ONLYOFFICE ISNONTEXT: Test Whether a Cell Is Not Text

Information Intermediate ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Guide to ISNONTEXT in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor with a reproducible CSV-import audit, blank-versus-empty-string cases and validation notes.

Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor. How formula examples are checked

Purpose: Detect values that are not text, including numbers and logical values, before making decisions about imported data.

Quick answer: data type, not appearance

=ISNONTEXT(A2) asks whether the evaluated value in A2 is not text. The official ONLYOFFICE function page describes TRUE for non-text inputs and FALSE for text. This is particularly useful after importing CSV files: the value 0042 may look numeric, but it could be stored as a text identifier and must not automatically be treated as a quantity.

ISNONTEXT is not the same as ISNUMBER. Logical values, blanks and errors are also non-text in the documented classification, so a TRUE result does not prove that arithmetic is safe. Pair it with ISNUMBER when the workflow truly requires numeric inputs.

Syntax and required parameter

=ISNONTEXT(value)
Parameter Required Definition Default
value Yes The value or reference whose text status is checked. None documented

An unquoted cell address such as A2 is a reference; quoted text such as "A2" is a string and does not inspect the cell. The simple syntax needs no argument delimiter. Formulas that nest IF use commas as shown in the English docs; localized function names or separators require checking in the target installation.

Hands-on worksheet: imported record types

In a blank sheet, create column A exactly as below. Format A3 as Text before entering 0042 so that the stored value is text. In row 7, leave A7 completely empty. Place =ISNONTEXT(A2) in B2 and fill through B8.

Row Enter in A Stored/evaluated kind Expected B: ISNONTEXT(A) Teaching point
2 42 Number TRUE Numeric values are not text.
3 0042 Text identifier FALSE A leading zero can be meaningful, even when characters are digits.
4 Valid Text FALSE Ordinary words are text.
5 =TRUE() Logical TRUE A Boolean is not text.
6 ="" Empty string returned by formula FALSE (expected) An empty string is still a text result.
7 (leave blank) Truly empty cell TRUE (expected; native check pending) Do not confuse blank with a text empty string.
8 =NA() Error value TRUE (expected; native check pending) ISNONTEXT is not an error detector.

Only the basic classification is documented in the ONLYOFFICE function page. Blank-reference and formula-empty-string behaviours are expected spreadsheet-style results, corroborated in Microsoft Excel’s IS-functions documentation but not measured natively in ONLYOFFICE. For production rules that depend on those distinctions, test the target web or Desktop build first.

Advanced case: preserve text IDs while accepting quantities

For row 2 (42) and row 3 (0042 stored as text), this cautious formula can route values by type:

=IF(ISNUMBER(A2),"Numeric input",IF(ISTEXT(A2),"Text input","Other/blank/error"))

Expected results: row 2 Numeric input, row 3 Text input, row 5 Other/blank/error. This is preferable to treating every ISNONTEXT-positive value as a number. It uses the explicitly documented functions ISNUMBER and ISTEXT.

If the task is instead to flag any value that is not a text label, use:

=IF(ISNONTEXT(A2),"Review non-text input","Text OK")

Rows 2 and 5 should be tagged Review non-text input, and rows 3 and 4 Text OK. Blank and error rows need edition-specific validation if they influence a real approval process.

Why numeric-looking text matters

An imported product code such as 0042 is often intended to stay a string. Formatting a column as Number or automatically coercing it during import can discard leading zeros. ISNONTEXT reports the resulting stored type, not what the user intended the identifier to mean. Inspect the import settings and the actual cell value before applying conversion formulas.

Troubleshooting table

Symptom Common cause Practical diagnostic
42 returns FALSE The cell may contain numeric-looking text. Compare ISNUMBER(A2) and ISTEXT(A2); inspect the formula bar.
TRUE is assumed to mean numeric ISNONTEXT includes more than numbers. Use ISNUMBER when requiring a quantity.
Blank and ="" produce different classifications A truly empty cell differs from a formula returning text. Compare ISBLANK, ISTEXT and the formula bar; native check on your version.
Import changes the results unexpectedly Import can change the stored type. Use a small fixed fixture and document import settings.
Nested IF formula fails after pasting Locale separator or localized function name mismatch. Build the formula with the Function Arguments dialog.
A source error is mistaken for a valid non-text value Type checking does not correct errors. Use ISERROR or ISNA alongside type checks.

What this does and does not establish

ONLYOFFICE’s function catalogue lists ISNONTEXT under Information. This establishes documented availability in the current unversioned English online help, not that every past Docs, Desktop, mobile or cloud build behaves identically. Microsoft documents a similarly named Excel function; imported-workbook parity remains to be tested for the target editions.

Official documentation and claim-by-claim checking

The exact function description and syntax are documented in ONLYOFFICE’s ISNONTEXT reference; the ONLYOFFICE Insert Function index lists it under the Information category. Both were checked on 2026-10-13 UTC. The index is unversioned online documentation, not an independently confirmed feature matrix for every Docs web, Desktop Editors or mobile version.

Verification limits: All table and advanced examples were independently classified from documented type/error rules and explicit inputs. No native ONLYOFFICE execution, localized formula test or cross-editor import test was performed. Blank, formula-empty and array edge cases remain qualified where noted.
