LibreOffice Calc: Diagnose #NAME? and Error 525
What the error means
#NAME?, code 525, means Calc could not resolve an identifier. Names, function spelling and other identifiers deserve inspection before changing the arithmetic. Official error mapping.
A reproducible undefined-name case
Start a new blank workbook so that an existing custom name cannot affect this example. Enter numeric 12 in A1. In B1 enter =MissingRateForDemo*3, without defining that name. The undefined identifier is the deliberate fault; the documented diagnostic category is 525.
If the intended model is “three times A1,” replace B1’s formula with =A1*3. The independently checked result is 36. Change A1 to 14: the expected result is 42. Restore the intended input afterward.
This repair replaces an undefined name with an explicit known cell. In a real workbook where a shared named rate was intended, repairing the name may be the better solution; do not casually replace it with a local address.
Separate four common investigations
- A named input is misspelled or absent: compare the formula with the workbook’s defined names and the intended range. Inspect both spelling and what the name refers to. Use the named and database ranges guide.
- A function name was entered incorrectly: check the application’s function documentation and language settings. Do not assume a name copied from another spreadsheet or language is supported unchanged.
- Text was entered as an identifier: if the formula is intended simply to return text, it needs a quoted text expression. For example,
="Ready"returns the label Ready. That does not repair a numeric calculation that needs an actual rate or quantity. - An imported workbook depends on an unavailable component: investigate its documented requirements before enabling anything. Do not install unknown add-ins or enable macros just because an error message mentions an unresolved identifier.
A disappearing error is not enough
A replacement name can refer to the wrong range and still calculate a plausible number. Test a second input and trace the dependency. Review downstream totals and any formulas that share the original name. Keep the untouched file until those checks pass.
Do not hide this error behind an empty string or zero. The calculation has not identified the intended input or operation. Conversely, do not rewrite every name if only one formula is faulty. Investigate one minimal failing case first. See the diagnostic hub for symptoms that are not name errors.
Scope and verification
The error mapping is documented in LibreOffice 26.8 desktop Help, checked October 21, 2026. This is a documentation-based desktop guide, not a test of an installed release or a claim about every platform. The worked arithmetic was checked independently; the application steps and displayed errors have not been newly executed. Use a disposable workbook or a separately saved copy.
