SINH in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026: hyperbolic sine, syntax and worksheet examples

Math Intermediate SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026

PlanMaker SINH explained with reproducible formulas, hyperbolic identities, engineering examples, input limits and compatibility cautions.

Verification status: Official documentation referenced; example outcomes independently reasoned or arithmetically checked where stated. Not executed in SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =SINH(Number) returns the hyperbolic sine of a numeric value, not the ordinary sine of an angle. The official SoftMaker PlanMaker 2026 example is SINH(0.45), which it displays as 0.4653. An independently computed, more precise expected value is 0.465342016934. These figures are mathematical expectations, not the results of a formula executed in PlanMaker. PlanMaker 2026 SINH documentation, checked 2026-10-13.

Purpose and mathematical interpretation

For a real number x, the hyperbolic sine is defined as sinh(x) = (e^x - e^(-x))/2. Unlike the ordinary trigonometric function SIN, it is not based on an angle on the unit circle. It is a smooth, increasing, odd function: SINH(-x) = -SINH(x). Its value is zero at x = 0, positive for positive x, and negative for negative x. These are mathematical properties; they do not describe undocumented internal PlanMaker implementation. SoftMaker’s SINH reference establishes the worksheet function’s name and purpose. The related COSH reference documents the hyperbolic cosine.

Common uses include checking exponential relationships, evaluating the hyperbolic-sine component of engineering equations, and constructing nonlinear worksheets with a known mathematical model. Do not substitute SINH for SIN when working with degrees or radians: =SINH(1) has an expected value of about 1.175201193644, whereas ordinary SIN(1) has a different result.

Exact syntax and arguments

=SINH(Number)
Argument Required? Expected input Behaviour
Number Yes One real numeric value or a cell reference/formula evaluating to one The input at which to calculate the hyperbolic sine. No optional second argument or default is documented.

The English PlanMaker 2026 and 2024 manuals both show SINH(Number) with one argument. Because SINH is unary, no function-argument separator is needed in these examples. A decimal-point example such as 0.45 follows the English documentation; decimal commas, localized function names, coercion of numeric text and formula separators depend on installation settings and are not asserted to work identically in every locale. Reproducible example: sample values

Enter the following numbers in A2:A7, and in B2 enter =SINH(A2); copy B2 down to B7. Format column B with enough decimal places for comparison.

Cell Enter in column A Formula in B Independently predicted B result
Row 2 0 =SINH(A2) 0
Row 3 0.1 =SINH(A3) 0.100166750020
Row 4 0.45 =SINH(A4) 0.465342016934
Row 5 1 =SINH(A5) 1.175201193644
Row 6 -1 =SINH(A6) -1.175201193644
Row 7 2 =SINH(A7) 3.626860407847

Results may display fewer digits because of cell formatting or floating-point rounding. These values were independently generated using Python’s math.sinh, not from native PlanMaker execution. In particular, the function is not constrained to outputs between −1 and 1; that bound belongs to TANH, not SINH.

Reproducible example: use a changing input cell

Put 0.45 in D2 and enter =SINH(D2) in E2. The expected E2 value is approximately 0.465342016934. Change D2 to -0.45: E2 should change sign to about −0.465342016934. This provides a simple sign-symmetry sanity check without creating multiple separate formulas.

Worked advanced examples

1. Verify the odd-function identity

With any real input in A2, enter =SINH(A2)+SINH(-A2) in B2. Mathematically, B2 should be 0. Floating-point results may differ from exact zero by a tiny amount; display sufficient decimals if investigating an apparent mismatch. With A2 = 0.45, the two terms are approximately 0.465342016934 and -0.465342016934.

2. Compare two independent hyperbolic formulas

With A2 = 0.45, enter =SINH(A2) in B2. Independently, the mathematical identity predicts that =(EXP(A2)-EXP(-A2))/2 should equal the same value, roughly 0.465342016934. This is an educational cross-check, not evidence about how PlanMaker implements SINH internally. The PlanMaker 2026 EXP reference describes exponentiation by e. Note that manual exponential expressions can overflow or lose precision for sufficiently large input magnitudes even when a built-in hyperbolic implementation might behave differently. Do not infer PlanMaker’s exact thresholds without application testing.

3. Check the fundamental hyperbolic identity

With A2 = 0.45, type =COSH(A2)^2-SINH(A2)^2 in B2. The mathematical result is 1. This compares two separately documented PlanMaker functions. Because of floating-point rounding, it is safer to check with a tolerance such as =ABS(B2-1)<0.00000001 than require exact bit-for-bit equality. PlanMaker COSH · PlanMaker SINH. Independent math verification is not native formula execution.

4. Transform a positive growth factor

Enter 2 in A2 and compute =SINH(LN(A2)) in B2. The expected result is exactly 0.75 mathematically because sinh(ln 2) = (2-1/2)/2. Enter =SINH(LN(0.5)) to obtain the independently expected value −0.75. Both calculations require a positive input to LN; this is a mathematical transformation, not a recommended business metric without a defined model. See the official LN documentation.

5. Example from a documented Excel formula — not a PlanMaker test

The Microsoft Excel SINH reference shows a probability-model illustration. Its formula =2.868*SINH(0.0342*1.03) has an independently predicted result of approximately 0.1010490631. This confirms the arithmetic identity; it does not establish that PlanMaker’s implementation, locale parsing or workbook exchange was tested. The empirical probability model belongs to that specific illustrative example and must not be generalized. Microsoft Excel SINH documentation, checked 2026-10-13.

Errors, limits and troubleshooting

Observation What to check Recommended action
Unexpectedly large positive/negative output SINH is unbounded and grows rapidly in magnitude Verify that you intended SINH rather than SIN or bounded TANH; check the input’s unit and sign.
Formula treated as text Missing = at the start, a text-formatted cell, or a pasted apostrophe Re-enter as =SINH(A2) in a general/number cell and check calculation settings.
Error after typing text instead of a number SoftMaker’s brief reference does not specify coercion for arbitrary text or its precise error code Check the referenced cell using a genuinely numeric value; do not rely on the same conversion behaviour as Excel.
Rounded display seems inconsistent Number formatting hides digits Increase displayed decimal places and distinguish displayed precision from internal calculation.
Unexpected result with SINH(90) Hyperbolic functions do not take ordinary degree-angle input Use SIN for ordinary trigonometric angles, with degrees converted to radians if needed.
Overflow, extreme-value error or apparent saturation Exponentials grow quickly; exact runtime limits were not verified Test with smaller magnitudes; use an analytically stable reformulation where applicable; record your PlanMaker build/platform before claiming a numeric threshold.
Unexpected result with numeric text or locale decimals Formula parsing and coercion may be localized Test a numeric cell reference and the installed language/region; the English examples are not a locale guarantee.

Argument limits: The official PlanMaker page specifies one Number argument, but does not publish a precise numeric overflow cutoff, text-coercion rule, platform-specific error display, or treatment of nonfinite inputs. This review therefore avoids assigning unverified error codes such as #VALUE! or #NUM!. SoftMaker SINH documentation.
