ACCRINTM Function in Google Sheets: Formula, Examples & Troubleshooting
Calculate maturity-paid accrued interest with ACCRINTM in Google Sheets. Specify redemption explicitly, compare day-count bases, and distinguish interest from total proceeds.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =ACCRINTM(issue, maturity, rate, redemption, basis) calculates accrued interest for a security whose interest is paid at maturity. Supply the redemption amount explicitly: Google’s reviewed reference marks it optional but does not state its default value.
Verification: NOT_TESTED_IN_GOOGLE_SHEETS. Google documentation was reviewed October 17, 2026. The simple-interest examples and calendar intervals below were calculated independently; native results were not observed.
Syntax and optional arguments
=ACCRINTM(issue, maturity, rate, [redemption], [day_count_convention])
| Argument | Meaning |
|---|---|
issue |
Original issue date |
maturity |
Date the security matures |
rate |
Annual interest rate |
redemption |
Redemption value; optional, default unestablished here |
day_count_convention |
Optional basis; documented default 0 |
Google lists basis 0 US NASD 30/360, 1 Actual/Actual, 2 Actual/360, 3 Actual/365, and 4 European 30/360. Its guidance calls for actual date values, such as those created with DATE, rather than text. Google ACCRINTM reference.
The optional redemption default is not needed for a reproducible worksheet if you provide that argument. Every ACCRINTM example here supplies both optional inputs. The result is interest, not the principal plus interest and not a rate of return on a purchase price.
Example: interest paid after 181 actual days
Use this hypothetical security:
| Cell | Label | Entry |
|---|---|---|
| B2 | Issue | =DATE(2026,1,15) |
| B3 | Maturity | =DATE(2026,7,15) |
| B4 | Annual rate | 6% |
| B5 | Redemption amount | 1000 |
| B6 | Basis | 3 |
- In B8 enter
=ACCRINTM(B2,B3,B4,B5,B6). - Display the amount with at least six decimal places while auditing.
- The expected accrued interest is approximately 29.753425.
- In B9 enter
=B3-B2, displayed as a number. The expected actual interval is 181 days.
For this Actual/365 example, the independent arithmetic is:
=B5*B4*(B3-B2)/365
That is 1000*0.06*181/365. The year fraction is about 0.495890411, not exactly one-half. The full-precision result is retained even if you display the interest as 29.75.
If your separately stated payment assumption is return of the 1,000 amount plus the modeled interest, =B5+B8 gives approximately 1,029.753425. That total is your additional calculation; ACCRINTM alone did not return it.
Advanced application: audit the convention choice
Place basis codes 0, 2, and 3 in D2:D4. In E2 enter =ACCRINTM($B$2,$B$3,$B$4,$B$5,D2) and fill down.
| Basis | Independent interval fraction | Expected interest |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 180/360 | 30.000000 |
| 2 | 181/360 | 30.166667 |
| 3 | 181/365 | 29.753425 |
The first row uses simple non-month-end 30/360 dates; the other two use the actual 181-day difference. This comparison isolates the convention while holding the dates, rate, and redemption amount fixed.
For a scale check, change B5 to 2,000 with basis 3. Expected interest doubles to approximately 59.506849. For a rate check, use 3% on the original 1,000; expected interest halves to approximately 14.876712. These independently derived sensitivities are useful checks against accidentally entering 6 instead of 6% or mixing unit quotes and holding totals.
Troubleshooting and limits
- You expected principal plus interest: ACCRINTM is an accrued-interest calculation. Keep any total-proceeds formula separately labeled.
- An omitted argument changes results: provide redemption and basis explicitly. This guide does not guess an undocumented redemption default.
- A date string is misread: use numeric components in DATE. Google’s DATE reference documents date construction and the underlying day system.
- The security pays periodic coupons: ACCRINTM is documented for maturity-paid interest. Google identifies ACCRINT separately for periodic payments; do not choose solely by a similar name.
- A month-end or leap-year example differs: verify the chosen convention. The simple-date arithmetic shown here is not a complete implementation of all five day-count methods.
- An error occurs: check ordered dates, numeric amounts, the percentage input, and a documented basis. Exact native error labels, text coercion, and fractional-date handling were not established by the reviewed reference.

Google currently documents ACCRINTM. Its introduction, retirement, and last working version are not established. The omitted-redemption behavior and cross-software parity remain unverified. These are synthetic spreadsheet examples, not advice on a security or accounting treatment.
