MINUTE in WPS Spreadsheet: Extract Minute Components and Calculate Total Minutes
Understand WPS MINUTE’s 0–59 component, avoid duration wrap, and compare explicit minute bands with complete elapsed totals.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer: MINUTE(serial_number) returns the minute component from 0 through 59. It does not count all minutes in a duration longer than an hour. Multiply a complete day-valued difference by 1440 when you need total elapsed minutes.
Availability and version history
- Introduced: documented by 2019-05-22 in the official WPS lesson; original introduction is not established.
- Availability: WPS Office for Windows Personal; the lesson metadata gives no numeric release.
- Scope: exact current supported builds remain unverified; the historical Windows lesson does not establish all WPS clients.
- Checked: October 14, 2026 against complete function-specific documentation. Examples are independent expectations; no native WPS test was performed.
Syntax and output format
=MINUTE(serial_number)
The dated WPS definition accepts time values represented by numeric fractions, recognized time text or other formulas. The examples use TIME and DATE constructions to make the underlying inputs explicit. Comma separators are shown; adapt them to the workbook locale.
Display MINUTE results as ordinary numbers. These are independently calculated controls, not native WPS executions. Rounding or truncation of subsecond values near a minute boundary is outside their scope.
Example 1: extract a minute without changing the hour
=MINUTE(TIME(18,45,30))
=MINUTE(0.78125)
=MINUTE(TIME(2,5,0))
Expected outputs are 45, 45 and 5. The fraction 0.78125 represents the documented 18:45 input. None of these outputs is the number of minutes since midnight.
For the first time, total minutes since midnight are 1125.5, computed from 18×60 + 45 + 30/60. MINUTE’s 45 deliberately leaves out both the hours and the fractional minute.
Example 2: compare a component with a 95-minute interval
Put =TIME(9,10,0) in A2 and =TIME(10,45,0) in B2:
=MINUTE(B2-A2)
=(B2-A2)*1440
Expected outputs are 35 and 95. The first is the minute field of 01:35, while the second is total elapsed minutes. A 60-minute interval is an especially useful control: its minute component is 0, but its total is 60.
The source’s bicycle-duration walkthrough uses MINUTE(end−start). Its claim needs this component limitation; a trip exceeding one hour can be seriously understated if 35 is reported as the whole duration.
Advanced example: retain days and seconds
Create start A5 with =DATE(2026,10,14)+TIME(8,0,0) and end B5 with =DATE(2026,10,15)+TIME(10,45,30):
=MINUTE(B5-A5)
=(B5-A5)*1440
The interval is 26 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds. Expected results are 45 and 1605.5 minutes. Keep the total numeric and label its unit. A normal time display may hide complete days or seconds.
If the policy requires complete elapsed minutes for this nonnegative interval, =INT((B5-A5)*1440) gives 1605. That explicitly chosen truncation is separate from MINUTE’s component extraction.
Advanced example: classify a within-hour window
Suppose a recurring maintenance window covers minutes 15 through 29 of every hour. For a valid time in D2:
=AND(MINUTE(D2)>=15,MINUTE(D2)<30)
The controls 08:14:59, 08:15:00, 08:29:59 and 08:30:00 produce FALSE, TRUE, TRUE and FALSE. A time of 19:20:00 also produces TRUE: this rule intentionally ignores the hour.
If the window is only 08:15–08:30, add the required hour or compare complete time values. Decide whether the window repeats before choosing a component test.
Limits and related guides
The captured source does not settle invalid-input errors, negative serials, all blank/Boolean coercions or fractional-second boundary behavior. Do not infer those from another application.
Use HOUR and SECOND for their respective fields, TIMEVALUE for recognized text, and TIME for numeric components. Total-duration arithmetic should keep the original full values and their date context.
