ISREF Function (OpenOffice Calc)
Learn the ISREF function in Apache OpenOffice Calc: Returns TRUE if value is a reference.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in OpenOffice Calc. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: what does ISREF do?
ISREF checks the type of its argument: does the expression supply a reference to an actual cell or cell range, rather than a literal number, a text string that looks like an address, or an error value? It returns logical TRUE for a reference and logical FALSE for other documented inputs. It does not ask whether the referenced cell is filled in, contains a number, holds a formula, or has valid data. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INFO]
=ISREF(value)
Examples taken directly from Apache’s function reference: [AO-ISREF]
| Enter as a formula | Expected answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
=ISREF(C5) |
TRUE |
C5 is a cell reference. |
=ISREF(A1:B3) |
TRUE |
A1:B3 is a cell-range reference. |
=ISREF("A5") |
FALSE |
The quotes make A5 text, not a reference. |
=ISREF(NA()) |
FALSE |
NA() creates an error, not a reference. |
=ISREF(A9999999) |
FALSE |
Apache uses this as an example of an address beyond the available worksheet. |
Practical distinction: =ISREF(C5) is a reference check even if the content of C5 changes. To check whether C5 itself is empty, use the separate ISBLANK function; to ask whether C5 contains a formula, use ISFORMULA. Those are different questions, not substitutes for ISREF. Exact Apache OpenOffice syntax
| Position | Parameter | Required | Type and meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | value |
Yes | A reference, range reference, range name, literal, or expression to test. See the documented cases below for differences between the reference itself and text/evaluated values. | None |
The function has one positional argument. No optional argument, second argument, numeric rounding mode, array mode or locale-specific flag is specified in Apache’s ISREF reference. ISREF() and ISREF(A1;B1) do not match its documented syntax; this manuscript does not invent the exact version-dependent error code produced by such invalid entries. [AO-ISREF]
- Cell versus text:
C5without quotes is a syntactic reference."C5"in quotes is text and receivesFALSE. The contents of a cell containing the textC5are also not automatically turned into a reference. [AO-ISREF] - Named ranges: If
Scoresis a name actually defined for a range,=ISREF(Scores)is expected to returnTRUE. An undefined name can cause#NAME?rather than a cleanFALSE, as Apache’s source explicitly illustrates. [AO-ISREF] [AO-NAMED] - Reference-producing functions:
INDIRECT(text)interprets a valid cell-address string as a reference.ISREF(INDIRECT(C1))can therefore returnTRUEwhereISREF(C1)tests only whetherC1is a reference. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
Locale and version scope
The examples use English function names and cell addresses in A1 notation. Because ISREF accepts exactly one argument, it needs no separator internally. In nested Calc examples, Apache convention uses semicolons (;) to separate different arguments to functions such as IF or ADDRESS; separator, sheet-name notation and translated function names may differ in some localized application interfaces or imported spreadsheet files. No region-specific deployment was tested here. [AO-ISREF] [AO-SPREADSHEET]
On 2026-10-12, the Apache OpenOffice official download page displayed version 4.1.16 as the released edition. The reference material cited here is Apache’s Calc documentation, including an older function-help page and the AOO 4.1 Calc Guide. These pages are evidence of documented support, not native confirmation of every edge case under 4.1.16 on Windows, macOS or Linux. See validation limitations below. Worked example 1: build the smallest reproducible sheet
Open a blank spreadsheet. Enter the following examples in an unused section, such as D2 through D7. Because this test is about references rather than the data inside them, it is fine to leave A1, B3 and C5 empty; this avoids unintended comparisons with cell content. [AO-ISREF]
- Enter
=ISREF(C5)in D2. - Enter
=ISREF(A1:B3)in D3. - Enter
=ISREF("A5")in D4. - Enter
=ISREF(NA())in D5. - Enter
=ISREF(A9999999)in D6 (this is an official documented out-of-bounds example, not a recommended normal reference). - Enter
=ISREF(42)in D7; the predictedFALSEis a straightforward inference from the documented non-reference rule, not a separately published Apache example.
