COUNT in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026: Count Numeric Cells
Count populated numeric entries without counting ordinary text or logical flags in SoftMaker PlanMaker.
Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer
COUNT returns the number of cells containing numbers in one or more specified ranges. It is not a total of the values, and it is not a count of all nonempty cells. For a four-cell column with 42, Test, TRUE and a genuinely empty cell, SoftMaker documents =COUNT(A1:A4) returning 1. PlanMaker 2026 COUNT manual.
COUNT is useful for checking how many measurements were entered, whether an imported data batch contains the expected number of numeric readings, or how many values in separate columns are numeric.
Exact syntax
=COUNT(Range1 [, Range2, Range3 ...])
| Argument | Requirement | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Range1 |
Required | A referenced cell range to inspect. |
Range2, Range3, … |
Optional | Additional ranges; the counts are combined. Square brackets in the syntax indicate optional arguments and are not typed into a formula. |
PlanMaker’s manual explicitly includes dates and text representing numbers in its description of number cells, although its example distinguishes ordinary text and TRUE. How a particular imported numeric-looking text string is interpreted depends on its actual stored type and is a native-verification item, not grounds to invent a special coercion rule. The formulas here use unambiguous numeric entries.
Commas shown in these English-language formulas separate arguments; the separator may differ under your installed locale. COUNT’s argument ranges have no sorting-order requirement. Official COUNT arguments.
Reproduce a mixed worksheet
Create these exact cell values in A2:A9 (leave rows 5 and 9 completely empty, without a formula):
| Row | A: Entry | Stored as |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 12 |
Number |
| 3 | pending |
Text |
| 4 | TRUE |
Logical value |
| 5 | (leave empty) | Empty |
| 6 | 0 |
Number |
| 7 | -3 |
Number |
| 8 | N/A |
Text, typed without an equals sign |
| 9 | (leave empty) | Empty |
In C2 enter:
=COUNT(A2:A9)
Expected result: 3. Numeric cells are A2, A6 and A7. TRUE, pending and N/A are not numeric data; the two blank cells are excluded. A zero does count as a number. This count was independently checked from the listed inputs, not produced by running PlanMaker.
Advanced: audit two disjoint measurement blocks
In B2:B5 enter 5, leave B3 empty, enter text hold in B4, and enter 17 in B5. These are separate from the values above. Now use:
=COUNT(A2:A9,B2:B5)
Expected result: 5 (three numeric cells in A2:A9 plus B2 and B5). The formula demonstrates the official optional second-range argument. If you accidentally omit B2:B5, the result goes back to 3. Avoid overlapping ranges if your intention is to count unique cells across a union; the manual describes combining range counts, not deduplicating overlapping references.
For a records-completeness audit, compare the COUNT answer with the planned numeric-sample count rather than relying solely on whether a row looks populated.
Common mistakes, limitations and troubleshooting
- Result is lower than the visible number of entries: COUNT deliberately ignores ordinary text and logical values. Compare the equivalent COUNTA definition to decide which question you need answered.
- Numeric-looking text: imported cells may not be typed as expected. Inspect their type or re-enter a controlled numeric sample before deciding COUNT is malfunctioning.
- Zeros and negative readings:
0and-3are both legitimate numbers and count as one cell each. COUNT is not counting only positive results. - Wrong range:
A2:A8omits the final planned record;A2:A9includes it, even if blank. Keep the range aligned with your data block. - Confusing COUNT and COUNTIF: COUNT merely checks for number content; COUNTIF tests a criterion such as
">0". - Unexpected errors: check that references are valid and separators match the locale. this guide does not assert particular error codes for malformed formulas because native error testing was unavailable.
- Formula-generated empty text: whether a cell displaying
""counts as blank in a given release is not established by the cited COUNT page. Test this special case separately; do not use the displayed sample counts to infer its behaviour.
PlanMaker version and cross-software compatibility
The official 2021, 2024 and 2026 PlanMaker manuals all show COUNT(Range1 [, Range2, Range3 ...]), including the 42, Test, TRUE, blank example returning 1. These documents verify historical presence in those releases, not the first-supported version or behaviour in every Free, NX, desktop or mobile edition. No change of argument order is documented in the checked pages.
Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheets also use COUNT for numeric-cell counting. However, the handling of dates, stored numeric text, blank-string formulas and import conversions may vary; these exact differences were not established by cross-app native tests here.
