CELL in WPS Spreadsheet: Inspect an Explicit Cell Reference

Information Intermediate WPS Spreadsheet

Use documented CELL row, column and contents modes in WPS, and treat file-path output as environment-dependent.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

Quick answer: =CELL("row",B3) asks for B3’s row number, independently expected to be 3. Give CELL an explicit reference so its target is unambiguous.

Availability and evidence scope

The official WPS CELL lesson documents the behavior used here. It identifies WPS Office for Windows Personal. Reviewed October 19, 2026, this Chinese-language evidence does not establish an exact introduction build, every current edition, or English-global, Mac, Linux, web or mobile behavior. No new WPS execution or native screenshot was possible; the examples are independent controls or explicitly conditional fixtures.

Syntax and arguments

=CELL(info_type,reference)
  • info_type: a quoted text selector, such as “row”, “col”, “contents” or “filename”.
  • reference: the cell whose information is requested. Use a single cell in these examples.

The official image table was visually checked for these modes. It defines row and column numbers, contents as the value rather than the formula, and filename as a file name with full path. The article says omitted references use a changing contextual cell; this guide always supplies the reference and makes no active-cell assumption.

Example 1: separate position from value

Create this small sheet:

Cell Entry
B3 42
B4 =B3*2

Use separate result cells in column D:

Formula Independently expected result Reason
=CELL(“row”,B3) 3 B3 lies on row 3
=CELL(“col”,B3) 2 B is the second column
=CELL(“contents”,B3) 42 B3 contains the number 42
=CELL(“contents”,B4) 84 B4’s evaluated value is 42 × 2

The last formula requests 84, not the formula text =B3*2. This is useful in a workbook diagnostic area: position and current value answer different questions. Do not use contents mode when the goal is to document the formula itself.

These outputs are derived from explicit coordinates and arithmetic, not captured from a target WPS installation.

Example 2: a conditional workbook-path check

In a workbook you have already saved, enter =CELL("filename",B3) in a separate cell. The official lesson demonstrates filename mode for retrieving file-path information.

A conditional fixture could name a fictitious workbook C:\Training\Inventory.xlsx. If that is the workbook containing the referenced cell, the result should identify that file and path according to the installed WPS implementation. This guide intentionally does not invent the exact returned string, workbook/sheet delimiters, or a path observed on our machine.

Check the reported identity against the workbook actually open before including it in an audit footer. This mode concerns the referenced file; it should not be substituted for a general current-directory query. See INFO for that separate environment question.

Environment and privacy considerations

A path may reveal a user name, client name or project location. Review it before exporting a workbook or posting a support screenshot. A diagnostic formula is not a reason to disclose a real private path in sample documentation.

The image table includes an unsaved-workbook statement, but this guide does not claim an observed unsaved result in any current build. Save a disposable training workbook and verify the intended workflow rather than relying on an untested empty-string assumption.

Troubleshooting and boundaries

  • Quote selectors: use “row”, not a bare word interpreted as a name.
  • Keep the reference explicit when comparing results across cells or workbooks.
  • For a multi-cell reference, the source describes the top-left cell; these examples avoid ambiguity by using one cell.
  • Format-related modes need their own checks. The source says custom-format changes may require recalculation; no exhaustive format-code mapping is reproduced here.
  • Use ROW when only a row number is needed, and COLUMN for the corresponding column task.
  • Exact filename formatting, protected-cell behavior and locale-specific output remain separate verification contracts.

References and verification

Expected outputs are derived from the explicit fixtures and documented operation. They are not results observed in an installed WPS build. Check the intended edition before relying on these formulas in a shared workbook.
