Your First Expense Tracker in Calligra Sheets

Calligra Sheets is a spreadsheet application in KDE’s Calligra suite. This example builds a small expense tracker that recalculates as you edit the amounts. It focuses on concepts that are stable across spreadsheet versions rather than undocumented shortcuts.

Prepare a sample worksheet

Create a new blank worksheet and enter these values:

Then type these formulas, each beginning with an equals sign:

B6: =SUM(B2:B5)
C6: =SUM(C2:C5)
D6: =C6-B6

Expected totals: budget 750, actual 750, difference 0. Change C3 to 185 and the actual total should increase to 770, with difference 20.

Make it useful

1. Label row 6 Total and bold the header row.
2. Format numeric amounts consistently as currency using the cell formatting controls, if needed.
3. Save in the application’s native or ODF spreadsheet format and reopen the file to confirm the totals are preserved.
4. Keep an independent backup before experimenting with import/export formats.

The official Calligra handbook describes starting from a blank worksheet, formulas beginning with =, and automatic recalculation. Its detailed screenshots are older than the current Qt6-based releases; labels and panel positions may have changed.

Troubleshooting

• If =SUM(...) is displayed literally, check whether the cell was formatted as text before you entered it.
• If a sum excludes an amount, confirm the cell is numeric rather than an imported string.
• If a large number shows incompletely, increase the column width or adjust its number format.
