BETADIST Function in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor: Syntax and Examples

Statistical Intermediate ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Use the legacy cumulative beta function safely, including its optional bounds and its different out-of-support behavior from BETA.DIST.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer

=BETADIST(0.5,2,1) is expected to return 0.25, the cumulative probability at 0.5 for a beta model with shapes 2 and 1. BETADIST evaluates a CDF only. Its fourth argument is an optional lower bound, not a TRUE/FALSE selector.

The official help uses the phrase “cumulative beta probability density function.” The inspected implementation calls the cumulative helper. Read the returned value as probability at or below x, not as the noncumulative density supplied by modern BETA.DIST with FALSE.

Syntax and defaults

=BETADIST(x, alpha, beta, [A], [B])
Argument Requirement
x Value where cumulative probability is wanted
alpha, beta Positive shape parameters
A Optional lower support endpoint, default 0
B Optional upper support endpoint, default 1

The implementation accepts three through five arguments. Use A < B; supply both bounds explicitly for a custom interval. Do not insert a cumulative flag. A formula copied from BETA.DIST without removing its fourth argument has the wrong contract even if a number happens to be returned.

Step-by-step: cumulative shares on a bounded scale

For a uniform model between 2 and 6:

  1. Enter x values 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in A2:A6.
  2. Enter alpha 1 and beta 1 in D2 and E2.
  3. Enter lower bound 2 and upper bound 6 in F2 and G2.
  4. In B2 enter =BETADIST(A2,$D$2,$E$2,$F$2,$G$2) and fill down.
  5. Format B as a probability or percentage, retaining the numeric results.
x Expected CDF
2 0
3 0.25
4 0.5
5 0.75
6 1

Independent calculation gives (x−2)/4 within this support. These are model probabilities, not counts of observations or guaranteed proportions in a particular small sample.

A nonuniform control is =BETADIST(0.5,2,1), expected 0.25 because its CDF is x². =BETADIST(0.75,2,1)-BETADIST(0.25,2,1) is expected 0.5, since 0.75²−0.25²=0.5625−0.0625. Subtracting cumulative probabilities gives the probability in the interval.

Important implementation distinction: outside the support

The help describes x between A and B. The pinned ONLYOFFICE implementation additionally handles out-of-support values by clamping the cumulative answer after validating the shapes and support width:

Formula Source-derived expectation
=BETADIST(-0.1,1,1) 0
=BETADIST(1.1,1,1) 1
=BETADIST(1,1,1,2,6) 0
=BETADIST(7,1,1,2,6) 1
=BETADIST(0.5,0,1) #NUM!
=BETADIST(3,1,1,2,2) #NUM!

These are source-derived expectations, not native observations. The explicit scale guard rejects B−A ≤ 0. Positive shapes are checked before the clamp, so an out-of-support x does not excuse an invalid shape or interval.

Advanced workflow: migrate a legacy workbook carefully

For in-support inputs, the cumulative equivalent of BETADIST(x,alpha, beta,A,B) is BETA.DIST(x,alpha,beta,TRUE,A,B). For the worked uniform example, both =BETADIST(3,1,1,2,6) and =BETA.DIST(3,1,1,TRUE,2,6) are expected to return 0.25.

A safe migration checks three things: insert TRUE in the correct position, preserve the two support bounds and examine any rows outside the support. The inspected modern implementation returns #NUM! there, unlike legacy clamping. If upstream data can exceed the bounds, decide whether that is a legitimate zero/one tail probability or a data-quality failure before changing formulas. Do not mask errors merely to make the new column resemble the old one.

The modern function also supplies a PDF with FALSE, which BETADIST cannot request. Its density output has different units and interpretation. These differences justify keeping the legacy cumulative contract distinct rather than presenting the two names as universal aliases. Both remain in current official documentation; an undotted name is not evidence of retirement.

Availability, version and verification scope

The official BETADIST reference was checked on October 18, 2026. The implementation discussion uses official SDKJS source tagged v10.0.0.169, matching the version/build designation of Desktop Editors 10.0.0-169. Desktop Editors 10.0 was released on October 13, 2026. The first version introducing this individual function is not established by these sources. Current documentation does not mark it retired or deprecated.

Examples in this guide are expected results from documentation, source inspection and independent calculations, not results observed in the application. They have not been tested in the application or its calculation engine. The unversioned help and pinned source do not establish identical behavior in older versions, mobile clients, every server deployment or imported workbooks. Examples use English names and comma argument separators; adapt formula-entry separators to your editor settings.