| Cell | Formula | Expected displayed result | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| D2 | =ISREF(C5) |
TRUE |
Apache’s explicit example. [AO-ISREF] |
| D3 | =ISREF(A1:B3) |
TRUE |
Apache’s explicit example. [AO-ISREF] |
| D4 | =ISREF("A5") |
FALSE |
Apache’s explicit example. [AO-ISREF] |
| D5 | =ISREF(NA()) |
FALSE |
Apache’s explicit example. [AO-ISREF] |
| D6 | =ISREF(A9999999) |
FALSE |
Apache’s explicit example; worksheet-bound specifics still need native confirmation. [AO-ISREF] |
| D7 | =ISREF(42) |
FALSE |
Documentation-based inference: a number is not a cell reference. [AO-ISREF] |
Independent reasoning: D2 and D3 are syntactically valid references; D4 is text because of the quotation marks; NA() produces an error; 42 is a numeric constant rather than an address. These distinctions predict the values shown. No copy of Calc was launched, so the rows are not natively observed test results. A version discrepancy should be logged rather than silently corrected in the published article. [AO-ISREF]
Worked example 2: turn address text into a real reference
A text cell storing B2 is useful in a configurable report, but ISREF does not interpret the text itself as a reference. Apache’s INDIRECT function is the documented bridge from a string to a reference. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
Start a new blank worksheet tab (or clear D2:D7 from the first exercise) so the example does not overwrite the earlier ISREF test formulas. Set up this small worksheet:
| Cell | Enter exactly | Role |
|---|---|---|
| B2 | 5 |
First data value |
| B3 | 8 |
Second data value |
| B4 | 11 |
Third data value |
| D2 | B2 (plain text, without =) |
Address-string configuration |
| E2 | =ISREF(D2) |
Is D2 itself a reference? |
| E3 | =ISREF("B2") |
Is a literal address string a reference? |
| E4 | =ISREF(INDIRECT(D2)) |
Did INDIRECT make the D2 text into a reference? |
| E5 | =ISREF(INDIRECT("B2:B4")) |
Does INDIRECT represent a range reference? |
| E6 | =SUM(B2:B4) |
Ordinary sum control |
| E7 | =SUM(INDIRECT("B2:B4")) |
Sum via a text-address-converted reference |
| Result cell | Expected output | Method |
|---|---|---|
| E2 | TRUE |
D2 is an actual cell reference, irrespective of its text content. This does not validate the string B2. [AO-ISREF] |
| E3 | FALSE |
A quoted string is not a reference. [AO-ISREF] |
| E4 | TRUE |
Apache explicitly documents ISREF(INDIRECT(C1)) returning TRUE when C1 contains a valid address string; same reference conversion is applied here. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT] |
| E5 | TRUE |
Documentation-based inference from INDIRECT’s ability to return a range reference. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT] |
| E6 | 24 |
Independent sum 5+8+11=24. |
| E7 | 24 |
Same independent sum, plus the documented conversion of string "B2:B4" to a range. [AO-INDIRECT] |
Do not confuse E2 with validation of D2’s contents. ISREF(D2) asks about the cell D2, which remains a legitimate address even if the cell’s text is misspelled or changed. E4 follows the stronger intent to interpret D2’s address string, but may itself encounter a parsing/reference error if that string is invalid. This guide does not claim that ISREF(INDIRECT(text)) is a guaranteed error-trapping technique for malformed text. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
Advanced use: dynamic range selection, with appropriate limits
To allow a user to change which range is summed, put the text B2:B4 in D4, then enter =SUM(INDIRECT(D4)) in E8. With the three values above, the expected result is 24. Change D4 to another valid range address that you deliberately prepared (such as B2:B3) and the expected total becomes 13. These totals are independently calculated from the sample inputs, while the dynamic address conversion is supported by Apache’s INDIRECT documentation. [AO-INDIRECT]
Use =ISREF(INDIRECT(D4)) in E9 only as an exploratory validity diagnostic for known-valid addresses. A malformed or missing address is not proved safe just because it appears inside ISREF: undocumented exact error behaviour needs a 4.1.16 application test. Do not use E9 as the sole validation step for untrusted user-entered range expressions. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
Worked example 3: a defined name versus an undefined name
Named ranges improve readability but still refer to actual ranges, not to arbitrary text tokens. The Apache OpenOffice 4.1 Calc Guide documents defining names using Insert → Names → Define. [AO-NAMED]
- Select B2:B4 in the worksheet you just created.
