NORM.DIST Function in LibreOffice Calc — Tested Examples

Statistical Beginner LibreOffice Calc

An explanation of LibreOffice Calc NORM.DIST, including tested formulas, examples, expected results and common mistakes.

Tested: Examples checked in LibreOffice Calc 25.2.3.2. What this means

Values of the normal distribution. For a normal distribution, half the mass lies below the mean. That is why both examples calculate 0.5.

Syntax and arguments

=NORM.DIST(Number; Mean; STDEV; C)

LibreOffice Calc formulas generally separate arguments with semicolons (;).

Argument Explanation
Number The value for which the normal distribution is to be calculated.
Mean The mean value. The mean value of the normal distribution.
STDEV Standard deviation. The standard deviation of the normal distribution.
C 0 or FALSE calculates the probability density function. Any other value or TRUE calculates the cumulative distribution function.

Worked examples

Example 1: Find the standard normal cumulative probability at zero

=NORM.DIST(0;0;1;TRUE())

Expected result: 0.5. This value was returned in the LibreOffice Calc 25.2 test.

Example 2: Cumulative normal probability at the mean

=NORM.DIST(1;1;2;TRUE())

Expected result: 0.5. This value was returned in the LibreOffice Calc 25.2 test.

How to interpret the result

For a normal distribution, half the mass lies below the mean. That is why both examples calculate 0.5.

Mistakes and troubleshooting

  • Check inputs and assumptions: The standard deviation must be greater than zero. The cumulative and density modes answer different questions.
  • Check argument order and format: Strings go in quotes, cell references do not. Functions that return arrays may require special entry.
  • Verify your own data: Reproduce the example first. If your formula returns an error, inspect the referenced cells and individual argument values.
