Zoho Sheet DATEVALUE Function: Date Text, Serials and Locale Controls
Convert documented date-text formats with anchored modern-date serial fixtures, leap-day checks and explicit ambiguity handling.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
DATEVALUE converts date text into a date-time serial number that can be formatted as a date. Conversion and display are separate operations: seeing an integer does not necessarily mean the conversion failed, and making text look like a date does not necessarily turn it into a calculated date value.
Availability and verification
The official DATEVALUE reference was retrieved October 15, 2026. The original introduction release and last functioning version are unknown from the checked sources; current web help does not establish mobile or offline-client parity.
No native Zoho Sheet session was executed. Serial-number controls are independently reconciled to the two explicit modern-date examples in the official reference. Date parsing remains dependent on the stated input format and applicable language/region context.
Syntax and input type
DATEVALUE(date_text)
The argument is text representing a date. Use quotes around a literal string, or refer to a cell that contains the intended text. If an import automatically converted the field already, inspect its stored type before assuming DATEVALUE is still the required step.
The official page shows both a month/day/year numeric string and an English month-name string. Those examples do not establish that every possible regional date representation is accepted in every workbook.
Reproduce the two fully visible source examples
The documented formulas are =DATEVALUE("2/13/2020"), with result 43874, and =DATEVALUE("3 August, 2020"), with result 44046.
Their difference is 172 days, matching the independent calendar interval from February 13 to August 3, 2020. This is a useful reconciliation between two published modern-date serials without assuming a complete historical serial-date system.
The reference’s third example concatenates unseen cell values and produces 44014. Because those source cells are not visible in the extracted example, this guide does not invent their contents or present that result as independently reconstructed.
Complete modern-date control table
In a context that recognizes the English month-name pattern illustrated by Zoho, enter these date texts in A2:A6 and use =DATEVALUE(A2) in B2, filling down:
| Text | Intended calendar date | Independent serial target |
|---|---|---|
| 13 February, 2020 | February 13, 2020 | 43874 |
| 14 February, 2020 | February 14, 2020 | 43875 |
| 29 February, 2020 | February 29, 2020 | 43890 |
| 1 March, 2020 | March 1, 2020 | 43891 |
| 3 August, 2020 | August 3, 2020 | 44046 |
The targets are obtained by adding independently counted whole days to the official February 13 anchor. They are not native observations. In particular, the leap-day row sits one day before March 1.
Example: retain text and converted values side by side
Keep the imported text in column A and the conversion in B. Use a third review column for the intended calendar date or import source’s format rule. This allows a surprising result to be traced back without overwriting the evidence.
The February 14 minus February 13 serial difference is 1. March 1 minus February 13 is 17, including February 29 in this leap year. These interval checks can reveal a bad parse that still produces a plausible-looking date.
Advanced: do not guess ambiguous numeric dates
The text 3/8/2020 could be intended as March 8 or August 3 under different source conventions. The independently anchored modern-date serial for March 8 is 43898, while August 3 is 44046, a difference of 148 days.
This comparison is not a claim that a particular Zoho setting chooses one interpretation. It shows the material consequence of guessing. Resolve the source format before conversion, or retain explicit month names in a context known to recognize them.
An input such as 2/13/2020 is less ambiguous about month/day order because 13 cannot be a month, but that does not establish a universal format policy for every other row in the import.
Advanced: separate numeric chronology from text sorting
Once the stated dates are correctly converted, the increasing serial targets 43874, 43875, 43890, 43891, 44046 preserve their chronological order. Sorting the original English strings alphabetically is a different operation and need not produce that order.
For a five-record import, retain a count of source rows and successful conversions separately. A blank or failed conversion should not silently become a date with serial zero just to keep a total row count unchanged.
Errors and limits
Zoho’s shared error table mentions missing quotes, invalid types and invalid references. It does not provide a complete DATEVALUE-specific matrix for impossible dates, empty strings, two-digit years, time-only strings or text with time zones. Those native cases remain unverified.
This guide also does not infer behavior around historical 1900 calendar anomalies, negative serials or serial-system interoperability from two 2020 examples. Keep date-only modern controls separate from those questions.
If the output appears as an integer, apply the intended date display format only after confirming the parsed value. If it appears as the wrong date, examine the input convention and stored value rather than attempting to repair it through display formatting alone.
