EFFECT Function (Gnumeric)
Convert a nominal yearly interest rate to its effective annual rate in Gnumeric, with quarterly and monthly compounding examples.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in Gnumeric. How formula examples are checked
Validation scope: Results are independently calculated expectations, not outputs observed in a running Gnumeric session.
Gnumeric support and notation
This page concerns Gnumeric (GNOME’s spreadsheet application), not the identically named feature in another spreadsheet. The official Gnumeric Finance reference documents the signature and behaviour, and the public function catalogue lists the function’s implementation as Complete with Basic upstream testing (both checked 2026-10-13). The Gnumeric 1.12.62 release announcement confirms the target release exists, but this manuscript does not establish that every supported operating-system package ships identical binaries or that our examples ran in that version. Consult your distribution’s Gnumeric package and function list. These are finance functions, not optional add-ins asserted to be available on every platform.
Formula syntax below uses the English function name, decimal point and comma-separated arguments shown by the English Gnumeric reference. Some installations use a localized decimal separator and/or argument delimiter; check the on-screen Function Selector and adapt syntax rather than pasting commas blindly. Put percentage values in cells as numbers formatted as percentages (for example, 6% = 0.06); do not type the number 6 when you mean six percent.
Purpose and when to use it
EFFECT converts an annual nominal interest rate, quoted with a stated number of compounding periods in the year, into an effective annual interest rate. The latter reflects interest added to principal during that same year. It is useful when comparing two savings accounts quoting the same nominal rate but different compounding frequency. It does not calculate the total account balance, a loan’s monthly payment or an investment return that includes variable rates or fees. The Gnumeric manual explicitly supplies the mathematical identity below. Official Gnumeric Finance reference, EFFECT, checked 2026-10-13.
Exact syntax, argument order and types
=EFFECT(rate,nper)
| Position | Argument | Expected input | Meaning and default |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | rate |
Numeric nominal annual rate, such as 6% or 0.06 |
Required; this is a yearly nominal rate, not the periodic rate. |
| 2 | nper |
Numeric number of compounding periods per year (normally a positive whole count, such as 1, 4, or 12) | Required; no documented default. |
The documented formula is (1 + rate/nper)^nper - 1. The result is a rate, not money: format it as Percentage for display. A nominal 6% compounded quarterly means rate=0.06, nper=4, and a periodic interest rate of 1.5%. Official manual.
Reproduce the calculation in a blank Gnumeric sheet
Enter the following values (use the exact cell positions):
| Cell | Label / entry | Value or formula | Expected displayed meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 / B2 | Annual nominal rate | 6% |
0.06 numerically |
| A3 / B3 | Compounds per year | 4 |
Quarterly |
| A4 / B4 | Effective annual rate | =EFFECT(B2,B3) |
6.1363550625% |
| A5 / B5 | Manual audit | =(1+B2/B3)^B3-1 |
6.1363550625% |
| A6 / B6 | Difference | =B4-B5 |
Approximately 0 |
Independent calculation: (1+0.06/4)^4−1 = 0.061363550625. You may see fewer digits when cell formatting limits display precision. The equality test verifies arithmetic; it is not a record of a Gnumeric execution.
Compare annual, quarterly and monthly compounding
Place 1, 4, 12 in cells D2:D4. In E2, enter =EFFECT($B$2,D2) and fill down to E4.
| D: compounds/year | Formula in E | Independently calculated effective annual rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | =EFFECT($B$2,D2) |
6.0000000000% |
| 4 | =EFFECT($B$2,D3) |
6.1363550625% |
| 12 | =EFFECT($B$2,D4) |
6.1677811865% |
With the same positive nominal rate, more frequent compounding slightly increases the effective annual rate in this conventional model. A finance advertisement might call the result an annual percentage yield; advertising conventions and fees may differ, so this calculation alone does not certify a regulated quoted APY or APR.
Advanced use: reconcile a quote and a future-value estimate
Use =NOMINAL(B4,B3) to turn the EFFECT output back into its nominal quote: the independent expected rate is 6.0000000000%. If you want the value of $10,000 invested for five years at the unchanging nominal 6% compounded quarterly, the independent formula is =10000*(1+$B$2/$B$3)^(5*$B$3), giving approximately $13,468.55. That amount assumes no contributions, withdrawals, taxes or fees. The comparable effective-annual expression =10000*(1+B4)^5 is mathematically equal apart from floating-point rounding. These examples are finance-math derivations, not claims of installed-function execution. Gnumeric manual, EFFECT and NOMINAL.
Mistakes, bounds and troubleshooting
-
Wrong rate period:
=EFFECT(6%/12,12)interprets 0.5% as the annual nominal rate and is wrong for a 6% annual quote. Supply6%inrate. -
Different fee structures:
EFFECTaccounts for compounding only, not banking service charges, tiered promotional yields, variable day counts or irregular deposits. Calculate those separately before comparing offers. -
Output looks like
0.06136: it is an unformatted rate; apply Percentage to show 6.136…%. Rounding the displayed rate early can obscure comparisons.
Source-verified input bounds (1.12.62): The implementation floors numeric nper to an integer and returns a NUM-kind error when that count is below 1 or when rate is zero or negative. These are source branches, not observed error displays. Use positive rates and positive whole compounding counts; arbitrary text coercion remains untested.
