FIXED: Rounded Text with Explicit Decimal Places in WPS Spreadsheet
Use FIXED to create rounded text, distinguish it from numeric formatting, and understand decimal positions, grouping defaults and locale-dependent punctuation.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
FIXED rounds a number to a specified decimal position and returns text. This is different from changing a numeric cell’s display format: a cell formatted to show two decimals can still retain its underlying numeric value, whereas FIXED constructs a text result.
Syntax, defaults and punctuation
=FIXED(number, [decimals], [no_commas])
Number is the value to round. Decimals controls places to the right of the decimal point; a negative value rounds to the left. The lesson states that omitted decimals default to two. No_commas is a logical flag: TRUE suppresses grouping commas; FALSE or omission permits grouping.
The lesson describes period-and-comma formatting. The original examples explicitly set TRUE and use that historical lesson’s decimal-point convention. Exact punctuation across every WPS locale is not established. “Text result” is a data-type distinction, not a statement that all regional environments produce the same string.
Worked positive-number controls
All inputs are ordinary positive values away from midpoint ambiguity. Quotation marks in the result discussion indicate text; they are not characters to add to the output.
| Formula | Independently expected result |
|---|---|
=FIXED(1234.567,2,TRUE) |
1234.57 |
=FIXED(12.34,1,TRUE) |
12.3 |
=FIXED(12.36,1,TRUE) |
12.4 |
=FIXED(12,2,TRUE) |
12.00 |
=FIXED(1234,-2,TRUE) |
1200 |
=FIXED(87.2,0,TRUE) |
87 |
For 1234.567 at two decimal places, rounding gives text 1234.57 in the stated punctuation convention. For 12 at two places, the expected text is 12.00, preserving the requested decimal places. With decimals −2, 1234 rounds to the nearest hundred, giving text 1200.
Practical case: presentation without changing the source
Put numeric 12.36 in A2 and enter =FIXED(A2,1,TRUE) in B2. The independent expected text is 12.4. Keep A2 as the numeric source for further arithmetic and use B2 where the rounded text representation is needed.
A later calculation that uses the original 12.36 differs from one that intentionally uses the rounded quantity 12.4. Decide which policy the model needs. Do not assume that exporting the formatted text preserves the same arithmetic behavior as exporting the original numeric cell.
If a report needs a numeric rounded value, a numeric-rounding function or a display-format decision may be more appropriate. FIXED’s documented purpose includes conversion to text, so merely removing grouping commas does not turn its result back into a number.
Defaults versus explicit controls
The two-place default and grouping default are documented, but the table keeps every argument explicit. That makes the intended result easier to audit and avoids treating a locale-dependent grouping example as a universal literal string. The no_commas flag does not mean “do not round”; it affects grouping in the text representation.
Errors and limitations
The lesson does not give a complete error table for nonnumeric inputs, extreme decimal counts or invalid logical flags. It also does not settle every negative-number or floating midpoint case. These examples therefore do not import another application’s sign or precision rules.
Be careful with a text value that looks numeric. Sorting, aggregation and export can depend on the receiving operation’s treatment of text. No coercion or downstream conversion is assumed here, and the punctuation shown is limited to the cited lesson context.
Availability and evidence
The official WPS lesson is dated 2019-06-11 and explicitly labels its applicability WPS Office for Windows Personal. It does not identify a numeric release. This establishes documentation by that date, not the function’s original introduction or its last working version. Current build limits and equivalence across WPS clients remain unverified. The available evidence does not establish retirement or formal deprecation.
