Google Sheets Calculation Error Reference
Diagnose missing results, invalid references, zero divisors and input-type errors using Sheets-specific causes.
These references distinguish selected Google Sheets error causes before choosing a repair. They are not a complete list of every error or a certification of every client.
-
#N/A: missing lookup or empty selection helps decide whether the data, the question or only its presentation needs to change.
-
#REF!: range boundary or import connection separates a local reference problem from an access decision involving another spreadsheet.
-
Formula syntax: reconstruct an expression step by step checks nested arguments, quoted sheet references and both branches before diagnosing a calculated result.
Numeric and input-type problems
Use the function-specific controls already available below before changing a reporting rule. The same visible error can need different repairs depending on which function rejected its input.
- Division fails when the divisor is zero: DIVIDE: a deliberate zero-divisor policy distinguishes a valid zero numerator from an undefined ratio and explains why a missing ratio should not automatically become zero. Google documents that the divisor cannot be zero. Inspect a calculated denominator separately; do not change a genuine zero to one just to produce an answer.
- #NUM! from a negative square-root input: SQRT: check the documented error boundary provides an invalid-input control and valid comparisons. Google explicitly documents #NUM! for negative SQRT input. Trace the expression inside the root. Taking its absolute value changes the question rather than repairing its source.
- #VALUE! from the wrong kind of argument: choose the function’s input contract, not a universal conversion. DATEVALUE’s type checks cover a date that is already numeric: Google requires text for DATEVALUE. Conversely, MIN’s worksheet input rules distinguish numeric inputs, referenced text and direct text arguments; Google documents #VALUE! for entered text arguments. Making every input numeric, or every input text, is not a safe common repair.
These selected diagnostic links were checked against official documentation on October 22, 2026 for ordinary formulas in the rolling Sheets web service, not BigQuery. They reuse existing worked guides rather than claiming a complete error catalogue. No new signed-in execution, native screenshot or full text-coercion matrix is claimed.
These guides use small synthetic examples with independently checked expected results and disclose that native Google Sheets execution was not performed. For file conversion, stale results or general formula diagnosis, begin with Sheets troubleshooting. For function argument details, use the linked function guides rather than copying error-handling wrappers into every calculation.
