JIS Function (LibreOffice Calc)
Convert ASCII and half-width katakana with LibreOffice JIS. See mixed-script examples, voiced katakana and the limits of width conversion versus general text normalization.
Verification status: Eight ordinary formula examples were recalculated in LibreOfficeDev 26.8.0.0.alpha0 (2c87e51eeaa2b413ff4ae097b2705eea1995d8e5) using headless XLSX import and forced recalculation. Exact saved text/positions and both controls were checked. LibreOffice 26.8.1.1 was source-checked only; no stable-release or GUI execution is claimed. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =JIS("LibreOffice") returned “LibreOffice” in the tested development build.
Availability and version history
- Introduced: First release and earliest historical documentation not established; the function is documented in the current Help.
- Supported in: LibreOffice 26.8 Help and 26.8.1.1 registration; no retirement is established.
- Scope: Desktop Calc, English semicolon-separated formulas. Character-width conversion is scoped to the listed inputs.
- Checked: October 14, 2026. Eight listed formulas were recalculated in LibreOfficeDev 26.8.0.0.alpha0 using headless XLSX import. Stable releases and 26.8.1.1 were not executed.
What JIS returns
JIS converts supported half-width ASCII and katakana characters to their full-width forms. It is a width-conversion function, not a language translator or a general transliteration into Japanese. Characters outside the supported conversion are retained according to the documented contract. Function Help.
Syntax and arguments
JIS(Text)
Text is the single required string. The inspected callback delegates conversion to the HALFWIDTH_FULLWIDTH_LIKE_JIS transliteration module. The module’s full character table was not independently inspected; the documented examples and the exact listed strings provide the bounded output evidence.
Eight reproducible examples
The native column is from LibreOfficeDev 26.8.0.0.alpha0, build 2c87e51eeaa2b413ff4ae097b2705eea1995d8e5, using headless XLSX import and forced recalculation. Text is quoted to distinguish empty strings and spaces. Delimiting quotation marks are not returned characters.

Practical worksheet
The ASCII text ABC123 becomes ABC123. It is still a text string, and its letters have different Unicode code points from the original ASCII characters. A visual resemblance does not make the two strings identical identifiers.
The half-width katakana ライト becomes ライト. The voiced pair ガ becomes the single full-width ガ in the listed case. A simple character-by-character offset is therefore not a complete model for every Japanese conversion.
For a mixed field Aライト1, the resulting text is Aライト1. If the goal is presentation, keep the original value available so that a later lookup or export can use the intended form. Do not overwrite an identifier merely because the converted text looks more consistent.
Advanced interpretation and checks
The native callback requires exactly one argument and calls a full-width conversion wrapper. That wrapper loads the named JIS-like transliteration module using the system-language setting. This review inspected the delegation, not every implementation table and locale combination inside that module.
The listed already-full-width ABC remains ABC, and 日本語 remains unchanged. Applying JIS a second time to these particular converted examples is expected to leave them unchanged; the guide’s additional reference checks cover those strings rather than claiming an exhaustive normalization theorem.
ASC is the complementary width-conversion function. A round trip can be useful for a carefully specified input set, but it should not be assumed to recover every original byte sequence or distinction. For example, a transformation that combines a half-width voiced pair changes the character representation even though the displayed sound is preserved.
JIS does not specify a UTF-8 or Shift-JIS file encoding for an export. Width conversion and file encoding are separate operations. Use a text-length or Unicode-inspection function when you need to understand the resulting characters, rather than treating the visual width as a storage-size guarantee. Inspected implementation.
Boundaries and troubleshooting
The empty-string example returns empty text. Numeric coercion, error propagation and all punctuation mappings were not part of these eight ordinary examples, so they should not be inferred from the ASCII letter and katakana results.
The function’s name is native JIS in the inspected English registry. Similar names in another product, including DBCS, require their own identity and behavior evidence. This guide does not certify interchangeability across spreadsheet programs.
The table distinguishes exact returned strings from appearance. Quotation marks in the table delimit text; they are not added by JIS. Where the original and converted forms look alike, compare their actual characters before using them as keys.

The exact saved formulas and text were reconciled, including ODF repeated-space elements. Three empty-text cases across the fixture retain their formulas and empty paragraphs without a serialized value-type attribute; they are recorded as empty formula results. The stale SUM cache refreshed to 3 and the uncached SUM returned 7. This is headless development-build evidence, not a stable-release or GUI test.
