GEOMEAN Function in Calligra Sheets: Geometric Average with Worked Examples

Statistical Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Learn Calligra Sheets GEOMEAN with exact syntax, reproducible numeric inputs, compound-growth calculations, implementation limits and spreadsheet compatibility cautions.

Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Calligra Sheets. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: GEOMEAN calculates the geometric mean: multiply the selected positive numbers, then take the root whose degree equals the number of values. For example, =GEOMEAN(4;8;16;32) has an independently calculated expected value of 11.313708498985, not the arithmetic average of 15. Use it when consecutive multipliers or proportional changes matter rather than additive differences. [K1, K3]

Validation (2026-10-13): This guide examines the pinned Calligra Sheets 26.08.2 source. KDE’s documentation and implementation were checked, and expected numeric results were calculated independently. These are not native Calligra execution results. Application-visible errors, interpretation of unusual inputs, and installed-package differences still need testing. [K2, K3, K4]

Exact syntax, parameters, and defaults

=GEOMEAN(value1; [value2]; ...)
=GEOMEAN(A2:A5)
  • value1 (required): a number, cell reference or range supplying numeric observations. KDE’s help labels the arguments as floating-point values; its release registration accepts array/range input. [K1, K2]
  • value2 and further inputs (optional): additional numeric values, references, or ranges. In the 26.08.2 registration setParamCount(1, -1) means at least one function argument and no fixed maximum encoded in this registration; this is not proof of unlimited practical workbook capacity. [K2]
  • Argument order: the ordering of independent numeric observations does not change the mathematical geometric mean. This is not the same as saying every input type is interchangeable. [I1]
  • Return: a number when the calculation is defined and the inputs are accepted. No optional mode, format or default-value argument exists in the examined registration. [K1, K2]
  • Locale: examples use KDE’s English documentation style: semicolon between arguments and period as decimal point. Localized installation settings can require different input syntax. A colon denotes a contiguous range; =GEOMEAN(A2:A5) needs no semicolon. [K1]

The mathematical calculation for positive numbers x1...xn is (x1 × ... × xn)^(1/n). The examined function calls Calligra’s count, product, and pow calculation helpers; if the numeric count is zero it returns the internal division-by-zero error. The wrapper does not explicitly reject nonpositive inputs, so do not assume it reproduces Microsoft Excel’s separate #NUM! rule without native tests. [K3, M1]

Reproduce the complete example in a new worksheet

  1. Open Calligra Sheets and create a blank sheet. Confirm that its function autocomplete contains GEOMEAN; a catalogue entry alone is not proof that the installed package executes it. [K1, K2]
  2. Type these labels and numeric inputs exactly; leave the formula cells outside the input ranges.
  3. Enter the table’s formulas in column E, one row at a time. Make sure the leading = is present; retain ; for the English example locale.
  4. Compare the resulting values with the expected column. Display at least six decimal places when checking fractional values.
Cell Value Cell Value
A1 Measurement B1 Period multiplier
A2 4 B2 1.10
A3 8 B3 0.95
A4 16 B4 1.20
A5 32 B5 (leave empty)
Enter in Formula Expected result, independently calculated Why it matters
E2 =GEOMEAN(A2:A5) 11.313708498985 A range counts four measurements.
E3 =GEOMEAN(4;8;16;32) 11.313708498985 Explicit numbers should match the range calculation.
E4 =GEOMEAN(4;16) 8 Square root of 64.
E5 =GEOMEAN(9) 9 A single positive value is its own geometric mean.
E6 =GEOMEAN(21;33;54;23) 30.458864410042 Cross-check against KDE’s rounded handbook example, 30.45886.
E7 =AVERAGE(A2:A5) 15 Arithmetic mean is larger for these unequal positive inputs.
E8 =GEOMEAN(B2:B4) 1.078365153391 Typical per-period multiplicative factor.
E9 =GEOMEAN(B2:B4)-1 0.078365153391 Compound-equivalent growth: format as 7.8365%.
E10 =GEOMEAN(1;100) 10 Contrasts with the arithmetic mean, 50.5.

