Opening a workbook in a second spreadsheet application is not the same as guaranteeing identical formula behavior. The file may open successfully while a function name, argument mode, range reference, wildcard rule or array result behaves differently.
First locate what changed
| What you see | First check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
#NAME? or a function-name error |
Function name and installed software version | An application might not recognize that name or newer function |
| A formula is rejected when pasted | Local argument separator and quote characters | ; and , are not interchangeable in every environment |
| A lookup returns a different row | Match mode and sorted-range assumptions | Exact versus approximate search can change the answer |
| A formula opens but produces only one value | Array/spill support in that release | Dynamic-array behavior differs between programs |
| A text extraction changes | Regex dialect, wildcard modes and function arguments | Similar names do not establish equivalent behavior |
| Numbers or dates change before the formula runs | CSV import types and regional interpretation | The problem can be the input data, not the formula |
Example: a semicolon-separated Calc formula
In a standard LibreOffice Calc setup, this is a valid form of an IF expression:
=IF(A2>0;"Positive";"Not positive")
If A2 contains numeric 3, the expected text is Positive. If A2 contains numeric -2, the expected text is Not positive. Do not assume the formula can be pasted verbatim into every other spreadsheet. Use your installed program’s documented syntax and separator configuration.
Three differences that deserve an explicit review
1. Match defaults can silently change results
A VLOOKUP search using sorted/approximate mode can return a different row than exact-match mode. LibreOffice documents exact matching with its final argument set to false or zero. Zoho’s MATCH function documents multiple match types, including modes involving regular expressions; these aren’t interchangeable flags.
Learn more in Why lookups return no match and the formula migration helper.
2. Text extraction functions are not universal
LibreOffice Calc documents REGEX(Text; Expression; ...) for extraction and optional replacement. Zoho Sheet documents REGEXEXTRACT(text; expression; ...) with different arguments. Moving from one to the other is a translation task, not a simple rename. See the text extraction decision guide.
3. Error handlers hide more than one problem
IFERROR typically catches many error classes while IFNA is intended for not-available results. Adding IFERROR(...;"") to every formula can hide an invalid reference or a divide-by-zero mistake. Investigate the actual error before applying a user-friendly fallback. ONLYOFFICE’s IFERROR reference explicitly describes the error classes it intercepts.
Safe migration workflow
- Keep a copy of the original workbook in its source format.
- Record the source and destination programs and their versions.
- Select 3–5 test cells: ordinary value, blank input, no match, duplicate key and error case.
- Verify the target function’s documented parameters and data types. Do not infer support from a similar function name.
- Reproduce the small examples and reconcile outputs before applying the formula to the full workbook.
- Check whether saving back to the original file format changes formulas or array results.
- Preserve an original and final workbook for comparison and audit.
