ROW Function in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor: Syntax and Examples
Find the one-based row index for a cell, build positional counters and handle optional references and arrays in ONLYOFFICE.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer
=ROW(D7) returns the expected row number 7. If you enter =ROW() in F12, the expected result is 12 because omitting reference uses the formula cell’s row. These are independently reasoned expected results, not observations from a live ONLYOFFICE installation. The current ONLYOFFICE ROW reference was checked October 13, 2026.
Purpose and appropriate use
ROW answers “which worksheet row contains this cell?” rather than “how many rows exist in a range?”. Use it to label row positions, construct quick position checks, and verify the endpoints of a rectangular import. It does not retrieve cell content or count nonblank rows.
Exact official syntax, argument order, types and defaults
=ROW([reference])
reference(optional):referenceis an optional cell reference. If omitted, the official article says the result is the row of the cell containing the formula. It offers no numeric or text default argument.- Required arguments: none. Documented optional arguments: one. Argument order: only
reference, when supplied. - Result: a one-based worksheet row number for the referenced cell (or the formula’s position if the argument is omitted).
- Array status: the ONLYOFFICE article identifies this as an array formula and links the array-entry procedure. This does not authorize assuming that all Excel 365 dynamic-spill behavior is available.
- Regional formula considerations: one-argument formulas need no parameter delimiter. The English documentation uses function names shown here; nested
IFuses English-formula commas in this guide. Local formula language and punctuation may differ.

Current official documentation, web/desktop versions and locale
The current English ONLYOFFICE Spreadsheet Editor catalogue contains ROW under Lookup and Reference Functions. The Formula tab guide depicts both online and desktop interfaces. These common help pages do not state a minimum release number that guarantees identical ROW results in Docs/web versus Desktop Editors. The documentation version is unversioned; no exact Desktop Editors or Docs build was installed or executed. Platform parity, localized names, and imported-file edge cases therefore remain unverified.
ONLYOFFICE Advanced Settings documents Formula Language and Region controls. Our examples use English names, A1 references and commas inside the two-argument/three-argument IF expression. Verify the formula autocomplete and syntax tooltip in your own localized editor. Region-specific number display separators and function-argument delimiters should not be conflated without local testing.
Reproducible practice worksheet
Open a blank worksheet. Enter the following sample; the numbers and order IDs are teaching data, not a downloaded workbook or native-test fixture. Put formula outputs in unused cells outside A1:D7, except the clearly specified optional array destination.
| Cell | Type the following | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| A1:D1 | Order, Region, Units, Status |
Four headers |
| A2:D2 | T101, West, 4, Ready |
First order |
| A3:D3 | T102, East, 2, Hold |
Second order |
| A4:D4 | T103, West, 6, Ready |
Third order |
| A5:D5 | Keep A5 truly empty; enter West, 3, Hold in B5:D5 |
A blank identifier does not erase a cell’s position |
| A6:D6 | T105, North, 8, Ready |
Fifth order |
| A7:D7 | T106, East, 1, Ready |
Sixth order |
An empty A5 still has a physical location: row 5, column A. A formula that reports its position does not tell you whether the cell contains text.
Formula examples and expected outputs
| Formula / placement | Expected outcome | Derivation |
|---|---|---|
=ROW(A2) |
2 | A2 occupies row 2. |
=ROW(D7) |
7 | D7 occupies row 7. |
=ROW(A5) |
5 | The empty content of A5 does not remove row position 5. |
=ROW($C$4) |
4 | Absolute reference still points to row 4. |
=ROW(B3) |
3 | Column B does not change row 3. |
=ROW() [entered in F12] |
12 | Omitted argument points to the formula cell’s row. |
=ROW(A7)-ROW(A2)+1 |
6 | Inclusive row span: 7−2+1. |
=ROW(A2)+ROWS(A2:A7)-1 |
7 | 2+6−1. |
=ROW(A5)=5 |
TRUE | 5 equals 5. |
=IF(ROW(A5)=5,"in row 5","review") |
in row 5 | The condition is true. |
=ROW(D2)+2 |
4 | 2+2. |
=ROW(A2)-ROW($A$2)+1 |
1 | Initial fill-down counter in F2. |
For the line annotated “entered in F12”, type only =ROW() in F12; the bracketed placement note is not part of the formula. Every outcome above is a predictable expected coordinate calculation. Native ONLYOFFICE desktop and browser execution were not performed, so do not use the table as a test report.
