Create and Repair Hyperlinks in LibreOffice Calc

Create named text hyperlinks, edit destinations without losing labels, and test relative file links after moving a practice folder.

Documentation-qualified; native dialogs and moved-file reopening not tested · Editorial standards

A Calc text hyperlink opens a destination; it does not import that destination’s cell values. Use Insert → Hyperlink to manage the address and the visible label independently. A readable label is useful, but never proves that the address behind it is correct.

This guide follows Calc Guide 26.2, Chapter 12, supplemented by Help labelled 26.8, checked on 23 October 2026. It targets English standard menus on Windows/Linux. On macOS, application options are under LibreOffice → Preferences. No native hyperlink opening, saving or move test was executed; the checks below are documented procedures with independently reasoned path expectations.

Make a safe practice pair

Create a disposable folder named LinkPractice. Save two blank workbooks inside it:

  • Index.ods, sheet named Index, with A1 containing Practice links.
  • Details.ods, sheet named Details, with A1 containing Original details.

Use files you created, not untrusted documents. Save both before building file links so each has a known location. Keep a backup of the folder before the later move exercise.

  1. In Index.ods select A3 and choose Insert → Hyperlink.
  2. Choose the Internet category. Enter https://www.libreoffice.org/ in URL and LibreOffice website in Text.
  3. Use Text, not Button, for the link’s Form setting if that control is offered. Save the change with OK, or with Apply followed by Close if those are the buttons your dialog provides. Close alone does not apply a pending edit.
  4. Inspect the link destination before opening it. Right-click the selected hyperlink and choose Open Hyperlink. Verify the browser’s address, not merely the page title.

The guide documents Ctrl-click when the security option requires it, and a plain click when it does not. You do not need to weaken that option to perform this exercise: the context-menu command avoids relying on its current setting. Opening a hyperlink can launch another application or visit a website; do not activate unknown targets just to see what they do.

To edit without accidentally opening the link, select a neighboring cell and use the arrow keys to reach A3, then choose Insert → Hyperlink. If the existing values are not loaded, select the actual hyperlink text or use its Edit Hyperlink context command. Do not proceed with an empty dialog and assume it is editing the old link.

Change only Text to LibreOffice home, confirm, and reopen the dialog to verify that the URL stayed https://www.libreoffice.org/. To change the destination, edit URL separately. Text and URL have different purposes.

In Index.A5 open Insert → Hyperlink and choose Document. Use the browse button beside Path to select Details.ods. Set Text to Open practice details, leave Target empty for this first link, and confirm. Open it and verify Details.A1 = Original details.

For an in-workbook navigation link, create a second sheet named Notes in Index.ods and put Index notes in Notes.A1. Return to Index.A7, open the Document category, and leave Path blank. Use Target in Document to choose the Notes sheet, apply that target, and label the link Go to notes. Confirm the hyperlink and test that it reaches Notes. Selecting the target from the dialog avoids guessing fragment syntax. This guide covers sheet navigation, not every possible named target.

The Hyperlink dialog Help distinguishes Internet, Mail, Document and New Document. You need neither a mail client nor a new-document link, form button or macro for this exercise.

Decide how to store the file path

An absolute file address identifies one fixed location. A relative address identifies a destination starting from the folder containing Index.ods. If both workbooks are siblings, the conceptual relative target is simply Details.ods. If Details is in a subfolder called attachments, it becomes attachments/Details.ods. These are explanations of the relationship, not strings you must force into the dialog.

Open Tools → Options → Load/Save → General. Record the original Save URLs relative to file system setting. For the relative-path experiment, enable it and save Index.ods. Do not change the separate Internet setting, default file format or security controls. The Load/Save Help and guide document this save-time choice; relative linking requires the files to be on the same drive.

A tooltip or dialog may still show the full absolute address because LibreOffice resolves links internally. That display alone is not evidence that the saved link is absolute. Nor does a successful click while both original files remain in place prove that a portable link was saved.

Test relocation without mistaking the original for the copy

  1. Close both workbooks. Copy the whole LinkPractice folder to a different practice location on the same drive, preserving the two filenames and folder relationship.
  2. Open the copied Details.ods, change A1 to Copied details, save, and close it. Leave the original marker unchanged.
  3. Open the copied Index.ods and activate its A5 link.
  4. Check both the opened file location and its A1 marker. A working relative link should reach the copy and show Copied details. An absolute link that still reaches the original may open successfully but show Original details: that is not a successful portable-copy test.
  5. Test A7 separately. The Notes link should remain within the copied Index workbook.

If only Details.ods is moved to another subfolder, the relationship changes. The old relative link is not expected to discover it automatically. Reopen A5’s hyperlink dialog, browse to the known moved file, save, close and reopen Index, and repeat the marker check. Do not “repair” the link by merely changing its visible label.

Restore the original Load/Save setting after the experiment. This does not retroactively rewrite files already saved; saving again under a different setting can change how their links are stored. Keep the successful practice copy separate from production documents.

Select the hyperlink text and use Remove Hyperlink in its context menu. Verify the label remains and no longer offers an active link. Undo immediately if you removed the wrong link. Cutting or clearing the cell is different: it removes content, not just the address.

For failures, check the actual target, the saved workbook location, filename spelling and permissions first. Do not suppress a security warning or change trust settings as a path repair. Sending Index.ods alone does not send Details.ods, and a local path is not usable merely because the recipient can read its label.

See relative and absolute links for the documented path model. For values that must update from another workbook, use external workbook references and update prompts. Formula-generated links have a separate owner: HYPERLINK.
