Zoho Sheet RANDBETWEEN Function: Integer Ranges and Reproducible Checks

Mathematical Intermediate Zoho Sheet

Model integer draws with complete possible-outcome sets, dependent-cell fixtures and careful handling of recalculation and decimal scaling.

Verification status: See the evidence and test scope described in this guide. How formula examples are checked

RANDBETWEEN returns a random integer between a specified minimum and maximum. The important result contract is an integer in that range. A sample printed in a guide does not determine which valid integer the next recalculation will return.

Availability and verification

The official RANDBETWEEN reference was retrieved October 15, 2026. The checked references do not establish an introduction release, so the first functioning version remains unknown. The last functioning version is unknown: current documentation is not a last-working-build test. The web entry does not establish mobile or offline-client parity.

The worked results and constraints below were independently checked. No native Zoho session was executed. Examples follow the help’s semicolon formula notation even where its syntax heading uses commas; verify the actual editor’s accepted separators. All datasets are fictional and fully specified rather than reconstructed from hidden embedded cells.

Syntax and input scope

RANDBETWEEN(bottom; top)

Both arguments are required. bottom is the minimum and top the maximum. The worked cases use explicit integer bounds with bottom below top. Fractional-bound conversion, reversed bounds and coercion of blanks or text are not specified in the retrieved entry and are not inferred from another spreadsheet.

Zoho states that results change whenever the function recalculates. The signature has no seed input, and the source does not list every recalculation trigger. It also does not establish cryptographic suitability or an empirical guarantee of independent uniform draws.

The examples’ sets include the named minimum and maximum as possible integers under the documented range description. They do not claim that both endpoints will appear in any short sample.

Complete integer-range worksheet

Enter Minimum, Maximum and Draw in A1:C1. Put the following rows in A2:B4 and use =RANDBETWEEN(A2;B2) in C2, filled down:

Row Minimum Maximum Possible integer set
2 1 6 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
3 -2 3 -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3
4 5 10 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Each set has six members: top−bottom+1. The zero-crossing range is not missing zero, and the first range is not limited to 1 through 5.

The third row corresponds to the source’s RANDBETWEEN(5;10) illustration, which displays 9. Nine is one valid outcome, not a reproducible constant. The source’s negative-to-positive example similarly displays -1 as one possible member of its range.

Example: use one draw in several dependent columns

For a row representing a fictional package quantity, put =RANDBETWEEN(1;6) in E2. In F2 enter =2*E2, and in G2 =E2>=4.

F must be one of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. G is TRUE for draws 4, 5 and 6 and FALSE for 1, 2 and 3. Both cells refer to E2, so they describe the same draw.

Using separate RANDBETWEEN calls inside F and G would not audit E2’s outcome. Store the draw once when multiple model fields must remain consistent within an evaluation.

Deterministic test for the dependent formulas

Enter fixed integers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in I2:I7. These are an exhaustive fixture, not a captured random sample. Fill =2*I2 and =I2>=4 beside them.

The expected doubled values are 2,4,6,8,10,12 and flags FALSE,FALSE,FALSE,TRUE,TRUE,TRUE. Three of six possible inputs pass the threshold. That count does not guarantee that half of six live random draws will pass.

The fixture tests transformations and comparisons independently of the generator. Keep it available when changing bounds or downstream formulas so a random fluctuation is not mistaken for a regression.

Advanced: integer sampling followed by decimal scaling

Zoho shows =RANDBETWEEN(100;1000)/35 with one displayed value 12.142857143. That display is consistent with an illustrative underlying integer 425 divided by 35; it is not the output promised for future evaluations.

The full possible scaled range is from 100/35≈2.8571428571 through 1000/35≈28.5714285714, at increments of 1/35≈0.0285714286. There are 901 possible underlying integers. Dividing an integer draw creates a discrete grid of decimal outputs, not every real number in that interval.

For a simpler exact grid, =RANDBETWEEN(0;20)/4 can produce quarter-unit values from zero through five. The fixed controls 0, 1, 10 and 20 map to 0, 0.25, 2.5 and 5.

Advanced: duplicates and recorded scenarios

Separate draws can repeat the same integer. RANDBETWEEN is not a no-replacement sampler and does not provide a uniqueness argument. Do not assign supposedly unique record identifiers merely by taking a handful of random integers from a small range.

When a scenario must be retained, record the numeric outcomes separately and verify that those recorded cells no longer contain live random formulas. A small sample’s repeated values or uneven counts do not by themselves prove a generator fault. A formal quality assessment requires a suitable statistical procedure and much more evidence.

Errors and troubleshooting

The official error table is generic and does not provide a complete RANDBETWEEN-specific domain matrix. No exact native error is asserted for reversed bounds, fractional endpoints or invalid input types.

If a result is outside the intended set, inspect the stored bounds and copied references. If it changes unexpectedly, check recalculation. If a dependent column disagrees with the draw, check whether it calls the random function again rather than referencing the original draw cell.
