Zoho Sheet #VALUE!: Separate Numeric Inputs from Text Labels
#VALUE! indicates an argument whose data type is unsuitable for the calculation. Inspect the value actually passed to the function, not just the cell’s appearance. Zoho documents this distinction in its VALUE reference.
A controlled price conversion
Create a disposable worksheet. Put the text twelve in A2 and the number 3 in B2. In C2 enter =VALUE(A2). A word spelling out the price is not the numeric representation this function needs; the expected diagnosis is #VALUE!, rather than a price of zero.
After confirming from the source record that the intended price is twelve, replace A2 with the formula ="12" to make the replacement explicitly text. C2 should now return numeric 12. In D2 enter =C2*B2: the expected amount is 36, independently checked as 12 × 3. Change B2 to 4 and verify 48. Those tests check both the conversion and the downstream calculation.
This repair is justified only because the source price has been verified. If twelve is an unresolved import anomaly, leave the original record intact, flag it and obtain a correction. Do not assume every failed conversion should become 12, zero or blank.
Differentiate quantities from identifiers
A product identifier such as 0012 is not necessarily a number to calculate with. Converting it to 12 can destroy meaningful leading zeros even though VALUE succeeds. Keep identifiers as text and apply conversion only to fields whose data contract requires a quantity, price or other numeric measure. See CSV import and leading zeros.
For a price that appears numeric, test VALUE in a helper cell while retaining the original input. Investigate decimal separators, currency conventions and ambiguous dates before making a workbook-wide conversion. A successful conversion is not proof that the intended currency or date interpretation was preserved. The VALUE guide covers those parsing distinctions in detail.
Keep the failed input visible
An IFERROR wrapper can substitute another output without repairing the input. Zoho’s IFERROR documentation includes #VALUE! among the error types it handles. During diagnosis, keep the raw helper result alongside any reader-facing message; a missing price must not silently reduce an invoice total.
Scope and verification
Checked October 21, 2026 against Zoho Sheet’s rolling English-language web help. This guide does not establish mobile or offline desktop parity or a historical version cutoff. Expected arithmetic and conversion reasoning were independently checked, not executed in Zoho Sheet; no screenshot is claimed. The examples need no multi-argument separator. See ISERROR when building an explicit quality-control column.
