YIELDDISC Function (OpenOffice Calc)

Financial Intermediate OpenOffice Calc

Calculate a discount security’s yield with OpenOffice YIELDDISC. Compare price-based return with DISC and inspect basis-specific February differences.

Verification status: Eight ordinary reference formulas were recalculated in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16 on Linux x86-64, Build 9816, through generated native ODF and GUI hard recalculation. Saved identities, inputs and results were checked. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =YIELDDISC(DATE(2024;1;1);DATE(2024;7;1);95;100;0) returned 0.105263157895 in the tested Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16 build.

Availability and version history

  • Introduced: First release not established; documented by OpenOffice.org 3.3.
  • Supported in: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16; this is a verified release, not a final supported version.
  • Scope: Desktop Calc, English function names and semicolon-separated formulas.
  • Checked: October 14, 2026. Eight ordinary reference formulas were recalculated from generated ODF in 4.1.16 on Linux x86-64, Build 9816. Source and independent arithmetic were checked.

What YIELDDISC returns

YIELDDISC annualizes the holding-period return (Redemption/Price)-1 using the release’s GetYearFrac helper. It uses the purchase price in the return denominator. DISC instead measures the discount against redemption, so the two rates answer different questions. Release implementation.

Syntax and arguments

YIELDDISC(Settlement;Maturity;Price;Redemption[;Basis])
  • Settlement, Maturity: date-only inputs with Settlement earlier.
  • Price, Redemption: positive amounts on the same face-value scale, commonly per 100.
  • Basis: optional 0; alternatives 1–4 select actual/actual, actual/360, actual/365 or European 30/360.
  • No coupon rate or payment frequency is supplied; this is not a periodic-coupon yield solver.

Eight reproducible examples

The native column contains saved 4.1.16 results; independent references use high-precision arithmetic and the stated source rules. Values are shown to twelve decimal places where needed. Enter DATE expressions directly rather than locale-dependent date text.

Practical worksheet

For January 1 to July 1, 2024, Price=95, Redemption=100 and basis 0, the holding-period return is 5/95. Dividing by 0.5 gives approximately 0.105263157895, or 10.5263157895% annualized.

The comparable DISC calculation gives 10%, because its holding-period discount is 5/100. Their ratio is Redemption/Price=100/95 when dates and basis are identical. This difference is a denominator choice, not a rounding error.

Advanced interpretation and checks

For the same price pair, actual/actual uses 182/366 and produces approximately 0.105841526894. Actual/360 and actual/365 produce 0.104106419896 and 0.105552342394. Keep the return numerator and selected day fraction separate when auditing a worksheet.

At February 29–March 31, 2024, basis 0 uses 30/360 and returns 0.631578947368; basis 4 uses 31/360 and returns 0.611205432937. INTRATE uses GetYearDiff instead, so a superficially similar return formula can disagree at these endpoints. Matching ordinary half-year examples does not establish full equivalence.

Boundaries and troubleshooting

The source requires positive Price and Redemption, Settlement earlier than Maturity and a supported basis. All native examples use ordinary dates and positive amounts; invalid domains, fractional dates and empty-cell conversions were not executed.

A price above redemption would change the sign of the arithmetic return, but that case was not in the native fixture. The annualized number is a simple convention-based rate, not a compounded periodic-coupon yield or a forecast of future value. Use a calculation whose cash-flow and day-count assumptions match the task.

Official evidence and checking scope

The generated ODF produced the informational load warning “Not all attributes could be read.” The sheet was hard-recalculated and saved separately. All eight ordinary function identities, inputs and results were reconciled; a stale SUM cache changed from 999999 to 3 and an uncached SUM returned 7. This establishes the stated examples, not every workbook style or invalid input. Other explanatory identities are independent calculations. The authoring-tool XLSX was not executed in OpenOffice, and its preview values are not the native results reported here.
