GESTEP in ONLYOFFICE: Threshold Testing with Numeric Flags
Test whether a value meets or exceeds a threshold, including optional default-zero step and exact-boundary examples.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: The official signature is GESTEP(number, [step]). It returns 1 when number is greater than or equal to step, otherwise 0. When step is omitted it defaults to 0. For example, =GESTEP(5,5) is expected to yield 1; =GESTEP(4,5) is expected to yield 0; =GESTEP(-1) is expected to yield 0. These are mathematical expectations rather than recorded native results. Official GESTEP documentation.
When to use GESTEP
Use GESTEP for a numeric minimum threshold: whether a batch temperature has reached a target, whether a count meets a target, whether a budget balance is nonnegative, or whether a measurement is at least a regulatory threshold. The return value is a numeric indicator, useful for adding up qualifying rows. GESTEP is different from DELTA: DELTA reports equality; GESTEP includes all values above the threshold as well. Vendor GESTEP; Vendor DELTA.
This is an exact comparison against the numeric values stored in the cells. If a tolerance around the threshold is needed, document and implement it separately; GESTEP has no vendor-documented tolerance parameter.
Exact syntax and argument definitions
=GESTEP(number, [step])
| Position | Argument | Required? | Documented meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | number |
Yes | Numeric value being compared. | None. |
| 2 | step |
No | Numeric threshold value. | 0 when omitted. |
The comparison is inclusive: equality satisfies the test. You can enter literals =GESTEP(5,5), references =GESTEP(B2,C2), or a default-zero form =GESTEP(B2). More than two arguments, a text threshold and array-spill behaviour are not covered by the vendor’s argument table; no native error or coercion result was observed.
Before entering formulas: reproduce the test worksheet
- Create a blank spreadsheet in an ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor edition you can identify. Use English formula language for the formulas below. Record your Desktop version or the actual Docs/server version and your region if you later report test results.
- Enter the specified headers, then enter the table’s input values in the exact cells shown. Numeric inputs must be numeric cells (without quote marks).
- Enter the formulas into the output cells exactly as shown, beginning with
=. Use Formula → Function to findGESTEPor type the function directly. Fill down only through the named last row; do not accidentally include table headers. - Compare your displayed values against the independently computed expected column. For decimals, change display format or use numeric tolerance rather than expecting identical trailing digits.
- If your result differs, record the formula, underlying cell type, software platform/version, displayed result, separator/locale settings and any error without overwriting the expected-value reference. ONLYOFFICE’s formula-entry and recalculation guide describes recalculating via the Formula tab, or F9 for the workbook.
In A1:G1, type Case, Measurement, Threshold, Formula, Expected threshold flag, Zero-default formula, Expected zero flag. Enter the listed B/C numbers into rows 2–14. Enter =GESTEP(B2,C2) in D2 and fill down to D14. Enter =GESTEP(B2) into F2 and fill through F14; this uses the vendor-documented omitted-step default of 0. Type the expected 1/0 values in E and G. Compare numeric D/E and F/G if executing a native editor test.
Reproducible threshold table and expected flags
| Row | Case (A) | B: measurement | C: threshold | E: GESTEP(B,C) expected |
G: GESTEP(B) expected (step=0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Below positive threshold | 4 | 5 | 0 | 1 |
| 3 | At positive threshold | 5 | 5 | 1 | 1 |
| 4 | Above positive threshold | 6 | 5 | 1 | 1 |
| 5 | Zero/zero | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| 6 | Negative/zero | -1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 7 | Positive/zero | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| 8 | Equal negatives | -5 | -5 | 1 | 0 |
| 9 | Negative above negative | -3 | -5 | 1 | 0 |
| 10 | Negative below negative | -6 | -5 | 0 | 0 |
| 11 | Decimal equality | 2.5 | 2.5 | 1 | 1 |
| 12 | Decimal just below | 2.4999 | 2.5 | 0 | 1 |
| 13 | Decimal just above | 2.5001 | 2.5 | 1 | 1 |
| 14 | Small negative/zero | -0.01 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Notice that the equal rows pass and that a negative number can pass a more negative threshold; for example -3 is greater than -5. The dataset includes both sides of the exact 2.5 threshold. These 26 expected outputs were double-checked with Python and Decimal comparisons, not with an ONLYOFFICE runtime.
Advanced use 1: count measurements that meet a minimum
For the sample rows, =SUM(D2:D14) is mathematically expected to count 8 measurements passing their row-specific minimum; =SUM(F2:F14) counts 8 measurements that are nonnegative. Keep threshold cells numeric and document units in header text, not in numeric cells. To display Pass/Below target, the proposed formula =IF(GESTEP(B2,C2)=1,"Pass","Below target") is a user-facing rendering of the flag. The vendor separately documents IF and SUM.
