DATE2HDATE Function (Gnumeric)
Convert a Gregorian spreadsheet date to romanized Hebrew-date text in Gnumeric, with explicit date inputs and calendar-boundary cautions.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
DATE2HDATE returns a text representation of the Hebrew-calendar date corresponding to a Gregorian date value. It is useful for labeling a worksheet date in another calendar, while retaining the original date serial for sorting and arithmetic. The output is text, not a new spreadsheet date serial.
Syntax and default
=DATE2HDATE([date])
The optional date argument is a Gregorian date interpreted through the workbook’s date convention. Omitting it uses the current date from the running environment. For reproducible documents, supply an explicit DATE expression or a stable referenced date rather than relying on today. No location, sunset time, or time-zone argument is available.
The source converts the input to Gregorian year/month/day, then obtains the Hebrew day, month name and year. The formatted day is one-based. This function uses a romanized month name; the separate Hebrew-script variant is a different worksheet name and is not assumed interchangeable here.
Reproducible calendar fixture
Use =DATE2HDATE(DATE(2024,10,3)). Independently, the Gregorian civil date October 3, 2024 corresponds before sunset to1 Tishrei 5785, confirmed by Hebcal’s date-conversion service. Gnumeric’s exact spelling of the romanized month is recorded in the native result below. Transliteration differences do not necessarily imply a different calendar date.
For a reusable table, put =DATE(2024,10,3) in A2, format A2 as a Gregorian date, and put =DATE2HDATE(A2) in B2. Keep A for chronological calculations and B for display. Sorting the formatted text alphabetically is not a reliable way to sort calendar dates.
The formula uses DATE rather than a string such as 03/10/2024, whose interpretation can vary by locale. If a numeric serial came from a workbook using another date convention, validate the Gregorian date first; the conversion cannot infer a mistaken serial origin.
Advanced use and calendar limits
A Hebrew calendar day traditionally begins at sunset, while this worksheet function accepts a civil date without location or sunset information. It cannot decide whether a timestamp after local sunset belongs to the next Hebrew day. For observance scheduling or any decision depending on sunset, use an appropriate calendar source and explicit local context rather than treating this date-only conversion as complete.
The omitted-argument form is convenient for a live label, but its result depends on the runtime date. Exported or cached workbook values may not update until recalculation. A dated report should capture its intended input date explicitly instead of changing meaning when reopened.
Errors, history and evidence
The function registration first applies numeric argument conversion, so malformed text can fail before reaching the date helper. Within the inspected date helper, failed conversion of a supplied numeric worksheet date to a Gregorian date returns #NUM!; rejection by the subsequent Hebrew conversion helper returns #VALUE!. These helper errors are not a universal promise for every malformed input. Only the ordinary valid-date fixture is native-tested here; broad historical ranges, malformed inputs and all workbook date systems are not certified.
NEWS documents DATE2HDATE as new in Gnumeric 1.10.8. Retained official source 1.12.62 was obtained October 13–14, 2026 and reviewed October 17. The independent Hebcal conversion was freshly retrieved October 17. Last functioning release is not established, and no screenshot or native 1.12.62 execution is implied.
Native verification
On October 17, 2026, Gnumeric ssconvert 1.12.57 returned exactly 1 Tishri 5785 for the explicit DATE fixture. The independent Hebcal spelling Tishrei denotes the same month.
