PPMT in Collabora Office: Track Principal Repaid in Each Period

Financial Intermediate Collabora Office Calc

Calculate Collabora principal components, reconcile them with interest and payment amounts, and verify that a complete schedule repays the intended balance.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =PPMT(10%;1;3;1000;0;0) has independently expected result approximately −302.114803625. It is the principal part of the first payment in a three-period amortization model, not the full payment.

Syntax and arguments

=PPMT(Rate; Period; NPer; PV [; FV [; Type]])

Rate is the per-period interest rate. Period identifies the payment being inspected, NPer the total number of periods and PV the opening present value. Optional FV is the terminal value. Type zero means end-of-period payments; Type one means beginning-of-period payments. The Collabora reference explicitly describes the first and last periods as one and NPer.

Use the same viewpoint for every cash flow. Here a positive 1000 is received initially, while payments of interest and principal are negative outflows. PPMT isolates the amount that changes principal under the specified constant-rate, constant-payment model.

Example 1: reconstruct the first principal component

Enter 10%, 3 and 1000 in B2:B4. Calculate =PMT(B2;B3;B4;0;0) in B6, expected approximately −402.114803625.

The first interest component from =IPMT(B2;1;B3;B4;0;0) has independent target −100. Subtracting that from the negative total payment gives −302.114803625, matching the PPMT target.

Do not subtract the positive interest magnitude from an already negative payment. That would mix signs and overstate principal. Either use signed amounts throughout or deliberately convert all outflows to positive magnitudes for a report.

Example 2: verify the complete principal schedule

Enter 1, 2, 3 in A10:A12. In B10 use =PPMT($B$2;A10;$B$3;$B$4;0;0) and fill down. Independently expected magnitudes are approximately 302.114803625, 332.326283988, and 365.558912387; the function results are negative from this viewpoint.

Their sum is 1000 in magnitude. The principal share increases while the interest share decreases, even though the total payment stays constant.

A positive book-balance check is initial principal plus cumulative signed PPMT results. For example, with this layout, =$B$4+SUM($B$10:B10) in C10 and filled down gives expected closing balances approximately 697.885196375, 365.558912387, then zero.

Advanced application: separate repayment from cost

Add matching IPMT results beside PPMT and sum the two signed components by row. Each row should reproduce PMT. Across all periods, principal magnitudes sum to 1000 and interest magnitudes sum to approximately 206.344410876.

The principal component is repayment of the modeled balance. It is not the interest cost. A report that calls the full payment “interest expense” confuses these components. Nor does this arithmetic establish the accounting treatment of any real contract.

Advanced application: a remaining balance changes the check

With PV=1000 and FV=−200 after three end-of-period payments, the recurring payment magnitude falls to approximately 341.691842900. The full schedule’s principal repayment should total 800, leaving 200 outstanding under the same sign convention.

Do not demand that a nonzero-terminal-value schedule’s PPMT sum equal the whole original principal. Compare the sum with the intended reduction in principal, and keep the remaining balance visible.

Timing, boundaries and troubleshooting

Type=1 requires a consistent beginning-payment schedule. In that independent model, the first payment occurs immediately and initially consists entirely of principal; its first interest component is zero. That boundary was not executed in native Collabora here.

For zero rate and four periods, =PPMT(0;1;4;1000;0;0) has mathematical target −250, equal to the full constant payment. The same applies to each period of that ordinary zero-interest schedule.

Validate whole-number Period within one through NPer. Exact native error displays for out-of-range, fractional or otherwise invalid inputs are not established by this guide. Align all period units, preserve full precision, and inspect copied references if the principal sum fails to reconcile.

Availability and verification

Collabora Office 26.04 desktop help documents PPMT. The official snapshot was retrieved on 2026-10-13 and hash-verified for this guide on October 15, 2026. Online/mobile support is not inferred from this desktop documentation.

First introduced release and last functioning version are unknown. No native Collabora execution was performed. Expected outputs are independent arithmetic or equation controls, not captured application results. Exact native error behavior, additional versions and extreme numerical cases remain unverified.
