ONLYOFFICE ISREF Function: Recognize Real Cell References

Information Intermediate ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor

Test reference expressions in ONLYOFFICE ISREF and learn why a cell reference differs from address-like text.

Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor. How formula examples are checked

Purpose. ISREF reports whether its argument is a valid reference, not whether the contents of a cell look like a coordinate. The official ONLYOFFICE ISREF page calls it an Information function that checks the validity of a cell reference.

Quick answer: two different ideas

=ISREF(A2)
=ISREF("A2")

With A2 as an existing cell, the expected results are TRUE and FALSE respectively: the first argument is the actual cell reference A2, whereas the second is merely a text string containing one letter and one digit. Do not use ISREF on plain text to validate addresses typed by users; that would answer a different question.

Exact syntax and parameter behaviour

=ISREF(value)
Parameter Required Documented meaning Default
value Yes A value, reference, expression or defined name to test for reference status. ONLYOFFICE explicitly lists empty cells, errors, logical values, text, numbers, references and names as possible values to test. None documented.

ISREF returns a logical TRUE if the argument is a valid cell reference; otherwise FALSE. This is not an address-string parser or a way to verify that some external workbook exists. The official syntax has one required argument, hence no internal argument separator in the basic example. For nested formulas, the English ONLYOFFICE help uses commas, but an installed localized editor may require a different separator or localized function spelling.

Reproducible worksheet with reference-vs-content controls

Make the following small sheet:

Cell What to enter Reason
A2 42 Numeric content held in a real worksheet cell.
A3 A2 (plain text; do not type an equals sign) Text that resembles a coordinate.
A4 (leave blank) Valid cell location with no value.

Then enter each formula in a free cell, such as C2:C6:

Formula Expected result Explanation
=ISREF(A2) TRUE A2 is a cell reference regardless of its numeric content.
=ISREF(A3) TRUE A3 is a valid reference despite containing text resembling an address.
=ISREF(A4) TRUE The cell location remains a reference even when blank.
=ISREF("A2") FALSE Quoted address-like characters are text, not a reference.
=ISREF(42) FALSE A constant number is not a reference.

The differences follow the official definition and an independent classification of reference expressions versus constants; they are expected values not observed inside ONLYOFFICE. This test avoids ambiguous invalid-name syntax, deleted sheets and error propagation, which vary among versions and require application testing.

Advanced case: convert a text address into a reference deliberately

The ONLYOFFICE INDIRECT reference says INDIRECT obtains a reference from a text string and accepts an optional A1/R1C1 mode. Its English syntax is INDIRECT(ref_text, [a1]); omitting a1 uses A1-style syntax. If A2 exists, this compositional test may be useful:

=ISREF(INDIRECT("A2"))

Expected, conditional compatibility result: TRUE if INDIRECT successfully constructs and passes an A2 reference to ISREF. Because ONLYOFFICE describes INDIRECT as an array-related function, its exact nested-reference behaviour may depend on the editor/version and array-entry path. This composite formula was not executed in ONLYOFFICE; treat it as an explicit native-test candidate, not an observed success. The basic =ISREF(A2) example is the recommended reproducible first test.

A user-typed address in D2 is not validated by =ISREF(D2)—that checks D2 itself. Nor is a named range automatically invalid just because it is not a string literal; defined-name resolution must be checked in the workbook that uses it.

Troubleshooting and safety checks

Issue What is happening Better step
=ISREF("A2") is FALSE even though A2 exists Text is not a reference expression. Test =ISREF(A2); use INDIRECT only after verifying its syntax and behaviour.
=ISREF(A3) is TRUE but A3 displays text A2 ISREF evaluates the argument reference, not text in the referenced cell. Distinguish testing a reference from parsing a value’s contents.
=ISREF(A4) returns TRUE for an empty cell An empty cell can still be a valid reference. Use ISBLANK to ask whether the referenced cell has a value.
A copied formula points somewhere unexpected Relative references change during copy. Inspect the formula bar and pin coordinates with $ if the reference must remain fixed.
INDIRECT or a name fails unexpectedly Malformed text, deleted sheet, invalid name or unsupported array context could be involved. First test a real direct reference, then test the nested expression separately.
A formula imported from Excel behaves differently Edition, reference evaluation or array rules can vary. Test in the target ONLYOFFICE installation; do not infer perfect parity.
Formula cannot be parsed Locale changes argument syntax in compound expressions. Use the Function Arguments dialog and verify installed product language.

Use ONLYOFFICE ISBLANK for cell-empty tests, ISNUMBER for numeric contents, and ISREF for reference identity. Each asks a different question.

Cross-product and platform scope

Microsoft’s IS-functions documentation also distinguishes ISREF on a real cell reference from values of other types. This is a documentation comparison, not a native Excel/ONLYOFFICE interoperability test. For complicated named ranges, structured tables, arrays, external links and reference expressions, test the actual product build.

The current ONLYOFFICE Insert Function list includes ISREF under Information functions. ONLYOFFICE Docs 10.0 was announced October 10, 2026, but neither page supplies a precise feature-introduction version or a cross-version web/Desktop support table for this function. Those are unverified, as are mobile and regional-language formula details.