Advanced cases and array workflows
Explicit cell arguments versus a range
When a function needs one number, supply a single-cell reference such as =ROW(D7) instead of relying on a larger array’s implicit conversion to a single value. If you instead want a series, use the documented array formula workflow below. The official function article specifically categorizes ROW as an array formula and uses reference in its signature; it does not enumerate all scalar behaviors for multi-cell arguments.
Array use to list worksheet row numbers
Select the six empty output cells E2:E7. Type =ROW(A2:A7) in the formula bar and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. The ONLYOFFICE array formula instructions describe selecting an output range and using this shortcut, and say the editor inserts braces automatically; do not type curly braces yourself. Expected output in E2:E7: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 top-to-bottom. This is a documentation-guided expected result, not observed execution. If a different version displays only one result, first confirm the output range and the array-entry method.
A row-number cross-check for imported data
=ROW(A7)-ROW(A2)+1 is expected 6. It counts inclusive row positions from 2 to 7 and can be compared with =ROWS(A2:A7) (also 6). Unlike ROWS, the formula assumes you correctly supply both endpoints. It does not count nonempty entries, so a blank A5 remains inside the six-slot range.
Build a portable but position-dependent sequence
Enter =ROW(A2)-ROW($A$2)+1 in F2. Copy downward to F7. Expected results are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, provided the relative reference A2 becomes A3…A7 while $A$2 stays fixed. This is a worksheet numbering technique, not a stable ID system: inserted, moved or sorted rows may change the numbers. Check the copied formulas in your editor before relying on them.
Common problems, limits and troubleshooting
ROW()is not counting a range. Its meaning is location (one-based row number), unlikeROWS(array), which gives range height.- You used a blank cell.
ROW(A5)is still expected 5 even when A5 is empty; content and coordinate are different concepts. - The argument is omitted. The documented
ROW([reference])makes the argument optional. The result depends on where the formula is entered:=ROW()entered in F12 is expected 12, not the position of whatever data row you last clicked. Confirm the formula cell. - You expected multiple results from a multi-cell reference. The source identifies this as an array formula. Follow the documented preselection and Ctrl+Shift+Enter procedure for output E2:E7; otherwise a single-cell result is not a reliable array validation.
- You hand-entered braces. ONLYOFFICE’s array guide says braces are generated by the editor and cannot be entered manually. Delete invalid literal braces and enter the formula using the supported keyboard workflow.
- You entered a text address.
ROW("A5")supplies text instead of the documented reference; the error produced in each release was not tested. UseROW(A5). - Unexpected #REF!, #VALUE! or parsing error. These are possible spreadsheet diagnostics, not particular errors claimed to have been observed. Verify the source reference exists, the formula starts with
=, parentheses are balanced, and your local formula language accepts the English name. - Range union, 3-D, structured table or R1C1 reference. Behavior is not specified by the checked function page; no compatibility claim without testing the target platform and locale. Avoid silently transferring Excel-only behaviors to ONLYOFFICE.
- Row insertions change the answer. ROW reports current geometry. It cannot serve as a permanent primary key for inventory or audit logs.
Excel cross-compatibility and other editors
Microsoft’s Excel ROW documentation confirms a matching basic signature ROW([reference]) and describes the one-based worksheet position, while also detailing range/array behavior that varies with Excel editions. ONLYOFFICE’s own ROW documentation is the authority for THIS guide. In particular, the vendor’s Insert Array Formulas explicitly documents selecting an output block and using Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Excel for Microsoft 365 can use newer dynamic-array entry behavior; do not assume that ONE keyboard workflow or all spill cases transfer perfectly between the products. No native parity checks were run. This page makes no blanket compatibility claims about LibreOffice, Google Sheets, OpenOffice, Apple Numbers or mobile editors.
