Excel #SPILL!: Diagnose the Output Area Before Rewriting an Array
#SPILL! means Excel cannot place an expanding result in the required grid area. A formula can be arithmetically correct but have nowhere to put its answers. Microsoft’s SPILL reference distinguishes several causes; clearing random neighboring cells is not a universal repair.
Identify the obstruction without losing data
Inspect the intended output rectangle and the error detail. Existing entries and merged cells can block it. Prefer moving the test formula to a clearly empty area rather than deleting data you have not identified. If the formula is inside an Excel table, use the separate table-specific repair tutorial; an empty table column does not remove that restriction.
A controlled blocked-output exercise
This SEQUENCE exercise is scoped to documented desktop versions Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024 or Excel 2021. In a new scratch sheet, put Reserved note in D3 and enter this in D2:
=SEQUENCE(3,1,10,5)
The formula requests three rows beginning at D2. D3 is occupied, so the documented expected symptom is #SPILL!. Preserve the note. Instead, enter the same formula in G2, with G2:G4 empty and unmerged. The expected values are 10, 15, 20 in G2:G4. Microsoft SEQUENCE reference.
Compare the shape as well as the values: three rows, one column, first value 10, increment 5. A single value of 10 is not the same output as the three-row sequence. Adding implicit intersection merely to remove an error can change the intended result.
When the area appears clear
- Merged cells: move the formula to an unmerged test area before altering the report’s layout.
- Grid boundary or excessive size: reduce the requested range to the actual records rather than an entire column of results.
- Changing dimensions: a random expression controlling array size can fail to stabilize. Separate the chosen size from the random calculation and test a fixed size first.
Record which change fixes the symptom. This distinguishes an output-placement repair from a change to the calculation itself.
Keep the error visible until the result is complete
A blanket fallback cannot establish that every requested row arrived. Check the output dimensions and a known endpoint after repair, then check downstream formulas that consume the array. Do not mark an export complete because the top-left cell now contains a number.
Version and evidence limits
Checked October 21, 2026. Microsoft’s general SPILL page lists Excel Web App, but the cited SEQUENCE page’s edition list does not establish free-web availability; the worked exercise is therefore explicitly desktop-scoped. No paid edition was run, and no native screenshot or free-web parity is claimed. Values and output coordinates were independently checked. Use local argument separators when needed. For unrelated symptoms, start with Excel troubleshooting.
