INFO Function in Microsoft Excel: Syntax, Examples & Troubleshooting
Inspect Excel environment information with INFO. Understand conditional system and calculation outputs, worksheet counts, path disclosure and retired memory keywords.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: INFO(type_text) reports information about the Excel environment currently calculating the workbook. Its outputs are environment-dependent; a guide cannot promise your operating-system version, file path or open-sheet count without observing your session.
Syntax and keyword contract
=INFO(type_text)
The single required argument is a quoted text keyword:
| Keyword | Meaning |
|---|---|
"directory" |
Directory/folder associated with the documented startup “open all files in” setting |
"numfile" |
Number of worksheets across open workbooks |
"origin" |
Top-left visible cell reference, with a Lotus-compatibility prefix |
"osversion" |
Operating-system version text |
"recalc" |
Current calculation mode, documented as Automatic or Manual |
"release" |
Excel version text |
"system" |
Operating environment: mac for Macintosh, pcdos for Windows |
Despite its name, numfile is documented as a worksheet count, not simply the number of workbook files. Release and osversion describe different things. INFO is explicitly unavailable in Excel Web App according to the reference.
Worked example: build a small diagnostic block
In a supported desktop Excel session, enter these labels in A2:A4 and formulas in B2:B4:
| Label | Formula | Expected contract |
|---|---|---|
| Environment | =INFO("system") |
pcdos on Windows or mac on Macintosh |
| Calculation | =INFO("recalc") |
Automatic or Manual, according to current mode |
| Excel version | =INFO("release") |
Version text for the calculating Excel session |
There is no universal fixed release string. These are conditional expectations, not a report of a session accessed for this guide. Compare each output with the application’s own information and calculation settings rather than copying an example version number into a support request.
The legacy-looking string pcdos does not mean that the user is running DOS. It is the documented Windows environment identifier returned by this function.
Second example: understand worksheet count
Enter =INFO("numfile") in another cell. If the calculating session has exactly one open workbook containing exactly three worksheets and no other counted worksheets, the expected count is 3. If another workbook adds two worksheets to that same session, the corresponding conditional expected count is 5 after recalculation.
The result depends on the actual open session. Do not assert a count merely because one workbook window is visible, and do not treat a changed count as proof that a particular named file is open.
Advanced application: interpret origin without exposing a path
Microsoft documents origin as the top-left visible cell with a $A: prefix for Lotus 1-2-3 compatibility. If that visible cell is D9, its documented conditional output is $A:$D$9 in A1 reference style or $A:R9C4 in R1C1 style.
This describes scrolling position and reference style, not the selected cell or a permanent worksheet identifier. A report that needs a specific cell address should use an explicit reference-based calculation instead of interpreting origin as a stable location.
The directory keyword can expose local folder information. Include that output in a shared diagnostic document only when it is relevant and appropriate for its recipients. INFO is a worksheet function, not an anonymization mechanism; copying its results as values can preserve environment details even after the workbook moves elsewhere.
Retired keywords and troubleshooting
The older memavail, memused and totmem keywords are explicitly no longer supported and return #N/A in the current documented behavior. For example, =INFO("memavail") is expected to produce that documented error, not an available-memory number. The reference does not establish the exact last functioning release for these options.
A browser workbook cannot be assumed to support INFO because a desktop workbook does. For an unrecognized or unexpected result, check platform, keyword spelling and the actual session being calculated. The individual page does not publish an exhaustive list of errors for every invalid keyword, so no additional code is fabricated here.
Use a diagnostic block to explain the environment in which a calculation ran. It does not prove a model is correct, validate a license or identify every running process.
Compatibility and verification
Microsoft’s reference checked on October 17, 2026 lists: Excel for Microsoft 365 Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac Excel 2024 Excel 2024 for Mac Excel 2021 Excel 2021 for Mac Excel 2019 Excel 2016 Excel for iPad Excel for iPhone Excel for Android tablets Excel for Android phones. This current support list does not establish the first release. The introduction version and last functioning version have not been established from the reviewed documentation. No retirement is asserted.
The individual Microsoft reference explicitly says INFO is unavailable in Excel Web App. Its support list and historical keyword retirement are separate claims; no exact introduction or retirement release for the memory keywords is inferred.
Example verification: Expected numerical results are independently calculated; text and shape expectations follow the documented contract. These examples have not been tested in Microsoft Excel. No screenshot or native execution is claimed.
