STDEVA Function (Calligra Sheets)
Find sample standard deviation with Calligra Sheets STDEVA. Check text conversion, Boolean values, array examples and singleton errors in the engine.
Verification status: 22 selected formulas were executed through the Calligra Sheets 25.04.2 calculation engine library. Explicit scalar and inline-array identities and typed outputs were independently checked. Version 26.08.2 was source-checked only; no GUI-cell or import claim. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =STDEVA(1;2;3) gives approximately 1 in the tested Calligra calculation engine.
Availability and version history
- Introduced: First release not established; the name is present in Calligra 2.4.0 source.
- Supported in: Calligra Sheets 26.08.2, with no retirement established.
- Scope: Desktop Sheets with the Statistical module. Examples use English semicolon-separated formulas.
- Checked: October 14, 2026. Selected formulas ran through the official 25.04.2 engine library. Source and independent mathematics were checked. This is engine evidence, with no GUI-cell or import verification; 26.08.2 was source-checked only.
What STDEVA returns
STDEVA returns the square root of the full-value sample variance, with denominator n−1. Its included values can contain text and booleans: numeric text is parsed, nonnumeric text becomes zero, and TRUE/FALSE become 1/0 in the tested English context. Function-specific official reference.
Syntax and arguments
=STDEVA(value1[;value2;...])
Supply one or more values, arrays or ranges, with at least two included observations for a defined sample standard deviation. The examples use scalar lists and inline arrays. Brackets indicate optional arguments and are not entered in the formula. Registration and implementation.
Reproducible engine examples
The engine and mathematical columns are separate. Results are rounded to twelve decimal places, or thirteen significant digits in scientific notation for very small or large values. This is a display choice, not an accuracy guarantee. Inline arrays in braces are formula values, not a workbook-import test. Their semicolons separate columns and vertical bars separate rows. Strings remain explicitly quoted, and booleans use TRUE()/FALSE().

Practical worksheet
For 1,2,3, the mean is 2 and squared deviations sum to 2. Dividing by n−1=2 and taking the square root gives 1. The result has the same unit as the original numeric measurements.
=STDEVA(1;2;"9") uses 1,2,9, giving sqrt(19)≈4.358898943541. Replacing that text with “abc” changes the third value to zero and gives 1. A text field should not be treated as an actual measurement merely because the function can convert it.
Advanced interpretation and checks
Sample and population denominators differ. For the same converted list with n>1, STDEVA equals STDEVPA×sqrt(n/(n−1)). For 1,2,3 the population value is sqrt(2/3), while the sample value is 1.
Multiplying the list by 2 doubles its standard deviation. The native ratio STDEVA(2;4;6)/STDEVA(1;2;3) is 2. Adding the same constant to every numeric value leaves standard deviation unchanged. Rounding each input before calculation can change the spread; cell display formatting alone does not.
The executed advanced check was:
=STDEVA(2;4;6)/STDEVA(1;2;3)
Its engine result was 2.
Boundaries and troubleshooting
One included observation yields #DIV/0!; an explicit empty string alone also counts as a singleton and gives that error. Two or more identical values have standard deviation zero. A zero-argument call gives #VALUE!, and existing errors propagate. Genuine empty cells are skipped by source, but they were not exercised as cell-backed inputs here.
