YIELDDISC in Collabora Office: Calculate a Discount Security’s Annual Yield

Financial Intermediate Collabora Office Calc

Use Collabora YIELDDISC with per-100 price and redemption, reproduce the documented 5.2823% result, and distinguish yield from redemption-based discount.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =YIELDDISC(DATE(1999;2;15);DATE(1999;3;1);99.795;100;2) has documented result approximately 5.2823%. It calculates annual yield for a non-interest-bearing security from its price and redemption amount.

Syntax and conventions

=YIELDDISC(Settlement; Maturity; Price; Redemption [; Basis])

Settlement is the purchase date and Maturity the expiry date. Price and Redemption are both quoted per 100 currency units of par. These four arguments are required; Basis is optional and defaults to zero.

Basis Documented convention
0 or omitted US NASD, twelve 30-day months
1 Actual days in months and actual days in year
2 Actual days in months, 360-day year
3 Actual days in months, 365-day year
4 European method, twelve 30-day months

Use numeric per-100 prices, not percentage-formatted substitutes. The result is a decimal rate and may be formatted as a percentage. DATE gives explicit date inputs without relying on text conversion.

Example: reproduce the source result

Put dates 1999-02-15 and 1999-03-01 in A2:B2, Price 99.795 in C2, Redemption 100 in D2, and Basis 2 in E2. In F2 enter =YIELDDISC(A2;B2;C2;D2;E2).

The interval is 14 actual days. The independent actual/360 calculation is:

=(D2-C2)/C2*360/(B2-A2)

It yields approximately 0.052822571987, or 5.2822571987%, consistent with the vendor’s rounded 5.2823%. The holding-period gain 0.205 is divided by the purchase price 99.795.

Example: a half-year return from price 98

For settlement 2026-01-15, maturity 2026-07-15, Price 98, Redemption 100, and Basis 0, the regular 30/360 fraction is 0.5.

=YIELDDISC(DATE(2026;1;15);DATE(2026;7;15);98;100;0)

The independent expected rate is (100−98)/98/0.5, approximately 4.081632653%. A price below redemption gives a positive gain in this ordinary example; the rate’s meaning still depends on the time convention.

Advanced comparison: the same gain has different rate definitions

For the half-year example, a redemption-based annual discount is (100−98)/100/0.5, exactly 4%. The YIELDDISC-style investment-based yield is approximately 4.081632653% because 98, not 100, is the denominator.

An effective compounded annual growth model for two identical half-years would instead be (100/98)^2−1, approximately 4.123281966%. That assumes a repeated growth factor and is a different model from simple annualization.

Label the rate with its convention. “Annual yield” without a definition can conceal these distinctions even when every individual calculation is arithmetically correct.

Advanced application: check the price from a simple yield

Rearranging the independent simple-yield equation gives:

=Redemption/(1+yield*year_fraction)

Using Redemption 100, yield 0.0408163265306122, and year fraction 0.5 reconstructs approximately 98. In a worksheet, reference the unrounded result cells instead of copying a percentage rounded for display.

For the vendor control, retain the exact input Price 99.795. The separate PRICEDISC example’s value 99.79583 is based on a different discount input and rounding; substituting it here changes the rate. Printed examples should not be forced into an exact round-trip check when their inputs differ.

Errors and troubleshooting

Verify date order, numeric date values, positive price/redemption inputs, the chosen Basis, and consistent quote units. A zero elapsed time or zero price makes the independent model undefined; this is not a tested statement of the native error code.

The dedicated source does not enumerate every invalid-input error, text coercion, or February/month-end convention. ROUND can format an output but cannot resolve a wrong day-count basis or denominator.

The guide’s regular-date controls do not model fees, taxes, coupons, or actual market execution. They show how the documented function and independent arithmetic relate, without claiming cross-product identity or recommending a financial transaction.

Availability and verification

The exact function is documented in Collabora Office 26.04 desktop help, retrieved and reviewed on October 17, 2026. This establishes a documentation scope, not the first release that introduced the function or the last version in which it works; those versions and any retirement date remain unestablished. Collabora Online and mobile support are not inferred from desktop help, nor is behavior in another spreadsheet product.

The examples are documentation-based expectations with independent calculations. They have not been executed in Collabora Office. No application screenshot or native error/coercion certification is implied. Formulas use English function names and semicolon argument separators.
