.
Verification status: 19 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Supported scalar outputs and aggregation inputs were independently checked. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked
Precision caution: EPS() returns the source constant DBL_EPSILON. It is not a measurement of the active calculation engine’s smallest distinguishable increment.
Quick answer: =EPS() gives approximately 2.22044604925E-16 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.
Availability and version history
- Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
- Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
- Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Math module. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
- Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.
What EPS returns
EPS returns the double-precision epsilon constant. In the tested build it is 2^−52, approximately 2.220446049250313×10^−16. This is the conventional spacing above 1 for binary64 arithmetic, not the smallest positive number and not a universal error bound. Function-specific official reference.
Syntax and arguments
=EPS()
EPS() takes no arguments. The parentheses are required in a formula. EPS(1) and EPS(1;2) are invalid calls. Registration and implementation.
Reproducible engine examples
The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet
The exact identity EPS()*2^52=1 is verified in the engine examples. Multiplying EPS by 2 or dividing it by 2 changes the value normally. The reciprocal is 2^52=4503599627370496.
Use a tolerance based on the scale and conditioning of the actual calculation, rather than applying EPS unchanged to every comparison. Two currency amounts, a tiny probability and a large integer do not have the same useful absolute tolerance merely because they share a spreadsheet.
Advanced interpretation and checks
The source explicitly returns DBL_EPSILON and comments that this should adapt to the number system. In the tested engine, 1+EPS()/4−1 is still positive. More narrowly, 1+EPS()/2048−1 gives 2^−63, while 1+EPS()/4096−1 gives zero. These observed expressions show why the fixed constant must not be presented as measured engine spacing.
The examples do not certify every operation’s rounding, accuracy or format. Cancellation and intermediate precision can affect an expression independently of a declared epsilon. The executed scale identity below returns zero.
The executed advanced check was:
=EPS()*2^52-1
Its engine result was 0.
Boundaries and troubleshooting
EPS is not an underflow threshold, a smallest representable positive number or a promise of a fixed number of correct decimal digits. It has no input whose type or magnitude can adjust that meaning.
All listed precision probes are recorded engine-library observations from this build. No other platform, newer execution, GUI result or saved-cell representation is inferred. The current source still returns the same fixed constant.

Official evidence and precision scope
The math module and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.
