Fix Formula Text Instead of Results in OpenOffice Calc
Diagnose formula display mode, text-formatted cells and leading apostrophes in Apache OpenOffice Calc, with a small repair test.
If a cell displays =B2*C2 instead of a number, first check whether Calc is displaying formulas throughout the sheet. If only one or two cells are affected, inspect how those entries were stored. Changing the display setting and repairing a text entry are different operations.
Scope and a safe test
These steps target Apache OpenOffice Calc 4.1 desktop, with English Windows/Linux menu labels. On macOS, application options are reached through OpenOffice โ Preferences rather than Tools โ Options. Versioned 4.1.16 Help source and the official Calc guide inform the documented workflow. The synthetic formula-display and repair example below was tested in Apache OpenOffice Calc 4.1.17 (AOO4117m2, Build 9818, revision 49c05bc6fd) on Linux x86_64, with English UI and the default English (USA) number setting, on October 16, 2026. Windows, macOS and other locales were not tested.
Work on a copy. In a new sheet, enter this small example manually:
| Cell | Enter | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| A1:C1 | Item, Quantity, Unit price | Headings in separate cells |
| A2 | Notebook | Sample item |
| B2 | 3 | Numeric quantity |
| C2 | 8 | Numeric price |
| D1 | Total | Heading |
| D2 | =B2*C2 | Working calculation |
The expected D2 result is 24. The input line above the sheet still shows the formula when D2 is selected; that is normal. The problem addressed here is formula text displayed inside the cell itself.
1. Check formula display before editing data
- Choose Tools โ Options โ OpenOffice Calc โ View.
- Under Display, clear Formulas if selected, then confirm.
- Look at D2 and several other known formulas. If they now show results, stop: the formulas did not need repair.
This is the documented OpenOffice setting; do not substitute a similarly named command from another spreadsheet program. Official formula-display FAQ.

The native 4.1.17 setting is shown enabled for the diagnostic test. Clear it to restore results.
2. Repair a formula stored as text
If D2 still shows formula text, use a separate empty cell as a control. Ensure the control cell has a normal number format, type =3*8, and press Enter. If it displays 24, calculation itself is working.
- Select the affected cell and inspect the input line. Look for a leading apostrophe, a space before
=, or an entry that never began with=. - Open Format โ Cells โ Numbers. Choose Number with the General format instead of Text, then confirm.
- Re-enter the intended formula explicitly: type
=B2*C2and press Enter. Merely changing a number format is not the same as submitting a new formula for interpretation. - Confirm that the cell displays 24 and that the input line still contains
=B2*C2.
For this tiny example, retyping is safer than a whole-sheet replacement. For an important original formula, preserve a copy before replacing it, and check every reference in the repaired entry. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.16 Help: entering formulas.
Reproduce the two text-entry traps
In E2, type an apostrophe immediately followed by the formula: '=B2*C2. The apostrophe tells Calc to treat the following characters as text. It is not part of an executable formula. In F2, first set Format Cells โ Numbers โ Text, then enter =B2*C2.
Native 4.1.17: E2 was entered with an apostrophe; F2 was preformatted as Text. D2 remains a working calculation.
Repair each cell individually using the number-format-and-reentry steps above. Do not strip apostrophes from an entire workbook: they can intentionally preserve product codes and postal codes with leading zeros. Official formula-entry explanation and 4.1.16 Help: text formatting.
Verify the repair and handle other symptoms
Change B2 from 3 to 4. Each repaired total should become 32. Restore B2 to 3 when finished. This checks that the result is a live calculation rather than a manually entered 24.
Native 4.1.17: after explicit formula reentry, all three results respond to the quantity change. F2โs input line shows the live formula.
In the native test, saving as .ods, closing and reopening preserved all three formulas. Changing B2 to 3 after reopening returned 24 in each cell; restoring B2 to 4 returned 32. The saved test file ends with quantity 4.
- If the cell shows an error after reentry, the text-display problem may be fixed; diagnose the formula’s syntax or references separately.
- If the cell shows an old number rather than formula text, investigate recalculation separately. Do not rewrite valid formulas just to address a stale display.
- If only the input line shows the formula, no repair is needed.
- If a literal formula is an example in a training sheet, leave it as text intentionally.
For additional checks, ISTEXT distinguishes a stored text entry, while ISNUMBER checks whether a numeric result is a number. Put those checks in separate cells; do not overwrite the entry you are investigating.
Evidence and limits: Official documentation and versioned Help source were checked on October 16, 2026. Independently calculated results of 24 and 32 matched the native 4.1.17 test. Formula display was switched on and off; apostrophe and Text-format entries were repaired by confirming Number/General and explicitly re-entering the formula. The ODS close/reopen and fresh recalculation checks passed. Screenshots are genuine, unmodified application captures. This small synthetic test does not cover bulk replacement, imported workbooks, alternate file formats, every formula error or other platforms/locales.