Arithmetic audit: 4×8×16×32 = 16,384, and 16,384^(1/4) = 11.313708498985. For the growth rows, the total multiplier is 1.10×0.95×1.20 = 1.254, so the equivalent factor is 1.254^(1/3) = 1.078365153391. [I1]

An independent helper-column check

Because large products can become unwieldy, you can also check a positive-only dataset through logarithms without relying on array-entry conventions:

  1. Place =LN(A2) in C2 and copy C2 down through C5.
  2. In E11, enter =EXP(AVERAGE(C2:C5)).
  3. The independently calculated expected value is 11.313708498985, matching E2 within ordinary floating-point rounding. This identity holds only for strictly positive inputs. [I1]

This check uses LN, AVERAGE and EXP, whose canonical functions are separately registered in Calligra 26.08.2; no special array evaluation was assumed. See their official KDE entries, AVERAGE and EXP. [K1, K2]

Advanced use: average compounded growth, not average dollar change

Assume an index starts at 100, gains 10%, loses 5%, and gains 20% over three equal-length periods. In B2:B4, enter 1.10, 0.95, 1.20. The final index is 100×1.10×0.95×1.20 = 125.4. The simple arithmetic average of the stated percentage changes is 8.3333%, but the constant rate producing the same final value is GEOMEAN(B2:B4)-1 = 7.8365%. That is why geometric means are useful for compounded multiplicative returns. Do not apply this to periods of unequal lengths without normalizing time. [I1, M1]

Practical boundary: A value such as -5% is entered as a multiplier 0.95, not as -0.05. If a period represents a complete 100% loss, the factor becomes zero and the standard positive-factor growth-rate interpretation needs special consideration. Do not infer precise Calligra error behavior from Excel documentation. [I1, M1]

Troubleshooting, error handling, and limits

Symptom or question What to check Evidence and confidence
The formula is displayed literally Confirm the first character is =; check whether the cell is stored as text. General entry diagnostic, not native tested.
Unknown-function error Confirm the installed product is Calligra Sheets and includes the statistical function module; the 26.08.2 source registers GEOMEAN. Source registration, not installed-runtime proof. [K2]
Separator or decimal error The English handbook uses ; for arguments and . for decimals. Use the locale/formula separator expected by your installed Sheets. Handbook syntax; locale-specific parser not tested. [K1]
All cells empty or no numeric observations The examined wrapper checks count == 0 and returns the internal errorDIV0; its rendered cell text remains unverified. Source-inferred; no native execution. [K3]
Zero or negative inputs Keep the worked positive dataset. The wrapper has no explicit positive-only check; multiplication/power helpers may still produce different results/errors from Excel. Source inference only; native test required. [K3, M1]
Huge or tiny values Directly multiplying many values may reach numeric-precision or overflow limits; the positive-only log-helper approach can reduce product magnitude. Numerical reasoning; installed precision limits not measured. [I1]
Blanks, booleans, text, stored-as-text numbers The count/product helpers, parser and conversion rules determine acceptance. Do not transfer Excel’s detailed text/blank behavior into Calligra without a native test. Calligra behavior unverified for these input types. [K3, M1]

Review tests still open: native Calligra 26.08.2 runs of GEOMEAN(0;4), GEOMEAN(-2;-8), an empty referenced range, text within a range, error values, cross-locale separators, and very large arrays. The written examples intentionally avoid pretending these cases were observed. [K3]

Compatibility and version notes

  • Calligra 26.08.2 (KDE release dated 2026-10-08): the statistical module registers GEOMEAN with at least one argument and array/range acceptance, and the companion XML and KDE handbook describe the same mathematical operation. Documentation may be older than the source release; check your package version. [K1, K2, K4]
  • Microsoft Excel: also offers GEOMEAN, but the Excel documentation uses comma-oriented examples, specifies a 1–255 argument range and expressly returns #NUM! for values ≤0. Those are Excel-specific rules, not proof of Calligra compatibility in edge cases. [M1]
  • Platforms: KDE’s download page describes Linux distribution packages and Flatpak; it says work on Windows availability is in progress. There was no native test on Linux, Windows, macOS, or any other operating system in this research. [K5]
  • Aliases: no distinct alias for GEOMEAN appears in the pinned 26.08.2 official registration inventory. Punctuation or translated display variants do not establish separately registered functions. [K2]
