RRI in WPS Spreadsheet: Find an Equivalent Growth Rate
Calculate a constant equivalent per-period rate from starting and ending values and verify the reconstructed endpoint.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
Quick answer
=RRI(2,100,121) has the independently expected result 0.10, displayed as 10% with percentage formatting. It is the constant per-period rate that turns 100 into 121 over two compounding periods.
Syntax and inputs
RRI(nper, pv, fv)
Supply the total number of periods nper, the initial amount pv and the ending amount fv. No optional arguments or defaults are shown. The examples use positive periods and positive amounts. A period must have a consistent meaning: if nper counts years, the result is an equivalent annual rate; if it counts months, the result is per month.
Worked worksheet: two-period endpoint check
| Cell | Entry | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| B2 | 2 | Period count |
| B3 | 100 | Starting amount |
| B4 | 121 | Ending amount |
Enter =RRI(B2,B3,B4) in B6 and format B6 as a percentage. Expected result: 10%. The independent calculation is (121/100)^(1/2) − 1 = 0.10. In B7 enter =B3*(1+B6)^B2; its expected result is 121, reconstructing the supplied endpoint.
Do not divide the total gain of 21% by two and call 10.5% the equivalent compound rate. A rate of 10.5% compounds 100 to 122.1025 over two periods, which is a different endpoint.
Advanced check: equivalent rate for a varying schedule
Suppose a fictional amount grows from 1000 to 1320 over two periods. That endpoint could result from a first-period rate of 10% followed by 20%. =RRI(2,1000,1320) is independently expected to return approximately 0.1489125293, or 14.89125293% per period.
The reconstruction is 1000 × (1.1489125293)² ≈ 1320. The arithmetic mean of the two rates is 15%; using 15% in both periods produces 1322.5 instead. An equivalent rate summarizes endpoints under compounding; it does not describe the actual path, volatility or timing of the original rates.
As another control, =RRI(3,1000,1157.625) is expected to return 5%, because 1000 × 1.05³ = 1157.625. Keep full precision internally and round only the displayed rate when possible. Reconstructing with a manually rounded rate can produce a small endpoint mismatch.
Troubleshooting and limits
The WPS FAQ directs users with #VALUE! to inspect nonnumeric arguments, stray text and spaces. Use actual numeric cells rather than relying on their appearance. Check argument order and confirm that copied formulas still reference the intended period count and endpoints.
The reviewed documentation does not establish a complete contract for zero or negative periods, zero or negative amounts, or exact error labels at those boundaries. This guide does not assert such behavior. It also does not establish a universal maximum period count.
RRI’s endpoint model here contains no intervening deposits or withdrawals. If the balance changed because money was added or removed, the endpoint ratio alone does not isolate a return on the original amount. Likewise, fees, taxes and irregular dates need explicit treatment. The function provides an equivalent mathematical rate, not a recommendation or a measure of investment risk.

Availability and verification
The official Windows documentation was checked on October 19, 2026: introduction, entry and syntax guide, and troubleshooting FAQ. These pages carry a July 13, 2026 update date and describe this function as available without membership. That date is not an introduction date; the documentation does not identify an exact minimum build. This guide does not infer support in historical builds, other editions, or Mac, Linux, web and mobile apps. The examples are independently calculated expectations, not observed WPS outputs. Native execution and genuine application screenshots remain unverified.
