Keep Headers Visible in Zoho Sheet
Freeze headings and identifier columns in the web editor, navigate a long sheet and undo the freeze. This is distinct from personal filters and printed repetition.
Scope and starting state
Zoho Sheet web editor in an English desktop browser, rolling service; official documentation checked 19 October 2026. No numbered release, desktop-app or mobile parity is asserted. Live account controls, saving, printing and native screenshots have not been tested.
Use an existing account with permission to create and edit a private synthetic workbook. Record your browser/version, account role and actual storage location before starting. Do not use a production or shared file. The menu paths below come from the linked web documentation; if your interface differs, stop and consult its web help instead of substituting Windows, macOS or mobile instructions.
Start a blank workbook named Zoho-Freeze-Practice in your own Zoho Sheet file list, and record its private editor URL locally so you can reopen this exact workbook. Use its first worksheet, Sheet1; if the initial tab has a different name, record that name and use it consistently in all references. All ranges below belong to that worksheet. Finish entries with Enter. Start with no open dialog, no active cell edit, and no previously generated table, chart or conditional rules. The fixture is entirely inline; no download, upload or third-party connection is needed.
Keep the first row and identifier column visible while moving through a wide, tall grid. Test navigation separately from freezing, and preserve the final frozen view before any unfreeze experiment.
Construct a deterministic navigation fixture
This exercise uses ordinary cells, not a formatted table whose header might appear automatically. In A1:F1 enter ID, Task, Owner, Planned, Actual, Status.
For rows 2 through 41, enter this complete generated fixture: in each row r, A contains T followed by rโ1 as two digits (T01 through T40), B contains Review item followed by rโ1, C contains Alex, D contains rโ1, E contains twice rโ1, and F contains Open. You can enter formulas to avoid forty manual rows: A2 ="T"&TEXT(ROW()-1;"00"), B2 ="Review item "&(ROW()-1), C2 Alex, D2 =ROW()-1, E2 =2*D2, F2 Open; copy A2:F2 down through row 41. If your locale requires another function separator, adjust it consistently. Check A2 T01, A41 T40, D41 40, E41 80.
Enter H1 Planned total, H2 =SUM(D2:D41), I1 Actual total, I2 =SUM(E2:E41). Expect 820 and 1640. Leave G blank. The width of the browser may show all columns; reduce the browser window width or temporarily widen columns so horizontal scrolling actually moves A out of view. Record the layout change; do not alter browser zoom so far that labels are unreadable.
Establish an unfrozen control, then freeze
- Finish cell editing and select A1. Choose View โ Freeze โ Unfreeze to remove any prior setting. Scroll down until row 1 leaves view, then scroll horizontally until column A leaves view. This confirms you have enough off-screen content to test the feature.
- Return to A1 using the Go to cell command, Ctrl+G on Windows or Cmd+G on macOS in the browser, entering
A1. If the browser intercepts the shortcut, use the sheet’s name/reference box instead; do not assume browser Find is the sheet’s Go to command. - Choose View โ Freeze โ Row 1. Scroll down to row 30. The six headers must remain visible at the top while row 30 contains T29 and values 29/58. Return to A1.
- Choose View โ Freeze โ Column A. Scroll down and right again. Verify both row 1 and column A remain visible. The desired final view contains both frozen regions; if applying the column setting replaced the row setting in your interface, do not mark this passed. Use the documented View โ Freeze โ Selection option with a clearly identified range choice, or record the unresolved behavior before continuing.
The source also documents selecting a cell and freezing up to the selected row or column. That is useful for multiple header rows, but is not needed for this one-row/one-column outcome. Avoid selecting row 30 while setting a boundary: it can freeze a much larger region than intended.
Compare selected-boundary and selected-range modes
Before the value-change exercise, record the successful first-row/column setup, then clear it with View โ Freeze โ Unfreeze. Select C3 and choose View โ Freeze โ Up to selected row; the source describes freezing the rows before the selection, so check rows 1โ2 remain during vertical scrolling. Clear with Unfreeze, select C3 again, and test Up to selected column; check columns AโB during horizontal scrolling. Record the actual boundaries if your menu wording or behavior differs; these are reader tests, not observed results.
Clear again. Select A1:B2 and choose View โ Freeze โ Selection. The web help says to choose the desired range from this submenu but does not enumerate its choices. Record the offered choices and choose the one matching A1:B2 only if it is unambiguous; otherwise stop this comparison and record the missing control. Scroll both ways and record exactly which rows/columns remain. Do not equate an arbitrary selected rectangle with Excel’s active-cell Freeze Panes behavior without observing it. Clear this trial with Unfreeze regardless of its outcome, return to A1, and explicitly reapply Row 1 and Column A as in the earlier procedure. Confirm both boundaries again. The final workbook must not retain a trial two-row/two-column freeze.
Navigate, change and grow
With the frozen settings active, go to E35. Read row ID T34 in A35, the Actual header in E1, and value 68. Change E35 to 70. I2 should become 1642; H2 stays 820. Navigate back to A1 and verify the same frozen boundaries.
Append row 42 with literal values T41, Review item 41, Alex, 41, 82, Open. Update H2 to =SUM(D2:D42) and I2 to =SUM(E2:E42); expect 861 and 1724. Scroll until the appended row is visible. Its identifier must remain associated with its data while row 1 remains in view. Freezing should not sort, hide, lock or prevent editing the cells. Return to A1 as the final saved viewport.
Preserve the completed result and reopen it
Leave the completed exercise in Zoho-Freeze-Practice in your own Zoho Sheet file list, at the private editor URL you recorded. Close any formatting pane or print dialog after applying the intended changes; leave cell edit mode. Zoho documents automatic saving and a last-modified time at the top right. Wait for the completed changes to be saved and check that time; an offline or error state is not a successful save.
Close the workbook tab, reopen the same workbook from your recorded URL or your file list, and select Sheet1 (or your recorded tab name). Scroll vertically and horizontally again, checking both frozen boundaries, row 42 T41/41/82, E35 equal to 70, and totals 861/1724. If the freeze state did not persist, record that failure rather than implying data loss. This is a required reader acceptance check, not a claim that the author performed it. If a check fails, stop, confirm the correct workbook and connection, and repeat the relevant setup explicitly. Do not rely on Undo after reopening.
Optional reset in a separate practice workbook
Keep the verified final workbook intact. For a reset experiment, start a second blank workbook named Zoho-Freeze-Reset and recreate the fixture and the feature there. Do not clear the completed original. Close any open dialogs and leave cell edit mode before resetting. After rebuilding the grown fixture and freeze setup there, choose View โ Freeze โ Unfreeze. Scroll so row 1 and column A leave view. Totals must still be 861/1724 and E35 still 70. Unfreeze changes the view, not values. Do not use Undo to restore the original workbook after a reopen; apply the intended freeze settings explicitly if needed.
Troubleshooting
No visible movement may mean the viewport already fits all data. A header that remains without a freeze could come from a formatted table; this fixture deliberately avoids one. A huge fixed region suggests a wrong selection/boundary. A worksheet that cannot be edited is an access/protection issue, not a freeze issue. Freezing on screen does not by itself prove printed headers repeat; the print options control that separately.
Official sources and testing status
The controls above were checked against these first-party web references on 19 October 2026. Fixture arithmetic and manuscript state transitions were checked separately. No account was opened, no workbook was uploaded, no native UI run or native screenshot was produced, and save/reopen or PDF acceptance remains a reader test. Site-render screenshots, if later produced, prove only article rendering.
