WPS #VALUE!: Separate Labels from Numeric Inputs
Scope: WPS Spreadsheet, English official Academy documentation checked October 21, 2026. The source does not specify a numeric build or guarantee identical Windows, macOS, Linux, web and mobile behavior. These are core formula exercises, not premium-feature instructions. No WPS execution or screenshot was performed. Expected results combine documented error rules with independently checked arithmetic; they are not native test observations. Use a disposable workbook.
Inspect the argument’s meaning
WPS Academy’s error reference explains #VALUE! using text that is unsuitable for a numeric calculation. Begin by checking what each input actually represents. A label such as “pending” is not a quantity, even if it appears in a mostly numeric column.
Do not assume every imported string should be turned into a number. Product codes, account identifiers and missing-data labels may intentionally be text. An indiscriminate conversion can remove meaningful leading zeros or change a missing value into a real zero.
Separate a quantity from its status
In a disposable sheet enter the text pending in A2 and the number 7 in B2. Enter =A2*B2 in C2. A2 is deliberately not numeric, so this is an expected #VALUE! case under the documented rule. It avoids relying on whether a particular build automatically converts a string consisting only of digits.
For this exercise the source record is now verified: the quantity is 6. Preserve the status text in D2, label that column Status, and replace A2 with the numeric value 6. C2 should calculate 42. Change A2 to 8 and expect 56. Set A2 to 0 and expect 0 only when the record genuinely says the quantity is zero.
If the source still says pending, there is no authorized numeric repair yet. Retain the exception or a clearly labelled missing-data state. Do not insert zero solely because it allows multiplication to finish.
Imported numeric text needs a known convention
A text value such as 1,234 may mean different quantities under different regional conventions. Formatting a cell as Number does not decide the source convention. Keep the original input and verify its meaning before parsing it.
For an explicitly identified decimal and grouping convention, consult the site’s NUMBERVALUE reference. That guide documents WPS Windows Personal scope and its own examples; it is not proof of identical behavior in every WPS platform. This page’s main exercise uses integers and no function argument separators.
After a repair, check a normal row, a zero row and an intentionally unresolved row. Do not use WPS Academy’s bulk clear-errors operation as a substitute for diagnosis: deleting the formula removes evidence rather than validating the input. For dates, imported numbers or formulas that are valid but wrong, continue with input validation within that guide’s stated scope.
