Fix LibreOffice Calc Err:509 (Missing Operator)

Fix LibreOffice Calc Err:509 using examples of missing multiplication operators and malformed arithmetic formulas.

Updated 10 October 2026 · Formula checks: testing standards

Err:509 in LibreOffice Calc means Operator missing. Calc has parsed part of your formula but expects an arithmetic or other operator between expressions. For example, Calc does not necessarily interpret numbers next to parentheses as implicit multiplication.

A reproducible multiplication mistake

This expression is missing a multiplication symbol between 2 and (:

=2(3+4)

Expected error: Err:509. Put an asterisk between the terms:

=2*(3+4)

Expected result: 14. Use * for multiplication and ^ for exponentiation in Calc formulas.

Another example: cell references

If B2 contains a price and C2 contains a quantity, this is incorrect:

=B2C2

Calc cannot treat adjacent reference text as a multiplication expression. The intended formula is:

=B2*C2

For example, B2 = 5 and C2 = 3 gives 15.

Practical diagnostic checklist

  1. Select the cell and inspect the formula bar; do not rely on a truncated cell display.
  2. Look for adjacent numbers, references or parentheses without an operator.
  3. Confirm that multiplication uses *, not a typographic multiplication sign.
  4. Check commas versus semicolons only after identifying the exact reported error—separator mistakes can trigger other syntax errors.
  5. If the formula was copied from a website, retype unusual quotation marks, minus signs or spaces.
  6. Reduce a long formula to two components, check them, then add more components back.

Error 509 versus other codes

Error Meaning What to inspect first
509 Missing operator *, +, -, /, or comparisons
508 Parenthesis/bracketing problem Opening and closing parentheses
502 Invalid argument Function inputs and range dimensions

The Err:502 guide explains invalid function arguments. For a simpler introduction to formulas, begin with SUM.

Common questions

Does Calc support Excel-style implicit multiplication? Write the multiplication explicitly as *; this is both clearer and more portable.

Will IFERROR fix Err:509? No. It may conceal a problem in some contexts but the missing operator must be restored for the intended calculation.
