RAND in Collabora Office: Generate and Freeze Random Decimal Values
Understand Collabora RAND range and recalculation, transform draws, and preserve stable simulation inputs for reproducible analysis.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =RAND() generates a pseudorandom decimal on the intended interval 0 ≤ value < 1. It takes no arguments and is volatile: a recalculation can replace the value. There is no single expected draw to compare with a screenshot or answer key.
Syntax and range
=RAND()
There are no lower-bound, upper-bound, or seed arguments. Collabora Help describes numbers between 0 and 1; the pinned evaluator uses a uniform real distribution configured with endpoints 0.0 and 1.0, whose intended interval includes zero and excludes one.
Displayed rounding can still show 1.000 when the underlying value is smaller than one. Increase displayed decimal places before diagnosing a boundary issue. This source review does not establish the behavior of every compiler/runtime at floating-point endpoints.
RAND is a simulation and sampling building block. It is not a source of cryptographic keys, authentication secrets, or security-sensitive tokens. No guarantee about security, exact sequence, or cross-version repeatability is made here.
Worked example: create a column of draws
- Enter a heading such as Draw in A1.
- Enter
=RAND()in A2. - Fill the formula down through A11.
- Format the cells as numbers with enough decimal places to see differences.
Each formula is expected to produce a value in the interval described above. The ten cells are ten draws, not a promised fixed sequence. No particular draw is required for this example. The workflow has not been run in native Collabora during this review.
For a basic range check, enter =AND(A2>=0;A2<1) in B2 and fill down. It checks the current referenced value. It does not prove uniformity, independence, or a reliable generator. With volatile data, a later recalculation may change the inputs you are inspecting.
Recalculation and keeping a stable sample
The Help states RAND recalculates whenever recalculation occurs and identifies F9 as a manual recalculation command. Do not assume a workbook edit leaves previous draws unchanged, and do not assume the same workbook will reproduce its sequence after reopening.
For a permanent sample, copy the draw cells and use Edit → Paste Special with Numbers selected and Formulas and Paste All cleared. Paste into a separate destination if you want to retain the original formulas. Confirm the destination contains numbers rather than RAND formulas; saving a workbook containing formulas is not the same as freezing its draws.
The Help also names Sheet → Fill Cells → Fill Random Numbers as a way to create stored random values, and points to RAND.NV for a nonvolatile function. Nonvolatile does not mean an immutable stored value under every operation, so use value pasting when you need a fixed record. Menu labels can vary by version and platform.
Advanced application: transform one draw
To model a continuous uniform value from 20 up to 50, put =RAND() in A2 and =20+(50-20)*A2 in B2. The mathematical interval is [20,50). Using the same stored cell makes the dependence explicit.
If A2 were 0, the transformation would be 20. If it were 0.5, it would be 35. These are hypothetical arithmetic checks, not observed random outputs. Neither endpoint check establishes that any particular value will be drawn.
For an integer from 1 through 6, =INT(6*A2)+1 transforms the unit-interval draw into six equal-width bins under the ideal uniform model. This is an illustrative construction, not a guarantee against every floating-point endpoint anomaly. A dedicated random-integer function may better express that intent.
Advanced application: a simulated yes/no event
Put a probability such as 30% in D2. With the draw in A2, =IF(A2<$D$2;"Yes";"No") models an event with that probability. Validate D2 between 0 and 1. Keep the draw in one cell rather than using multiple RAND calls if different outcomes should depend on the same trial.
In ten trials, three Yes values are not guaranteed. Even in large samples, observed proportions fluctuate. Freeze inputs before comparing alternative models so changing random draws do not obscure the effect of a changed assumption.
Errors, limits, and troubleshooting
Passing parameters is unsupported. A number that changes unexpectedly usually reflects volatility rather than an incorrect range formula. A column that repeats one constant may have been filled from a pasted value rather than a formula. A displayed 1 may be rounding.
RAND provides no seed parameter, and this review makes no claim about deterministic replay, generator identity across versions, or concurrency details. To audit a simulation, preserve the actual input values, formulas, model parameters, and application version. RANDBETWEEN is related but has its own argument and range contract.
Availability and verification
Reviewed on 19 October 2026 against saved Collabora Office 26.04 Help retrieved on 17 October 2026 and the Collabora co-26.04 source snapshot at commit c1013fad0d38683630b48c01b6d5208b8d81181e. The repository is hosted under LibreOffice/core, but the evidence used here is the pinned Collabora branch snapshot, not a claim about another spreadsheet product. The Help URL marked latest can change. Fresh Help retrieval was unavailable during this review, so Help statements were checked against the saved first-party pages; the pinned implementation files were freshly retrieved and verified.
Examples are independently calculated expectations, not recorded Collabora output. Native Collabora and its GUI were unavailable for this review; no screenshots or application runs are claimed. The first release introducing this function and the last working binary version have not been established. Online, mobile, older releases, localized function names, and round-trip compatibility need separate verification. Formulas use English names and semicolon separators; use the separators configured in your installation.
