NOMINAL Function (Calligra Sheets)

Financial Intermediate Calligra Sheets

Convert an effective annual rate to a nominal rate with Calligra NOMINAL. Verify monthly and fractional frequencies, inverse checks and strict positive-rate guards.

Verification status: 19 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Exact outputs, mathematical references and source limitations are documented separately. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =NOMINAL(.12;1) gives approximately 0.12 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
  • Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
  • Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Financial module. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.

What NOMINAL returns

NOMINAL calculates periodsPerYear×((1+effectiveAnnualRate)^(1/periodsPerYear)−1). It converts an effective annual rate into the nominal annual rate associated with a specified compounding frequency. Function-specific official reference.

Syntax and arguments

=NOMINAL(effectiveAnnualRate;periodsPerYear)

Both arguments are required. This implementation requires a positive effective rate and a positive frequency. A zero frequency has a distinct division-by-zero error; fractional positive frequency is not truncated. Registration and implementation.

Reproducible engine examples

The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee.

Practical worksheet

To obtain an effective annual rate of 12% with monthly compounding, NOMINAL returns approximately 0.113865515215, or 11.3865515215% nominal annually. Dividing that nominal rate by twelve gives the periodic rate used in the compounded model.

With one period per year, the nominal and effective rates are equal. With two periods, the 12% effective rate corresponds to approximately 0.116601048852 nominal. These conversions compare rate definitions under the specified compounding assumption; they do not include fees.

Advanced interpretation and checks

The executed composition NOMINAL(EFFECT(.12;12);12) recovers approximately 0.12. Both calls must use the same frequency. A different frequency changes the periodic rate and breaks that particular inverse pairing.

The source allows a positive fractional frequency such as 1.5 and evaluates a real exponent. That is mathematically defined, but an ordinary contract schedule normally requires a clear integer number of compounding events per year. Supply the intended frequency explicitly rather than relying on truncation behavior from another product.

The executed advanced check was:

=NOMINAL(EFFECT(.12;12);12)

Its engine result was 0.12.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

Zero frequency gives #DIV/0!; negative frequency gives #VALUE!. Zero or negative effective rate also gives #VALUE!. This zero-rate guard differs from EFFECT/EFFECTIVE, which accept a zero nominal rate.

Numeric text is parsed in the tested arguments. Nonnumeric effective-rate text converts to zero and is rejected; nonnumeric frequency text reaches the zero-divisor guard. TRUE converts to one. Missing or extra arguments give #VALUE!. Positive-domain inverse checks do not establish matching behavior at every boundary.

Formula Engine result
=NOMINAL(.12;0) #DIV/0!
=NOMINAL(.12;-2) #VALUE!
=NOMINAL(0;12) #VALUE!
=NOMINAL(-.1;12) #VALUE!
=NOMINAL(".12";12) 0.113865515215
=NOMINAL("abc";12) #VALUE!
=NOMINAL(.12;"abc") #DIV/0!
=NOMINAL(TRUE();2) 0.828427124746
=NOMINAL(.12) #VALUE!
=NOMINAL(.12;2;0) #VALUE!

Official evidence and precision scope

The financial module and value-calculation helpers are byte-identical between the inspected 25.04.2 and 26.08.2 sources. That comparison supports the source discussion but does not establish later-version execution, GUI-cell behavior or other locales.