- Choose Insert → Names → Define. Define the name
Scoresfor that range and confirm it. - In F2 enter
=ISREF(Scores). - In F3 enter
=SUM(Scores)for an independent confirmation of the range contents. - In F4 enter
=ISREF(MissingScores)without defining that name. The source documents that an undefined name can return#NAME?rather thanFALSE(see the officialrange2example). [AO-ISREF]
| Formula | Expected result | Evidence and uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
=ISREF(Scores) |
TRUE |
Apache documents TRUE for a name assigned to A1:B3; substituting the defined Scores name is a reasoned equivalent. [AO-ISREF] [AO-NAMED] |
=SUM(Scores) |
24 |
Independently calculated 5+8+11. Named-range support is documented by Apache. [AO-NAMED] |
=ISREF(MissingScores) |
#NAME? |
Apache’s own undefined-name example. The precise display/localization needs native confirmation. [AO-ISREF] |
Important edge case: The Apache function page itself notes uncertainty in the ODFF/OpenFormula standard about undefined range names. Do not turn this into a blanket promise that every undefined named range returns FALSE, or that every edition handles the same input identically. Instead, distinguish undefined-name parse errors from expressions evaluating to an ordinary non-reference value. [AO-ISREF]
ISREF compared with other information functions
| Question you are actually asking | Function / method | Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Is this expression a cell or range reference? | ISREF(value) |
Tests reference identity, not cell content. [AO-ISREF] |
| Does a cell contain a formula? | ISFORMULA(cell) |
Tests formula presence; a reference can point to either formula or nonformula data. [AO-INFO] |
| Is the referenced cell truly blank? | ISBLANK(cell) |
Tests blankness rather than validity of its address. [AO-ISBLANK] |
| Is the evaluated value an error? | ISERROR(value) |
Tests error output, not whether a valid reference was supplied. Apache documents some error-propagation issues in nested expressions. [AO-ISERROR] |
| Can address text be resolved to a reference? | INDIRECT(text) |
Converts a string to a reference; it has separate parsing and portability concerns. [AO-INDIRECT] |
| Can an address be constructed as text? | ADDRESS(row; column; …) |
Produces an address string, which is not itself a reference for ISREF until converted. [AO-SPREADSHEET] |
What ISREF does not do
ISREF is not a data-quality detector, a formula auditor, a check that referenced numbers are nonzero, or a protection against import errors. A valid reference may point to an empty cell or to something you did not intend to read. For those questions combine separate checks and test error propagation explicitly in your installed version. Avoid claiming ISREF(A2) validates the contents of A2. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INFO]
Troubleshooting and limits
I wrote "A1" and got FALSE. This is expected: quotation marks make the address text, not a reference. Use ISREF(A1) when you want to test a direct reference, or INDIRECT("A1") when converting address text, subject to valid syntax. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
I used a named range and got an error. Confirm that the name was actually defined in this workbook, that you typed it exactly, and that the named range points to the intended cells. The documented undefined-name example produces #NAME?. The AOO 4.1 Guide explains how to create and inspect names. [AO-ISREF] [AO-NAMED]
I used a reference outside the sheet. Apache’s A9999999 example returns FALSE in its historical help. Maximum address bounds are platform/version-dependent; do not assume all spreadsheet products or future Calc releases have identical sheet limits. [AO-ISREF]
I entered =ISREF(D2) expecting it to check whether D2’s text is a valid cell address. D2 is itself a genuine reference. Use INDIRECT(D2) to interpret its content, but do not treat that as guaranteed safe for malformed strings. Apache’s function documentation does not provide a universal error-code contract for all malformed INDIRECT cases. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
I need the value of a referenced cell. ISREF returns a logical answer, not the referenced content. Directly use the cell reference or a carefully constructed INDIRECT, and separately validate whether the content fits your calculation. [AO-ISREF] [AO-INDIRECT]
I imported a worksheet from Excel or another application. The ISREF concept is similar across spreadsheet software, but the exact reference syntax, named-range resolution, sheet separators, locale options, out-of-bounds handling and error propagation are not independently validated across products here. Apache explicitly notes cross-application address syntax differences for INDIRECT. Do not infer full compatibility from another vendor’s help page. [AO-INDIRECT] [AO-SPREADSHEET]
I see a comma/semicolon or #NAME? problem. For the one-argument ISREF the separator is irrelevant. For nested multi-argument formulas, use syntax appropriate to Apache OpenOffice Calc and your locale; ensure an English function name is recognized in your installation. A misspelled or undefined named range is a distinct problem from a quoted reference string. [AO-ISREF] [AO-NAMED]

- ISFORMULA — test whether a cell contains a formula
- ISBLANK — test whether a cell is empty
