MINIFS in WPS Spreadsheet: Find the Smallest Value Meeting Conditions
Find the minimum in matching rows with aligned criteria ranges, explicit thresholds and auditable positive-number examples.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: =MINIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North") selects values in C for rows labelled North in A, then returns their minimum. In the example below, the independent expected result is 80. With additional conditions, a row must meet all of them.
Syntax, required inputs and optional pairs
=MINIFS(min_range,criteria_range1,criteria1,[criteria_range2,criteria2],...)
min_range contains the values to compare. criteria_range1 contains the cells to test, and criteria1 specifies the condition. These three arguments are required. Extra conditions are optional range/criterion pairs; no criterion is silently supplied when they are omitted. The official lesson describes up to 126 additional range/criterion pairs. That is a documentation limit, not a current-build stress test.
Criteria can be numbers, expressions or text. Write a text criterion in quotes, or refer to a cell containing it. Keep every criteria range the same size and shape as the value range, with each relative position referring to the same record.
Example: lowest North amount
Enter A1:C6:
| Row | A: Region | B: Status | C: Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Region | Status | Amount |
| 2 | North | Open | 120 |
| 3 | South | Open | 70 |
| 4 | North | Closed | 80 |
| 5 | North | Open | 150 |
| 6 | South | Closed | 200 |
In E2 enter =MINIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North"). Independent expectation: 80, the minimum of 120, 80 and 150. The smaller South value 70 does not qualify.
In E3 enter =MINIFS(C2:C6,A2:A6,"North",B2:B6,"Open"). Independent expectation: 120, comparing only rows 2 and 5. This is an AND combination, not a request for either North or Open.
Advanced example: make the threshold editable
Put North in G2, Open in H2 and 130 in I2. In J2 enter:
=MINIFS($C$2:$C$6,$A$2:$A$6,G2,$B$2:$B$6,H2,$C$2:$C$6,">="&I2)
Independent expected J2: 150. Rows must be North, Open and at least 130. The third criterion tests the amount range itself. The comparison operator is quoted text joined to the numeric threshold; do not write ">=I2", which contains the characters I2 rather than the cell’s value.
Change only I2 to 100; expected J2 becomes 120. Absolute source ranges keep the dataset fixed if you copy the summary formula. Relative criteria references let successive summary rows use their own selectors. SUMIFS provides a related multi-condition aggregation when you need a total instead of the smallest observation.
Errors and data-quality checks
The WPS lesson documents #VALUE! for differing range sizes or shapes. Compare both ends of every reference: C2:C6 paired with A2:A5 is invalid, and equal cell counts in differently shaped blocks do not meet the stated requirement.
These controls deliberately use positive numeric amounts and guaranteed matches. The reviewed evidence does not establish exact no-match, blank, wildcard-escape or text-number coercion behavior. Do not interpret an unexpected zero as a genuine qualifying amount until you inspect the matching records. Adding a fallback with IF is useful only after you have separately verified the existence of a match; it should not mask a broken range.
A minimum is an extremum, not a total or average. Duplicate qualifying values do not change it, and one unusually low observation can dominate the result. Keep record identifiers available for investigating the selected amount rather than assuming this function returns the identity of its row.
Availability, version history and evidence
The official WPS MINIFS lesson was published 2019-06-19 and labels its applicable edition WPS Office for Windows Personal. The lesson was checked on October 19, 2026. This establishes a documented-by date, not the release in which the function first appeared. No numeric build, last supported version or retirement date is established. Mac, Linux, web, mobile and global-English edition parity are unverified.
Original expected results here are independent calculations or explicitly labelled test expectations, not native WPS execution. No WPS screenshot or installed-build test is claimed. Formula separators and displayed decimal precision can depend on the target setup; verify the exact function name in that installation before distributing a workbook.
