ROWS: Count a Range’s Height in WPS Spreadsheet

Lookup and Reference Intermediate WPS Spreadsheet

Measure rectangular range height with ROWS, including inclusive endpoints, header exclusions and the difference between capacity and completed records.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

ROWS returns the height of a range or array, measured in rows. It describes the shape of the supplied object, rather than how many cells contain numbers or how many records are complete. A range five rows high remains five rows high even when it has several columns.

Syntax and required input

=ROWS(array)

The official lesson allows an array, an array formula or a cell-range reference. The argument is required in the documented syntax. This is different from ROW, whose omitted argument refers to the formula cell. Here the examples use ordinary contiguous rectangular references, so their geometry is explicit.

Count the endpoints inclusively

No particular cell contents are needed for the following controls. Enter the formulas outside their referenced ranges.

Formula Independently expected result
=ROWS(C2:G8) 7
=ROWS(C2:G2) 1
=ROWS(AA3:AC5) 3
=ROWS(B9) 1
=ROWS($B$2:B6) 5
=ROWS(B2:D6)*3 15

C2:G8 covers rows 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8: seven rows. Its five columns do not change the ROWS result. C2:G2 is a single row despite covering five columns. AA3:AC5 is three rows because 5−3+1=3.

The final expression multiplies the height of B2:D6, which is 5, by its known width of 3. The result is 15 grid positions, not a count of nonempty or numeric entries.

Practical case: check an input block’s capacity

Suppose an attendance template reserves A2:D31. Its 30 rows can accommodate 30 records if the design uses exactly one row per record. =ROWS(A2:D31) therefore measures capacity. It does not prove that 30 people attended or that all 30 records were filled in.

Including row 1 would count a header as another row. Use A2:D31 rather than A1:D31 when the intended measure excludes the header. Conversely, if a design requires a header-inclusive height, include it intentionally and document that choice. This makes the off-by-one decision visible instead of hiding it in a correction after the fact.

For a range whose final row is 31 and first row is 2, the independently calculated height is 31−2+1=30. The same rule applies to a one-row range: equal endpoints still give one, not zero.

Limits and troubleshooting

ROWS and ROW answer different questions. ROW identifies a worksheet position; ROWS measures a supplied object’s height. Neither automatically validates whether the contents form complete records. Use a suitable value-counting function when the question concerns populated or numeric cells.

The lesson does not establish behavior for discontiguous unions, three-dimensional references, dynamic spills or changing filtered views. These examples remain within rectangular reference geometry. Array support in a syntax description is not evidence of a particular modern UI workflow.

Supply a valid argument and inspect the endpoints. A range extended into unused template rows may produce a perfectly valid but unwanted height. The source does not list exact error tokens for malformed references or unsupported array expressions, so this guide does not substitute another application’s error behavior. Dollar signs affect copying rather than the dimensions of the original reference.

Availability and evidence

The official WPS lesson is dated 2019-05-28 and explicitly labels its applicability WPS Office for Windows Personal. It does not identify a numeric release. This establishes documentation by that date, not the function’s original introduction or its last working version. Current build limits and equivalence across WPS clients remain unverified. The available evidence does not establish retirement or formal deprecation.

Checked October 18, 2026. The examples in this guide are original, independently calculated controls based on the lesson. They have not been run in WPS or another spreadsheet application. No screenshot or execution result is claimed.
