Create and Check a Chart in Zoho Sheet

Create one chart, confirm categories/series and maintain source range, labels and axes after data changes. Basic creation and formatting are consolidated.

Scope and starting state

Zoho Sheet web editor in an English desktop browser, rolling service; official documentation checked 19 October 2026. No numbered release, desktop-app or mobile parity is asserted. Live account controls, saving, printing and native screenshots have not been tested.

Use an existing account with permission to create and edit a private synthetic workbook. Record your browser/version, account role and actual storage location before starting. Do not use a production or shared file. The menu paths below come from the linked web documentation; if your interface differs, stop and consult its web help instead of substituting Windows, macOS or mobile instructions.

Start a blank workbook named Zoho-Chart-Practice in your own Zoho Sheet file list, and record its private editor URL locally so you can reopen this exact workbook. Use its first worksheet, Sheet1; if the initial tab has a different name, record that name and use it consistently in all references. All ranges below belong to that worksheet. Finish entries with Enter. Start with no open dialog, no active cell edit, and no previously generated table, chart or conditional rules. The fixture is entirely inline; no download, upload or third-party connection is needed.

Make a two-series chart of planned and completed work. Check every point before polishing the chart, then add a fourth category without accidentally retaining two overlapping source ranges.

Enter the chart data

Enter A1:C4. Keep E1:N18 blank for placing the chart and keep row 5 empty for growth.

Row A: Month B: Planned C: Completed
1 Month Planned Completed
2 January 12 10
3 February 15 16
4 March 18 14

In A7 type Totals, B7 =SUM(B2:B4), and C7 =SUM(C2:C4). Expect 45 and 40. Do not include row 7 in the chart source: a total is not another month.

Build and inspect the chart

Select A1:C4 and choose Insert → Chart. Choose a conventional two-dimensional column chart with side-by-side series, not stacked or percentage-stacked. If the offered type labels differ, identify the preview showing two separate columns per month before accepting it. Position the chart in the empty area so it does not cover the source or totals.

Right-click the chart to open its side pane. In Data, inspect the single static source range, equivalent to Sheet1.A1:C4. The month text is the category axis and the two numeric columns are the series. Confirm three groups and exactly two series named Planned and Completed; correct source/label orientation using the actual Data controls if necessary. The source guide establishes the Data tab but does not name every deployed axis-role control, so do not invent a missing button. If you cannot assign the roles, stop the native acceptance check and record the mismatch.

In Design, enable Title, X-Axis Title, Y-Axis Title, X-Axis Label, Y-Axis Label, Legend and Data Labels. Put the legend at the bottom. In Format, select Chart Title, use its Options tab and enter Work completed against plan. Select the axis-title elements in turn and set Month and Jobs. Use the Series element’s Styles options for two distinguishable series colors, retaining names and data labels so color is not the sole identifier. Do not add a trendline to three categories or a 3-D effect that makes comparison harder.

Inspect the Y-Axis element and confirm a non-misleading baseline for a column chart, preferably zero. The help names Y-Axis formatting but does not enumerate minimum/maximum controls; change a bound only if the actual pane clearly exposes it, then record that setting. Never report a zero bound merely because the chart looks approximately right. Widen the chart if labels collide.

The independent point check is January 12/10, February 15/16, March 18/14, in Planned/Completed order. February is the only month with Completed above Planned. The totals are worksheet checks, not plotted values.

Change and extend the source

Change C4 to 20. March’s Completed point must become 20 and C7 must become 46. Add A5:C5 as April, 14, 13. Update B7 to =SUM(B2:B5) and C7 to =SUM(C2:C5); expect 59 and 59.

Right-click the chart and return to Data. Edit the existing static range to Sheet1.A1:C5, using your recorded worksheet name if different. Do not press the plus icon to add a second copy of the old range: the plus control adds multiple data ranges. Confirm there is one source and four month groups, ending with April 14/13. If the live field cannot be edited, stop and document the missing control instead of claiming automatic growth. Read all eight displayed values: 12, 10, 15, 16, 18, 20, 14, 13. The final data has equal overall totals but unequal monthly performance.

Preserve the completed result and reopen it

Leave the completed exercise in Zoho-Chart-Practice in your own Zoho Sheet file list, at the private editor URL you recorded. Close any formatting pane or print dialog after applying the intended changes; leave cell edit mode. Zoho documents automatic saving and a last-modified time at the top right. Wait for the completed changes to be saved and check that time; an offline or error state is not a successful save.

Close the workbook tab, reopen the same workbook from your recorded URL or your file list, and select Sheet1 (or your recorded tab name). Confirm one chart, one source A1:C5, four categories, eight labels with the stated values, both totals 59, and readable title/axes/legend. Reopen its Data pane to verify the saved source rather than trusting appearance alone. This is a required reader acceptance check, not a claim that the author performed it. If a check fails, stop, confirm the correct workbook and connection, and repeat the relevant setup explicitly. Do not rely on Undo after reopening.

Optional reset in a separate practice workbook

Keep the verified final workbook intact. For a reset experiment, start a second blank workbook named Zoho-Chart-Reset and recreate the fixture and the feature there. Do not clear the completed original. Close any open dialogs and leave cell edit mode before resetting. Recreate the initial fixture and chart in the reset workbook. Right-click that chart and choose Delete. Confirm the original cells and totals 45/40 remain; deleting a chart should not be treated as deleting its source. Leave the completed original chart intact.

Troubleshooting

A fourth month missing from the chart is a range problem, not a reason to type a chart label manually. Duplicate legends can indicate an added duplicate range. A bar labeled 46 indicates the totals row was included. Equal totals do not imply equal monthly values. Use View → Navigation to locate the chart if it is off-screen; do not use Publish or Save as Image as part of this private exercise.

Official sources and testing status

The controls above were checked against these first-party web references on 19 October 2026. Fixture arithmetic and manuscript state transitions were checked separately. No account was opened, no workbook was uploaded, no native UI run or native screenshot was produced, and save/reopen or PDF acceptance remains a reader test. Site-render screenshots, if later produced, prove only article rendering.
