What NORMINV does
NORMINV returns the normal-model value whose cumulative probability is p. The result has the same units as the mean and standard deviation. It is a cutoff or percentile, not a probability or a density. Official function reference.
The quantile is mean+stddev×Φ⁻¹(p), where Φ⁻¹ is the inverse standard-normal cumulative distribution. A larger cumulative probability produces a higher cutoff for fixed parameters.
Syntax and arguments
=NORMINV(p,mean,stddev)
| Argument | Meaning |
|---|---|
| p | Left-tail cumulative probability; use 0<p<1 for a finite cutoff. |
| mean | Distribution mean. |
| stddev | Strictly positive standard deviation. |
Every argument shown is required. Use numeric inputs or cell references. The examples follow English Gnumeric’s comma-separated notation and decimal points; localized separators can differ. Release-pinned argument help and evaluator.
Reproducible examples
Enter each formula in an unused worksheet cell. These are independently calculated mathematical reference values rounded to twelve decimal places. Keep full stored precision in later formulas rather than retyping a rounded display.

Worked worksheet applications
Build a percentile calculator
Enter probability 0.9 in A2, mean 10 in B2 and SD 2 in C2. In D2 enter =NORMINV(A2,B2,C2), expected 12.563103131089. The result is a measurement value. Do not format it as 90%; A2 contains the probability and D2 contains its cutoff.
Central 95% interval
For the same model, =NORMINV(0.025,10,2) and =NORMINV(0.975,10,2) give approximately 6.080072030920 and 13.919927969080. Each tail contains 2.5%. This is an interval for the assumed distribution, not a confidence interval for an estimated mean.
Release-specific errors and cautions
The wrapper rejects p outside [0,1] and stddev≤0 with #NUM!. At p=0 or p=1, the normal-quantile helper produces an unbounded value, and the shared numeric-result constructor maps nonfinite output to #NUM!. Use an interior probability for a finite answer. This endpoint conclusion follows the full source path, not a native test. Pinned evaluator. Quantile endpoints and boundary macro. Normal inverse helper. Nonfinite numeric result handling.
Advanced check and numerical interpretation
Check D2 with =NORMDIST(D2,B2,C2,TRUE()), which should recover approximately A2. Quantiles are increasingly sensitive near 0 and 1; reference the original probability cell and avoid replacing it with a rounded display. Use a positive SD and match the units of the mean and returned cutoff.
