EVALUATE in WPS Spreadsheet: Calculate Trusted Arithmetic Stored as Text
Evaluate simple arithmetic text in WPS, preserve source expressions and check results against explicit worksheet formulas.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer
If A2 contains the text 678*55+999, =EVALUATE(A2) has the independently expected result 38289. The WPS lesson demonstrates EVALUATE directly in a worksheet cell, with the expression taken from another cell.
Syntax and input
EVALUATE(formula_text)
The single argument supplies a text expression to evaluate. No optional argument or default is shown. This guide confines its examples to arithmetic you wrote and checked yourself. It makes no claim about macro-sheet restrictions, external execution, compatibility with another spreadsheet product, or security guarantees.
Worked worksheet: retain the calculation alongside the answer
Enter Expression in A1 and Result in B1. Enter the following expression text in column A without a leading equals sign, then enter =EVALUATE(A2) in B2 and fill down through B4.
| Cell | Expression text | Independently expected result |
|---|---|---|
| A2 | 678*55+999 | 38289 |
| A3 | (12+8)*3 | 60 |
| A4 | 1003020+40^2 | 61600 |
The input cells hold text; B2:B4 hold formulas. Keep that distinction visible when reviewing a workbook. If an import has already evaluated the expression or converted it into another data type, restore a text input before using this workflow.
Check the first row manually: 678 × 55 = 37290, then add 999. For A3, the parentheses make the sum 20 before multiplication. For A4, the product is 60000 and the square is 1600. These calculations supply independent checks rather than a second invocation of the same function.
Advanced check: compare a stored expression with an explicit formula
Put 12+8*3 in A6 and (12+8)*3 in A7. Enter =EVALUATE(A6) in B6 and =EVALUATE(A7) in B7. Expected results are 36 and 60. In C6 enter the ordinary worksheet formula =12+8*3; in C7 enter =(12+8)*3. The matching expectations demonstrate why grouping must be preserved when assembling expression text.
Use a separate review column for the intended calculation. Do not silently remove punctuation or reorder terms to make a malformed expression evaluate. For recurring structured calculations, ordinary formulas referencing numeric input cells are easier to audit than increasingly complicated text expressions.
Troubleshooting and boundaries
- An arithmetic expression entered with a leading equals sign is ordinarily a worksheet formula, not the stored expression text used here.
- Check parentheses, multiplication signs and the referenced input cell. The examples use
*for multiplication and^for exponentiation. - A cell reference used as the EVALUATE argument, such as A2, is distinct from embedding references inside the expression text. The examples verify the former; reference resolution inside arbitrary expressions is outside this guide’s documented scope.
- The reviewed WPS lesson does not specify error labels for malformed expressions, maximum text length, localization, recalculation dependencies or supported non-arithmetic expressions. No exact behavior is asserted for those cases.
- Do not use this tutorial as a reason to evaluate unreviewed text from an external file or another person. Use known arithmetic inputs and preserve the original source for inspection.
A correct arithmetic result cannot establish whether the expression represents the intended business calculation. Check the meaning and units separately. See FORMULATEXT to inspect an ordinary worksheet formula as text, and ISNUMBER to check whether a cell contains a numeric value. Neither check establishes that arbitrary expression text is safe to evaluate.
Availability and verification
The official WPS EVALUATE lesson was checked on October 19, 2026. Its edition banner identifies WPS Office for Windows Personal. It does not establish an exact minimum build, English-global availability or support on Mac, Linux, web and mobile. The calculations above are independent expected results, not observed WPS outputs. Native execution and genuine current-application screenshots remain unverified.
