Zoho Sheet EASTERSUNDAY Function: Year Inputs and Calendar Offsets
Build a reproducible Easter date table with explicit year limits, short-year caveats, independent calendar checks and relative-day examples.
Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked
EASTERSUNDAY returns the date of Easter Sunday for a supplied year. For example, Zoho explicitly documents =EASTERSUNDAY(2020) as April 12, 2020. The output is a calendar date to format and reuse, rather than a month number or a general list of public holidays.
Availability and verification scope
Zoho’s official EASTERSUNDAY entry was retrieved on October 15, 2026. It documents the rolling web service without establishing an introduction release or a last functioning version; both historical endpoints remain unknown. Current web documentation does not certify mobile or offline-client parity.
The calendar results here were independently calculated from the stated dates. They are reference expectations, not captured native Zoho output. Formulas follow the help’s semicolon notation; check the actual editor’s locale and syntax before pasting them.
Exact syntax and documented year ranges
EASTERSUNDAY(year)
Zoho specifies an integer year in 1583–9956, or a short integer in 0–99. The worked worksheet uses four-digit years so that its intended century is explicit.
The source demonstrates EASTERSUNDAY(21) as April 4, 2021, but does not explain a complete century-pivot rule for all short years. That single example is not enough to infer the meaning of every value from 0 through 99. Fractional years, blank inputs and values outside the documented ranges should not be treated as silently valid.
Rebuild the three published examples
| Formula | Date documented by Zoho |
|---|---|
=EASTERSUNDAY(2020) |
2020-04-12 |
=EASTERSUNDAY(21) |
2021-04-04 |
=EASTERSUNDAY(2001) |
2001-04-15 |
The different date displays used by the vendor do not imply different output types. Apply a date format before comparing calendar components. A general-number display may expose an underlying date serial; this guide does not invent a serial epoch or claim a particular native serial value.
For routine reuse prefer =EASTERSUNDAY(2021) to the shorthand 21. Keeping all four digits in the input table makes a later export or review less ambiguous.
A complete multi-year calendar table
Create EasterPlan with Year in A1 and Easter_date in B1. Enter the six years below in A2:A7, then fill B2 =EASTERSUNDAY(A2) down through B7.
| Row | A: year | Independent Gregorian Easter expectation |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2024 | 2024-03-31 |
| 3 | 2025 | 2025-04-20 |
| 4 | 2026 | 2026-04-05 |
| 5 | 2027 | 2027-03-28 |
| 6 | 2028 | 2028-04-16 |
| 7 | 2030 | 2030-04-21 |
These expectations use Gregorian ecclesiastical calculation, consistent with Zoho’s published controls. That consistency is an inference about the intended calendar, not a published Zoho guarantee covering every denomination or year. The U.S. Naval Observatory’s 2027 table independently lists March 28 for Easter that year.
Changing A5 from 2027 to 2028 makes its expected date April 16, 2028, matching the unchanged 2028 row. The dates are not generated by adding 365 or 366 days to the preceding Easter date; each year is evaluated independently.
Advanced: derive clearly labeled relative observances
For a supplied calendar convention, a date can be used as the base for fixed day offsets. The USNO observance reference places Palm Sunday seven days before Easter, Good Friday two days before it, and Ascension Day 39 days after it.
In EasterPlan put Palm_Sunday in C1, Good_Friday in D1 and Ascension in E1. Enter C2 =B2-7, D2 =B2-2 and E2 =B2+39, then fill down. Format C:E as dates.
For the 2027 row the independent expectations are 2027-03-21, 2027-03-26 and 2027-05-06. These also match USNO’s 2027 table. For 2026 the corresponding arithmetic dates are 2026-03-29, 2026-04-03 and 2026-05-14.
This creates explicitly chosen calendar offsets. It does not decide whether an organization closes on those days, which local holidays apply, or whether another tradition uses a different Easter calculation. Keep operational holiday policies in a separate reviewed table.
Advanced: distinguish a moving date from a fixed interval
The interval from Easter 2026 to Easter 2027 is 357 days, while Easter 2027 to Easter 2028 is 385 days under the stated model. These unequal gaps show why repeatedly adding a standard year length is not a replacement for evaluating the function for each year.
The USNO explanation of Easter describes an ecclesiastical calendar calculation, rather than a rule based directly on the observed astronomical full moon. Do not substitute a moon-phase date or a fixed March/April day and expect the same result every year.
Errors and troubleshooting
Zoho associates #VALUE! with values outside the specified range, alongside the shared invalid-type explanation. Its entry also lists generic name and reference errors. It does not document a detailed fractional-year coercion or short-year mapping table.
If the date appears as a large number, check formatting first. If the year is surprising, inspect whether a two-digit shorthand was entered. If a calendar disagrees, compare the calendar convention before assuming a calculation defect. The examples validate independent Gregorian dates and source controls; no native Zoho test or universal religious-calendar compatibility is claimed.
