GAMMA Function (Calligra Sheets)

Math Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Inspect Calligra Sheets GAMMA with separate native and mathematical results. See approximation residuals, half-integers and unsafe nonpositive-integer poles.

Verification status: 20 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Exact outputs, mathematical references and source limitations are documented separately. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked

Avoid gamma poles. In the tested 25.04.2 engine, GAMMA(0), GAMMA(−1) and GAMMA(−2) returned large finite numbers. The mathematical gamma function has poles there; those numbers are not valid finite gamma values.

Quick answer: =GAMMA(1) gives approximately 1.000000000105 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
  • Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
  • Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Math module. Compatibility names remain registered; no retirement is inferred. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.

What GAMMA returns

GAMMA evaluates an approximation to Euler’s gamma function. For positive integer n, the mathematical identity is Γ(n)=(n−1)!, and Γ(1/2)=√π. Native approximation residuals are retained in the table instead of silently replacing them with exact factorials. Function-specific official reference.

Syntax and arguments

=GAMMA(x)

Exactly one argument x is required. Positive x is a straightforward gamma domain. Negative nonintegers have finite real gamma values, but zero and negative integers are poles and must be excluded explicitly. Registration and implementation.

Reproducible engine examples

The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet

Mathematically, Γ(5)=24 and Γ(10)=362880. The tested engine returned approximately 23.999999999568 and 362879.999977588828. These are approximations, not exact factorial outputs.

Half-integer identities offer independent checks: Γ(1/2)=√π, Γ(3/2)=√π/2 and Γ(5/2)=3√π/4. Their corresponding native and high-precision values are shown separately.

Advanced interpretation and checks

The recurrence Γ(x+1)=xΓ(x) provides a local consistency check. The executed expression compares Γ(5) with 4Γ(4); it leaves a small nonzero residual. That records the implementation’s numerical behavior rather than a failure of the mathematical identity.

For large positive arguments, a log-gamma expression can avoid constructing a large gamma value when only its logarithm is needed. That is a different requested quantity and does not repair an invalid pole input.

The executed advanced check was:

=GAMMA(5)-4*GAMMA(4)

Its engine result was -4.622755511718E-10.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

The helper applies a coefficient approximation and a reflection formula using a floating-point sine. It lacks an explicit pole check. At x=0 the native result was about 2.565305078643×10^16, whereas no finite mathematical value exists. Do not treat large finite output as proof that the input is valid.

The engine also converted nonnumeric text to zero, and FALSE followed the same pole path. Numeric text and TRUE were converted as shown. Validate input type and exclude nonpositive integers before calling this function. These exact engine observations do not establish the display or behavior of another release.

Official evidence and precision scope

The statistical and math modules and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.