Advanced use 2: inclusive versus strict limits
GESTEP includes equality. Suppose exactly 10 units is allowed, but more than 10 requires investigation. GESTEP at step=10 would flag both 10 and 11. For a strictly greater-than rule, write a separate comparison, such as =IF(B2>C2,1,0). Do not claim GESTEP implements a strict comparison. Conversely, to classify a value within an inclusive interval [L,U], two logical comparisons such as =AND(B2>=L2,B2<=U2) are easier to audit; trying to assume a single threshold function handles both limits would be incorrect.
Practical quality-control example
Place the observed result in column B and the required minimum in column C. Keep separate columns for calibrated instrument units and specimen identifiers rather than embedding labels into B or C. Compute column D’s numeric flag and summarize only the flags. The expected =GESTEP(-3,-5) flag is 1, because -3 exceeds the threshold -5. A green cell or conditional formatting is only a visual presentation and does not change the calculation; if the instrument tolerance is nonzero, record that as a separate mathematical acceptance rule.
Errors, limits and troubleshooting
| Symptom or question | Likely issue | Verification level and recommended next step |
|---|---|---|
Function name not recognized or a #NAME?-style diagnostic |
Wrong spelling, formula language, or older installed version. | Possible diagnostic only: native error message unverified. Search exact GESTEP in the official function picker. Check target product/version and regional language. |
| Wrong number of arguments | Required versus optional inputs do not match the official signature. | Compare directly with vendor syntax; do not infer that another spreadsheet’s argument defaults also apply. |
| Input stored as text or containing units | Numeric-looking text, an invalid complex literal, or an incompatible unit suffix may not be accepted. | The function page does not exhaustively document coercion. Enter numeric data in Number/General cells or use documented COMPLEX where appropriate; native conversion and error codes remain untested. |
| Unexpected zeros, decimals or tiny differences | Floating-point arithmetic, formatting, or rounding of a displayed value. | Compare underlying numbers using a tolerance; distinguish the mathematical definition from implementation precision. |
| Different separator or localized name | Formula Language and region settings vary. | See ONLYOFFICE Advanced Settings; confirm settings in the target editor rather than guessing syntax. |
| Result looks wrong after editing inputs | Recalculation or mistaken relative reference while filling down. | Inspect Show Formulas, check absolute/relative references, and recalculate from Formula → Calculation as documented. |
| An observation exactly at the threshold is flagged but you expected failure | The documented comparator is greater-than-or-equal, not strictly greater-than. | For a strict test use =IF(B2>C2,1,0) as an explicitly different rule. |
| Omitted step appears to test an unexpected threshold | =GESTEP(B2) compares to zero, not the threshold in a nearby C cell. |
Supply C2 explicitly if you need that row’s threshold; vendor default is zero. |
Do not invent an error value. Where a case is mathematically defined but the editor’s coercion/overflow handling is undocumented, record it as native behaviour unverified, not a guaranteed #VALUE!, #NUM! or other message.

Compatibility, platform, formula language and limitations of this review
Officially documented: The current, unversioned English ONLYOFFICE Docs Spreadsheet Editor function page for GESTEP and Insert Function catalogue list GESTEP as an Engineering function. Checked 2026-10-13 (UTC). This supports the existence, purpose and signature of the function in the documented editor; it is not proof of identical behaviour in all past web integrations, all Desktop Editors builds, or mobile versions.
First-supported version: Not established by this research. The vendor maintains distinct Docs release history and Desktop Editors release history. Their availability does not, by itself, identify the first supported release of GESTEP. Desktop version compatibility: NOT NATIVELY TESTED; browser/web version compatibility: NOT NATIVELY TESTED; historical versions: UNKNOWN; imported workbook round-trip and specific file-format compatibility: NOT TESTED.
English formulas: Examples use an initial = and commas between arguments where necessary, following the official Insert Function instructions. Under File → Advanced Settings, the editor offers Formula Language, Region, and decimal/thousands separators (official Advanced Settings guide). Translated formula names, regional separators and localized decimal entry are not verified here. Do not blindly swap commas for semicolons or translate a function name unless checked in the actual target installation.
Evidence classification: Every result labelled expected is derived from independent mathematical or logical computation, never copied from an ONLYOFFICE screenshot or claimed to have been observed in a running editor. Native Desktop executions: 0. Native web executions: 0. Any error strings described as possible diagnostic are not observed output.
